Super important to know if it's memory temp or memory junction temp. If he was only getting the regular temp and he's looking at the junction temp now then that would explain it...otherwise it seems unlikely that a BIOS update would cause a jump in VRAM temps...try setting the fan to 100% manually and test run it, if it still hits crazy temps then submit a ticket.
