Forum-Members and Readers,
to make this short: Since several years - because of economical and environmental responsibility -, I plug and unplug my electronic-devices every day. Besides of my own responsibility, it is vital for the lifetime of my hardware, that's evident.

For example, I calculated that (only) my hardware costs me plus minus 400 Euros in electricity. With unplugging, I goes down to 300. I'm getting 50 Euros or more back, every year. It's not that much, but it's something. Generally, it is not about the money, it's a mix of all, as I said, in my first passage.

+ "How much can you save by unplugging appliances? [...] The bottom line? Unplugging your appliances probably won't leave you noticeably richer, but it's a relatively easy way to save 5 to 10 percent on your electric bill. And if you can convince your friends and neighbors to eliminate phantom power, too, the cumulative effect could be truly impressive.", Source: https://money.howstuffworks.com/personal-finance/budgeting/how-much-save-unplugging-appliances.htm

Best regards,
Martin

P:S. Maybe, that should be pinned.

It would probably be easier to just flip and turn off the main beaker in the panel box for the whole house than it would be to run around at night unplugging all the appliances than plugging them back in after I wake up the next day.

Ah there you go reroute the branch circuits that would be needed at night to a sub-panel. Even better yet feed such sub-panel with renewable energy.

More people should have that. Besides, there is a house in my neighborhood, that does not have a heater-installation, but has adequat temperatures - all over the year - because of his progressive build-quality.

With how busy many of us live our lives, I am pretty sure the last thing we want to think about when we get home to our loved ones & fuzzy animals, is flipping on a breaker, or having to go around the house turning back on all the power strips & resetting the time on all clocks & anything else that holds time. I am not sure if you have ever fiddled around with a wattage meter, but they can be a lot of fun. I purchased one years ago, as I wanted to see how much electricity certain household devices used(including computers). On a surge protector with a Computer, 55" tv, Blu-Ray Player, light fixture, sound system, and some other devices, all devices powered off, it pulled like 0.4 watts. Time would be better spent going to Wal-Mart cashing in cans & bottles & buying LED bulbs for ones house. $50 I think is a semi large exaggeration, unless we are talking a large home with tons of electronic devices plugged in. While the idea principle behind unplugging everything is certainly not a bad one, Electronic devices should be plugged into surge protectors as it is, to prevent just that….. power surges.  I’ve just seen this topic come up many times over the years in different places. The problem with it is many people exaggerate & their tests are extremely inconsistent. If someone is willing to live every single day in the exact manor, using electricity in the exact way(heaters, lights, tv & PC time, ect, ect) & time for an entire billing cycle, then doing it again in the exact manor with things “unplugged” for a billing cycle, this would be a concrete test. But many compare month to month, not taking into account heaters may run more due to the cold, or AC for the heat, cooking more with oven, or spending more or less time gaming, or Hey how many times did the wife blow dry her hair & straighten it? Maybe I am wrong, but just from personal findings, the difference is simply negligible. Again though, the idea behind is “good”, however I think there is other things we could do that help our planet on a larger scale.

p.s. I’ve never had a power surge destroy any electronic device I’ve owned.

Even though this article doesn't link any sources, just states "A joint study between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several other environmental agencies around the globe put that price at a full 10% of your monthly energy bill! Let's just believe them & roll with this article.
Here is a average monthly bill list per state from 2016 - Source U.S. Energy Information Administration
    https://www.eia.gov/electricity/sales_revenue_price/pdf/table5_a.pdf

Now I am going to use my home state as example.
Oregon- in 2016 average monthly electricty bill is $96.71(I can vouch, my bill fluctuates between $75-$130 depending on time of year), let's round that to $100 just for fun. So 10% of $100, $10? and I don't have to mess around resetting my clocks every single day, Flipping power switches before I leave for work & come home. I want you to think about this
"A joint study between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and several other environmental agencies around the globe put that price at a full 10% of your monthly energy bill!"
10% of 100 is a lot less then 10% of 200. So are they saying no matter your bill, 10% is the golden standard? Don't think so. Take 2 families, put them in identical houses, identical setups, and I can guarantee both electricity bills & water bills will be vastly different. So just because one family uses more electricity this "phantom" power draw also increases? Don't think that's how it works. One shoe does not fit all. Anyway mad respect for those who do this, but here in 2018 in a world run by technology & time is always of the essence, you can never expect people to do this.

It's totally individual... And I don't judge anybody. Maybe, you wanna see my initial post as something like an advice. The same goes for water. - It's all about resources and rationality.

I always wanted to put an 8 AWG wire around my meter and see how much that saves me.  Technically current should branch through it, which would bypass the meter.  Not much of it, but enough i would think that I may save some 15-20%.

I use two kill-o-watt meter's on both the main and secondary PC.  I just like monitoring things and see how much I'm pulling from the wall on different types of loads.  Whether that be folding, benchmarking or gaming, etc.

Use this Associate Code at your checkouts or follow these instructions for Up to 10% OFF on all your EVGA purchases:

Only crazy people go around unplugging everything in their housr

I wonder if outlets can withstand the long term abuse of plugging and unplugging.

It's a good idea but I don't see people really doing it in mass since the savings would be eaten up by the cost of replacing worn out outlets it would seem.

It's supposed to be and they have it look like a normal roof from street level so you can't tell it's glass. I read about it a bit but really wanted to hear more about it first and just re-roofed so it will be a while before I need anything like it.

My girlfriend complained about being cold in my house, as I like it around the mid 60s (F)...so I moved my mining PC into the bedroom. Heated the room right up, and its making me money, so I don't have to run around unplugging everything. (To not incur the wrath of the internet, my miner consists of all my older amd gaming cards. -No new GPU's were harmed in the making of my miner.

@Hoggle I'm going to have to do more research into this and see what color options they have, unsightly mirrors or blue film on a house kind of pushes people away but if they can make it look good it will sell and the benefits to using one are obvious depending on the ROI.

@Zeros Good idea, might as well make or even out on heating your home instead of losing money.
