EVGA friends, recently I got into Ethereum, but decided it would be wrong to abandon folding, so I'm going to give it a few days a month, which for five 1060s and 2 1070s is going to be great.

However it looks like my dual core POS AMD Phenom II X2 B55 can't keep up, I'm pegged at 100% on my quad-1060 rig, Win 7, average per GPU right now is 50K PPD.

How cheap of CPU (AM3/3+) can I go to feed my GPU's?  Thanks!

-Jason

You need to have 1 core per gpu. So for 7 gpus you need 7 cpu logical cores.

No Maj, you need REAL cores per gpu.  So you need an 8 core processor.  An x4 will not do the job.  AMD FX 8120?

A Single Core or A Single Thread Per GPU
So a 4 Core 8 Thread CPU With HT Enabled in the Bios would work.

he only has 4x 1060's on that one rig. i was only saying 7 as an example... also does AMD have their version of HT on that chipset? i know next to nothing about AMD between Athlon 64 and Ryzen.

Ryzen Yes, not a clue about the Athlon 64, Need the Full Model to look it up.

a quick google search says AMD's Ryzen was the first to introduce something similar to Intel's Hyper Threading called Simultaneous Multi-Threading (SMT). so anything before Ryzen you will need physical core counts to match GPU count.

Good Lord, I haven't had an Athlon64 for at least a decade or 2. Ryzen is awesome for crunching and probably good for gpu folding. Just depends on how much the lower IPC impacts the gpu side. My 4Ghz still gets full core utilization on 1080 and 1080Ti folding.

So back to he needs an 8120 or another 8350 like the current processor in the rig in the sig.  8120 is the cheapest and lowest power at 95 watts, but they can become heaters or should I saw blow torches, really fast.

ya, he just needs a 4 core cpu that fits his existing socket.

    I don't see load issues running 3 x 1070 (or 1 x 1080 + 2 x 1070) on machines where I have downclocked the CPU side of a A10-7860k.
    I'd estimate that any 4-core FX-series AMD for socket AM3/3+ should handle 4 x 1060 easily.
I don't remember if the Phenom line existed for AM3, but if they do a 4-core from that line would also be plenty.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.
