I'm looking to lower my vreg temp.
Does anyone have any pictures were you have added a small fan to cool
the vreg heat sink.
If so what kind of fan did you use and how did you mount it.
I'm using the e758 board.

    And this is it mounted,

I made the bracket out of some plastic i found in my shed and its attached to the 120mm exhaust fan.

    Hi Neggers,
Looks like the fans blow air onto the VREG HS.  This configuration seems like it would blow warm air back on to the processor as the two small fans rest under the pull fan of your HS.  If so, has this raised Core temps any?  The lower Vreg temps are impressive!

Here's my setup. I've got two 50mm fans from OEM heatsinks zip-tied through the lowest inside corner to the VREG heatsink. Lowered temps under load from 90s C to 60sC.

Hey Neggers, if you're still around, I see you have the 40mm fans facing VReg from the 'west' - do you have them set to pull air through the fins or push.. I ask because I'm thinking of doing something similar, although the 120mm fan you have attached them to is an exhaust, and of course the CPU cooler is also blowing air from east to west, which would be opposite to those little fans if they are push instead of pull (but hey, if it works, great!)..

I was looking at two 40mm x 10mm fans and trying to squeeze them in on the other side, but if I can place them on the other side like you have, then that would be easier to mount them the way you have.

    Cheers.

When I first set it up I had them pulling air, so all air was moving the same direction through my case, I later turned them around so they were pushing air through the Vreg heatsink, and found that they were alot more effective that way (even though they were theoretically pushing warm air through the heatsink), it cause my Vreg to be ~4-5C cooler with them pushing to them pulling.

And it didnt matter whether I had them pushing or pulling the CPU core temps were ~1-2C cooler than no fan at all on the vreg.

@ iride4u : Thanks for the pic. I have a rather large Mega Shadow CPU cooler which limits me with the 758 vanilla board. My NorthBridge temps are fine so no biggie there - idles around 30°C - don't think I could squeeze a fan in that gap even if I wanted to anyway. It looks like there's just enough room for me to drop a couple of 40 x 10mm fans in by the VReg heatsink where you have the single 50mm - at least I'm hoping there's enough room... it's going to be tight. Ordered some 11" zip ties along with the fans to secure them.. I wonder if it'll create much vibration noise? Apparently the small fan solution works exceptionally well for some, yet others it hasn't helped at all, so it'll be an interesting experiment.

Sweet, glad you replied. I'll be going for the push then (if I can fit the buggers in there) - it seems to make more sense to me as it goes against the flow of everything else otherwise. Didn't even consider it would help CPU core temps, but I guess that makes sense considering the VReg would heat the board around it and it's very close to the CPU. If that can drop may VReg temps anything close to what it did for you (17°C under load), I'll be stoked! Cheers for replying.

edit** wait, when you said you turned them around, did you mean you placed the fans on the other side of the VReg heatsink, or did you just flip them to they were still on the 'west' side, but pushing air through the VReg heatsink towards the CPU?

Debatable - if you're running high on the VReg temp, then cooling them should theoretically help gain a more stable clock. In saying that, EVGA apparently say that the VReg is built to handle 100°C without too much concern, but to me there's the issue of heat transfer via the board itself to other components nearby - like the CPU..

To attach the fans I use a thick clear double sided tape. I put a little in the center and some on the bottom of the fan.
I get the tape from ACE Hardware it has red mylar as a protective coating.

It keeps the board from dying.

That should be your bigger concern.  If your VREG temperature is getting up in the high 70's and higher under load, you will definately want to consider this.

Actually that might serve as a kind of anti-vibration kit at the same time. Nice.

Edit* Also since putting the fans there I have also removed the thermal pad from the Vreg heatsink and replaced it with MX-3 TIM, to see if using grease instead of a pad would help the temps. Doing this also lowered the temps about another 4C, My Vreg temps are now 58-62C underload, depending on what the ambient in my room is like.

Thanks. I wonder if pushing from the east or the west would be better then? Six of one, half a dozen of the other maybe.. LOL

I have never replaced the VReg pads, but I read somewhere that the chips aren't all the same level (height) underneath, which is why thicker pads are used, because paste might not make full contact between all the vreg chips and the heatsink plate.. is that true about the differing heights?

First time I did one of my GTX 285's, I replaced the thermal pads with paste, and it wasn't too successful - not all of them made full contact because of the varying heights. I later replaced that paste and the thermal pads in my second GTX 285 SSC's with some 1mm EK pads, and that worked very well (and put MX-3 on the GPU's), so that is why I ask about the vreg chip heights.

Ya the vreg chips are pretty uneven, however I would say at max they differ by less then 0.5mm in height (well on my board atleast, I have heard on others that they can differ more or less), so on the ones that were slightly lower I put a tiny bit more TIM and it worked good for me.

I'm sure putting a better quality pad on there as well could help, but i just decided to try TIM first and it worked well for me.  vv

Also I think it works better on the Vreg than with video cards, because the video card heatsinks are designed to sit flat on the GPU but have the 1mm pad between the vrm/memory chips, so the heatsink is always going to be ~1mm too high off them, however with the Vreg heatsink on the motherboard it only sits on the vreg chips, so if you remove the 1mm pad you just screw it down abit tighter and it will actually be touching the vreg chips instead of sitting 1mm too high.

Here are several different VReg cooling setups that I have running now or had running before.

E758 (VReg 62C under load - second image)

    Micro (VReg 43C under load)

The fan blowing air from the side has actually worked out well. These are 40-50mm fans. The two blue ones in the first image are from Performance-PCs and are 40mm. The one in the middle in the first image is a 50mm Delta. The other two are Evercool fans.

@ Neggers : Ok thanks.. I still have left-over padding, so I'll just play it by ear, depending how it looks under there.

Good point re the difference between GPU pads and VReg pads too.

Cheers again - appreciate the knowledge.

@ LinuxRouter : Thanks for the pics. I have the 758 and will be going for a similar setup as the first pic there, but with just two 40x10mm Scythe Mini Kaze fans. I don't think I can fit one right in the middle of the heatsink because of the Mega Shadow mount gets in the way. I thought about putting a spot fan pointing up from below as you have in the other two pics, but I've got two GTX 285 SSC's sitting right under there and they produce quite a bit of heat even from the top of the pcb, so decided against it.
..then again, my nb doesn't overheat at all...

    Neggers

Heres how mine looks, I used 2x 40mm Scythe Mini fans

    And this is it mounted,

I made the bracket out of some plastic i found in my shed and its attached to the 120mm exhaust fan.

Hey are you using the Noctua NH-U9 SE2? how the heck did you get the top fan to fit under the vreg?i can't slide it in without bending it.

It was the NH-U12P, and yeah it was tight, but I could just squeeze the fan inbetween the vreg heatsink and the NH-U12P.

I have now swapped over to the Venomous-X though and the second fan fits on that no worries with this board.

ah damn. i was hoping you were using the U9 and had a trick to make it fit. hehe.

Does anyone know if there are 92mm fans slimmer than 25mm? I own the scythe 92/100mm super slim fan but it's actually 100mm with 92mm holes. I've looked everywhere but I hope someone has tips to getting some slim 92mm fans.

My vreg shows 90-100C at idle. Before doing anything about that I want to test a full load. Is there any risk in doing so?
