I have the itch to upgrade my aging X58 system and it seems a lot has changed since the days of LGA1366. That said, what's the most logical upgrade path from a X58 system to whatever Intel is offering these days? I'm okay with not buying bleeding edge tech if it means I can save a few bucks to spend on other EVGA gear.

Depends, do you just game or do production work as well...z370 and x299 are the latest and either option are more than ample for gaming. If you want to save a bit, z270 is a good spot as well.

What do you have for hardware now, CPU , GPU, hard drive, PSU and so on?
What do you use your system for? What software or games mostly used? What OS?
Are you opposed to buying used hardware?
    What is your budget?
Any other information you can think of that me be of value.
A few answers will help guide you in the right direction.

8700K and X299 hands down. That's where I'm going from my X58 platform and i7 920. Even the new i3's and i5's are nice if you want to save.

Though, my way of thinking is to get something considerably quicker than average, won't put a dent in the wallet and it lasts more than just a few years.

Thanks all. I game mostly (FPS, MMO), no production work other than Microsoft products and some audio production. Will be reusing my Windows 7 Ultimate OS; it is 64-bit. Current specs are:

    EVGA X58 SLI Classified motherboard
    Intel Core-i7 950 CPU (LGA1366)
    EVGA GTX 780Ti Kingpin
12GB Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 memory
    Corsair Gold AX1200 PSU
Intel SSDs for boot and game drives

Not opposed to buying used; no budget really, just trying to determine what the upgrade path will be before deciding on parts. I do know that I will be reusing most of my gear, PSU, graphics card, SSD's etc. for the new build.

Do you mean 8700k and z370?

As for upgrading and not needing bleeding edge tech. Z270 and 7700k deals should be pretty good around now since the holidays are coming and coffee lake was just "released"

Well, since your a gamer your probably gonna be better off with Ryzen, unless you want to spend 1000 bux on just the cpu. You are in a good spot and can just buy the cpu, mobo and ram and be done upgrading pretty much, or at least piece together the rest through the year. The 7700k/8700k only have 16 pci-e lanes on chip and the rest are chipset filler which are going to be much slower. You don't get 44 pci-e lanes on chip until you get to a 7900X, the 999.99 cpu. If money is not really a issue then that may be the way you want to go.

    MOBO: EVGA x299 Dark, CPU: I9 10900X, RAM: Patriot Viper RGB 3600 32gb, SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB, M2: Samsung 970 EVO+ 1TB, PSU: CoolerMaster M2 1500, CPU HSF: EVGA 240 CLC HSF~ P/P EK Furious Vardar, G-CARD:EVGA RTX3090 FTW3 Ultra Gaming w/Hybrid kit and Noctua IPPC 3000 P/P, CASE: LIAN-LI PC-V2010B w/ Window mod, OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit, MON: Alienware AW3821DW

What resolution do you game at?

May consider x99, there are great deals going on use hexcore CPUs, one just sold for 250$ on this forum
Also maybe consider overclock you x58 if not already to 4 - 4.2 ghz and pick up a GTX1080 or 1080TI See if that works for you.
You can always move it over to a new MB if/when you buy one
Can also go Haswell and pick up another stick of memory that you have, and still be able to use it with an i7-4770K
That with a GTX1080 or 1080TI would last a long time

    https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=haswell+i7+socket+1150&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.Xhaswell+i7+4770k.TRS1&_nkw=haswell+i7+4770k&_sacat=0

Heck my x79 hexcore 4930K at 4.2ghz and GTX1080Ti play anything I throw at it very very well.
It also crunches BOINC tasks as well as my Haswell CPU. Just IMHO the newest CPUs are not all that....
I have seen used GTX980Ti selling as low as 225$,  That GPU plays anything I throw at it

I had an x58 system before my ryzen in my sig need to update one day.  I had a 1080ti on it with an x5650 and it ran most games i played at time just fine.  With my ryzen the min frame is higher so thats better with a higher top end since it is new and gen 3 pci-x slot.  can get x5660 and x5670 processors cheap on amazon now adays so might look into that save a bit of money if your board supports them

    Ryzen 5800x3d, 32gb 3200 ddr4, kraken x62, gigabyte x370 k7, aorus master 3080, Evga 850 p2, Samsung 970 evo plus 2tb, Crucial MX300 1 TB, 4x wd blue m2 ssd on a converter m2 to sata
    Oldie But Good: Cooler Master 942 HAF X, Xeon X5690, Swiftech H220X, EVGA x58 FTW3 ,24gb samsung ecc 1333 , EVGA GTX 780 ftw acx, Corsair ax850, Samsung 840 pro 256, 120gb Corsair Force, 1tb wd Black 64mb, Win 10
