Yes I read that earlier today. They were stealing power from the grid to power the Crypto Farm. Stealing electricity instead of illegal drugs. That is funny.

Anyone found guilty of energy theft will be convicted under Section 13 of the Theft Act and can be sentenced to a maximum of five years imprisonment and a fine of £2,000 (or roughly $3000 USD). Apparently, the UK loses nearly $620 million USD a year to energy theft (both electricity and gas)

Yep. According to a study from UK Power (a power distributor / company) there's an annual estimated 25,000 cases of electricity theft, coupled with around 3,300 instances of gas theft. Other companies came up with similar numbers.

All together, the total cost is around £440 million worth of energy stolen every year, with some data suggesting that it can go as high as to £600 million a year

Apparently, Energy Theft is super common not just in the UK, but Europe as a whole (probably because of their Old-World Infrustructure not really being built around the concept of electricity compared to the States / Canada). 

Plus, with how crypto mining is offsetted by the electric bill, it's no wonder some miners have decided to steal energy from someone else... that way they maximize their profits

On one hand I find it hilarious that growing marijuana and mining Ethereum have similar heat signatures/power requirements.
On the other hand I question if this concept is more wide-spread. On the surface it seems like an obvious way to dramatically increase margin... but risk seems relatively high. Not just because of jail or fines, but we are in the middle of a chip shortage where those cards are borderline impossible to replace.
Then again, for those heavily engaged in the crypo-mining business... I suppose greed is a powerful motiving factor.
