Upgrade path from Z170

So I think intel only guarantees/or maybe just does out of habit, to support 2 gens to CPUs(socket wise before they make you upgrade your motherboard for latest and greatest)? I would be coming from a Z170/6700k why the Z270 was a waste to me. With coffee lake, is that considered a new socket and I would have at least one more gen or will Z390 be broken by intel for backwards compatibility and coffee lake people would have to upgrade(assuming z390 is worthwhile upgrade)? Or maybe no one knows, but figured to ask what other people planning.

    I’m waiting to see what z390 offers. Rumors are of an 8 core cpu for it. I’m skipping over z370 myself. I’m on z270 with a 7700k right now. Can’t justify spending all that money between motherboard and processor for minimal performance increase (I’m mostly a gamer). 8 core mainstream cpu does sound interesting though. But I’ll still wait for reviews before upgrading. We don’t know if 390 will have a new socket or not yet. Coffee lake uses the 1151 socket just as Kaby. I think by mid year we’ll have more info as the 390 series should be launching.

    yeah i cant justify most of my pc spending to the wife, but i try to make do :)

    i just bought the neew coffee lake 6 core im so pumped too bad it only takes 300 series boards

    the 8k series is a decent improvement from the 7k, but if you have a 7k rig, its not worth the cost. I upgraded from Ivy Bridge...it was worth it!
