Hi, I have a GTX1080ti which is connected to my Acer 144Hz g-Sync monitor by Display port. (This monitor only has ONE input - display port which is fine for me.)
My question is: VR (Just bought Oculus Rift bundle sale.) needs to be connected by HDMI 1.3 or above. I have plenty of free HDMI outs on my card.

But, if I leave my monitor plugged in with display port, can I simply add an HDMI cable to the card HDMI connector. (2 outs on one GPU), - so DP to Monitor - HDMI to Oculus same card. Is this config OK?

If, so - can I leave the monitor on when using VR, or do I need to switch or some thing else?

You are supposed to have an LCD display connected while you use a VR headset. The Rift does not replace your LCD display. Not sure why you are confused by this? The Rift only works in Rift titles, not with everything. VR is not replacement for a LCD display on your desk.

TL;DR: Leave the LCD display plugged into via the DisplayPort. Plug in the Rift to the HDMI 2.0 port. The LCD display has zero effect on Rift use.

On a separate note, not a single idea what you mean by you saying you have plenty of HDMI outs on your card. The 1080ti has only 1 HDMI port, while it has 3 DisplayPort ports. Your video card can drive as many displays as you have ports out of it. You can drive 3 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI and one DVI display all at once if you wanted to.

Your good to go. The rift setup process worked well for me when I first set mine up. Applications that can be run either on an 2D display or VR will have a launch option. In VR the app will be mirrored on your LCD or possibly black running in a window, but this isn't the norm. To confuse you more there is an app out there called desktop VR or something like that. It allows you use your HMD to use windows. This doesn't replace your LCD, but if you wanted to use your HMD like your LCD for windows, this app does that.

Excellent, thanks guys. Guess I should have read some basics about it first. Seems fairly straight forward.

Kind of bought it on a whim. I hadn't been interested in 1st gen VR, but saw the bundle sale and thought why not, reasonable price now.

I use mine for racing sims/games mostly. It's the reason I really bought it. I wish other games would support VR with just plane-ole KB and mouse, but most developers seem to think the game has to be a standalone VR experience with controllers I guess. Anyway, for me largest down side to VR right now is resolution, I really like high resolution. Having said that, I'd rather play a game in VR still. The immersion factor in my driving games is just freaking bananas for me. So, with a powerful PC such as yours you can often use Super sampling to sharpen it up more. There is also an app out there for this too. This guy has a vid about it  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2empB-0abjc

@ILike Beans. Thanks for your comments.

My opinion is similar to yours at least in one aspect (which is why I haven't unboxed it yet!) That would standing. Using the new twin hand sensors is all good, and I imagine it will increase immersion too. There is only one thing that bugs me. I like to sit down. Playing a game standing would be a great experience I guess, but more of a novelty. For daily go to gaming I prefer relaxing and sitting down.

Luckily I know quite a few games are sit down, Rez VR being one of them (correct me if I m wrong.) But I also bought SuperHot VR. A guy on the oculus forums said "he couldn't imagine playing that sitting down." I guess I'll just have to set it up and find out for myself. Pointless me speculating too much. Just want to get an idea of what to expect overall I guess. I'll let you know what I think of resolution after trying. Cheers!

P.S. Thanks for the link too!!

Yah it's really hard to describe to someone what exactly they can expect. It was a little mind blowing for me the first time using the rift and never trying anything else before. Even playing Lucky's Tale trough was pretty dang cool and I don't play those types of games. I am really happy with the design and fit of the Rift by the way, but I know that will be a big variable for everyone. The mall were I live just opened a VR type experience and I noticed they were using the Vive, but I haven't the time ATM to try it out.

This is good to know. Thanks. As mentioned I kind of impulse bought the bundle as it was good value, but had mostly lost interest by the time it arrived, lol.
Your post has made me enthusiastic again. Right, next, set the darn thing up!!

Did it take you some time to get used to playing racing games in VR?
I tried Project Cars, but after spinning out in the first turn I thought I was going to puke. I keep trying to convince myself to give it another shot.

That sucks. I have heard of people powering through whatever motion sickness they get and then they get used to it. I personally am not affected, not even at lower frames, but do remember that they say 90 fps is needed to help prevent this. It can mess with your brain when flying or standing on a ledge or something sketchy like that. It can give me the same feeling or affect like in real life (fear factor), but I just don't feel nausea.
