I'm thinking about building a new rig (mine is older than dirt) using GTX 1080 TI FTW3 or 2. Looking at the spec comparison they are both listed as VR ready: N. I can't believe these cards are not VR ready or won't at least have an update that will make them VR ready. AM I missing something?

IMO do yourself a favor and don't buy a dell. Just build your own PC. Mostly just for the fact that you will have a motherboard, power supply, and case that will be compatible with upgrades down the line. I can't tell you how many times friends and family have asked me about upgrading their Dell only to find that for one reason or another the proprietary stuff pre builds used got in the way.

LOL - I have no intention of buying a dell. This PC was supposed to be an Alienware but they did not have the one I wanted. Dell put together the same configuration as the Alienware I was interested in. I have changed everything but the motherboard over time. The motherboard, of course, has a bastardized dell connector. This is also the first gaming desktop I did not build. My question is still unanswered though, are the 1080 TI cards VR ready and if not will they be with a software and/or firmware upgrade? Thanks

The 1080ti is for sure VR ready, just keep in mind the FE edition only has one HDMI port which VR uses. So you will need a display port to HDMI adapter if you are wanting to also use HDMI for your monitor.

Yes they are more than VR ready.

I built my PC in Feb for VR...  https://pcpartpicker.com/b/qNq48d

I built it with a 1080 and the 1080 is more than VR ready.  I only upgraded to the Ti because I could step up for $150.

IMHO 1070 is the bare minimum for VR... the 1080 is really good... and the 1080 Ti is even better.  It just boils down to what you want to spend but all 3 get the job done.  I've got 400GB of VR apps/games and every one of them is visually stunning.

Just make sure you have a good CPU.  It does make a difference.  I'd go with no less than an i7.

Yep... I run my 4k monitor off a display port and then the HDMI port on the card is linked to the front VR connections on my case (S340 Elite) and the Rift headset uses it along with a USB 3.0 port.

No prob.  Just trying to steer you in the right direction.    I've seen so many people with the absolute bare minimum hardware (according to Rift or Vive system requirements) complaining about their VR experience.

VR isn't IMHO something you can skimp on.  You don't have to have the absolute best CPU or GPU for an optimal experience but you shouldn't go with minimum hardware.  As said, I recommend at worst the 1070 and an i7.

Good luck!  Whether you're gaming in a haunted house or watching a movie on the big screen in your virtual movie theater VR when done right is an amazing experience!

LOL... then when they come out with games you consider good you'll be complaining that it's $39.99 and not $19.99...

There's lots of good games (Arizona Sunshine, Robo Recall, Lucky's Tale, Wilson's Heart to name a few) and there's some really cool apps as well (Everest VR, Google Earth VR, Affected the Manor, Paranormal Activity VR to name a few)...

So here's what I'm looking at for my new rig. Some feedback on the components is appreciated.

    Motherboard:
    Asus TUF Z270 Mark 1
    Or
    Asus ROG Strix Z270E Gaming
I like the Z270E because it has the new USB 3.1 on board and is packed with goodies.

    CPU:
Intel 7th Gen Intel Core Desktop Processor i7-7700K

    Memory:
    Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 3200 C16 for Intel 100 Series - White

    Graphics:
EVGA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 (or hybrid if there is one)

    Drives:
    Samsung 960 Pro 512GB
    Samsung 850 Evo 1TB M.2

    Cooling:
Corsair Hydro H100i v2 Liquid Cooler
    Or
Corsair Hydro Series™ H110i 280mm Extreme Performance Liquid CPU Cooler

    PSU:
    EVGA SuperNOVA 850 T2

Case: I should mention lighting is cute but doesn’t matter to me. The following are the best of the best I can find for a reasonable price. This is a difficult decision. I would like everything to be modular, good cable routing, SD drive bays and if possible support for a DVD R/W drive (I'm old school).
Cooler Master MasterCase Pro 5 (But no DVD access I can see)
Corsair Graphite Series 760T Full Tower  (favorite so far)
NZXT Phantom 820 Full Tower (No DVD access but modular and removable filters)
CM Storm Stryker - Gaming Full Tower

Your parts look good... similar to mine.  The only thing that jumped out at me is the 960 Pro drive.

Go with the Evo.  The Evo is a much better value than the Pro.  Benchmarks have the Evo either slightly behind or in some cases equal to or better than the Pro.  I have a pair of 1TB Evo drives and they both benchmark right at the Pro specifications.

For what you'd pay for that 512GB Pro ($329) you could double it to a 1TB Evo for $479.  The NVMe drives are expensive and don't really increase load times all that much.  Where I see the difference is in moving large video files.  The difference over SATA drives is very noticeable then.  The build is also much cleaner... I have no drive cables.

EVGA G2 or G3 series on the PSU... and as for the case take your pick.  I went with the S340 Elite for the tempered glass (how anyone can go with acrylic is beyond me) and the no drive bays wasn't a big deal for me... I got a BR external drive for my video ripping tasks.

All in all nice parts list... for the VR headset I have to recommend the Rift.  It's $200 cheaper than the Vive with better controllers and a nice library of games and apps.

Agree with the EVO.  Those are really good drives with great performance.

Thanks for the feedback and EVO suggestion. I see your rig has the 960's though.  The SSD 850 EVO 2.5" SATA III 1TB is $357 on Amazon. The M2 series drives are unfamiliar to me and I need to learn how they install on an ATX MB. Now to narrow down my choices.

You listed 960 Pro and 850 Evo in your parts.

I was suggesting the 960 Evo instead of the 960 Pro.  I'm running a pair of the 1TB 960 Evo m.2 NVMe drives.

M.2 is just a form factor.  NVMe > SATA in terms of performance.  Your board will need a m.2 slot... mine has 2.  Some have 3.

Here's a pic where you can see both my 960 Evo drives.

Thanks for the clarification. It's been a while since I built one of these. The board I'm looking at has 2 M.2 slots but only one is listed as SATA.

    1 x 22110 (PCIe 3.0 x4 & SATA) 1 x 2280 (PCIe 3.0 x4)
I assume the M.2 drives are designed to work in the SATA slot.

Another question for you if you don't mind. I see at least one of the cases I'm considering has 3 wire connectors for the supplied fans. As I recall, MB controlled fans from rigs I have built in the past had 4 wire connectors so the MB could control the fan speed based on cooling needs. Have things changed or am I just looking at an older design case?

    Nice rig BTW :)

PCIe 3.0 x4 is for the NVMe 960 Evo drive I'm talking about... they are 2280.  This number refers to length and width. First two digits so 22 refers to width which is pretty standard. 42, 60 and 80 refers to length of the drive. All in mm and usually slight amount of rounding.

They also make m.2 SATA drives.  Like anything else you just have to install the compatible SSD in the correct slot.  The SATA m.2 drives are considerably cheaper than the NVMe m.2 drives for obvious reasons.  I hope I'm making sense.

I'm really not sure about your 2nd question.  This is my first build in a number of years myself... and thanks.

You have made things much easier for me. The last time I built a computer the case fans connected to 4 pin headers on the MB. These headers controlled the speed of the fans depending on the cooling needed. The standard molex connector is simply a power source that runs the fan at full speed. I know I'm missing something just not sure what? I would think all newer cases regulate the case fan speed by communicating with the MB and just want to make sure I'm getting the right case.
