Having an unusual issue with a clock speed cap where after an uncertain amount of time, the GPU clock will cap at 780 and the memory clock at 1250. This happens on and while gaming. Once it happens, the only way I can fix it without a reboot is to load the EVGA X1 app. With the app loaded, the clock speeds work fine, but if I close out the app, the problem will eventually come back. It's not a big deal to leave the app open, so that's what I do currently, but I am curious what's going on. I'm not much of a tweaker, so I haven't really played with settings on anything. Power management is set to normal in the Nvidia control panel, and I haven't adjusted anything in the EVGA X1 app other than the speed of the rainbow effect on the lights. Anyone else experience anything like this? Card: 08G-P5-3767-KL BIOS version 94.04.46.40.7F Firmware 4.01.10 Driver: 497.29

Very odd... That would usually be caused by thermal throttling or power. Will need to know operating temps, Ampere cards throttle pretty hard once they pass 70C, but the kind of speeds you are reporting would make me suspect temps that are 90C+. Are you running any other software similar to EVGA X1, such as MSI Afterburner? That could cause these issues. Temps are OK, never higher than the 60's. I think if there were thermal throttling, then loading EVGA X1 wouldn't be able to fix the clock speed issue. As long as X1 is loaded, there's no problem and I can run the card at full load for hours without any issue. So I'm suspecting the issue has something to do with drivers or potentially firmware/vBIOS. But that's just a guess. Not using Afterburner, but I run GPU-Z, which I use to monitor the clock speeds. As far as I know, it can't actively affect those clock speeds.

Are you overclocking the card? It it is unstable, the driver can reset into that locked lower-performance state which won't go back up until you reboot, just like you described.

Try completely uninstalling PX1 and only use GPUZ to monitor your clocks.

I've seen the exact same problem with my 3080ti Hybrid. locks it down to 780 / 1250. I used to reboot to fix it then discovered that if I restarted PX1 the problem would go away. I say this because I have PX1 configured to start with windows and it still happens, just have to restart PX1 to fix. I may try removing PX1 altogether, but I hate the default fan curves...

I've never had to restart X1, but there is a caveat that if I restart the PC, then after X1 loads I need to bring it into the foreground once. It seems bringing it into the foreground initializes something that allows it to properly control the clocks. Once I've done that, I can minimize it again and it continues to work fine. In any case, X1 is my current solution, not the problem. If it's removed or stopped, then the clock speed issues come back. I wonder if the problem is some small error in the vBIOS flash as the one instance I found online of someone else experiencing a similar problem was said to be solved by reflashing the vBIOS. Unfortunately this is something I've never tried and am hesitant to pursue.

I doubt very much that the vbios is the problem. Feels an awful lot like a software conflict of some sort. Are you running the Nvidia geforce game overlay or any other game overlays? I have now shut off all of that stuff and so far have not seen the problem return, but to be fair it hasn't been a whole day yet... ** Update ** Still does it. So I have now removed EVGA PX1 from my system and rebooted. So far so good, I'll update after a day or so... ** Update ** 6 or so hours of hard running and not a single glitch since removing PX1. Not looking good for team EVGA....

It appears I may have mine fixed. Here's what I did; 1: Unplug the internet 2: Uninstall all nvidia and EVGA software rebooting after each program has been uninstalled 3: Run the Nvidia cleanup tool and reboot 4: Run DDU and let it reboot (I didn't use Safe Mode, that was going to be the next step) 5: Install latest Nvidia drivers (It should show NO PREVIOUS drivers at the start of the install) 6: Plug your network back in and reboot one last time. ** Note ** I have not re-installed PX1. I am going to run like this for a week or so before adding PX1 back in to the mix. All has been working without a hitch for me for a day and a half. I have been running the GPU hard during this time and have not seen the 780mhz problem since.

Final update for this thread: Not long after the posts in this thread the card developed a hotspot that would hit 105c and throttle the card almost immediately, so I had to RMA it. The new card shows the hotspot is approximately 10degc LOWER than the memory junction temp and under continuous full load the memory only hits 84c, I am not seeing ANY of the weird 780mhz frequencies that the old card was getting (Even after re-installing all the software) so I would say if you are still seeing this odd downclocking of your video card it may well be defective.

Yeah, wouldn't doubt it. But since it works OK with PX1, it's probably not worth the trouble of an RMA.

UPDATE: I moved the 3070 to another PC, and it's working fine. I put an Asus 1660Ti in the PC in question and it has the same issue now that the 3070 had. So the problem must have something to do with said PC or software on it. I tried using MSI Afterburner to make the 1660Ti run at proper clocks, but it wouldn't. The EVGA PX1 software made the clocks run correctly (ironically, since it's an Asus card), but it couldn't control the fan curve like Afterburner. So I have to use both programs. I suppose it's a relief that there's no actual problem with the 3070. But now I'm left with a mystery with regards to the PC. Reinstalling Windows 10 is probably the best way to figure out if it's a software issue, but given all the software I'd have to reinstall, that's just too much of a PITA. So I'll live with the unknown problem for now. As long as I have PX1 running, the clocks are fine.

One thing I'm curious about is if a bad motherboard or bad pcie slot on the motherboard could cause this issue. I've had two different gpus in this board, both exhibiting the same issue, and I got video card beep codes at boot a couple times with each GPU. Seems random, most of the time it boots fine. Even when I do hear the beeps, it still boots fine. Maybe I should try replacing the board and see what happens.

UPDATE: When installing new Nvidia drivers, I found that if I select custom instead of express there's a little check box labeled "Perform a clean installation." I checked this box and ran the installation. It appears the problem is gone!

Awesome! Just posted about that in another thread. I use it everytime I update my drivers.
