About to receive my third 3090 FTW3 from EVGA via RMA. What is going on? I am very skeptical now given this post. Sorry for your issues OP. I wish you luck

Same! Receiving third card soon as well. I wish I could just return but bought from a different retailer.

That begs the question..  If I "setup" from a 3090 XC Ultra to a 3090 FTW Ultra, would they give me a brand new FTW and a recertified dud?

I think step-ups are new, not recertified.  I mean, they charge you the tax value of a new one, right?  So, it should be new.

It could still be a dud.  With all of these FTW3 duds, I personally would not step-up to that card, if I were in your shoes.

I personally would not step up and stay away from EVGA 3000 series. I went with them for my first GPU and now I’m pretty sure I won’t go with them again. ASUS seems like a better bet or even FE.

What is the update on this? Did you finally get a card without these issues?

BTW, to all those people on here that are so quick to blame other's systems, why is it that there are almost daily threads on here and the EVGA subreddit about the red light/black screen issues? I had TWO new EVGA cards that I had to RMA - one from China and one from Taiwain - assuming 2012 and 2014 serials respectively.

I actually managed to pickup a 3080FE in the UK drop last week - no black screen/fan issues on the same drivers and hardware. Also the friend's 3090 that I borrowed (MSI Ventus) also didn't have any issues with the PCIE power blowing up in a fireworks display, nor did it have the black screen issues.

EVGA need to address this issue, it would go a long way if they could just accept that they've really dropped the ball this release and make steps toward fixing these problems.

Just an update.  EVGA refunded me for the extended warranty and advanced RMAs I purchased.  EVGA received my 3090 FTW3 Ultra on the 12th, according to UPS, and I haven't received a refund for the card yet.

I just checked my credit card online and 12 business days since UPS dropped of my 3090 FTW3 Ultra at EVGA yet still no refund received.  When I called before, I was told that a manager has to manually enter the refund.  I don't know why it takes 12 business days for someone to refund a defective 3090 FTW3 Ultra after they receive it.  I was told it shouldn't take longer than 7 to 10 business days.  I guess I'll have to call EVGA tonight or tomorrow.

Looks like someone at EVGA read the forum and processed my refund.  That saved me having to call later this morning.

EVGA did finally come through and do the right thing.  It took longer than expected, but it was great customer service in the end.

Re: Three defective EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards so far. How do I get one that works? 2021/01/29 04:34:20 (permalink)
I would like to say that as I follow the recurring issues with 3080/3090, the problems seem to be of two major kinds:
1. Black screens with fans revving high and having to hard reboot the pc.
2. Red light of death

The black screens with fans revving eventually lead to red light of death. It’s 100% hardware problem that has yet to be pointed why it happens. From my personal experience it starts out of the box meaning the fans have problems (in my case started with 3rd fan not starting, then terrible noise over 3500rpm at low temperatures etc).

The red light of death could be attributed to a lower than specified PSU or a marginally proper PSU or to daisy chaining or to again other hardware problems that have yet to be pointed out.

Measures that could help:
1. Get brand new and proper PSU 850W+ for 380 and perhaps 1000+ for 3090.
2. AVOID daisy chain if you can.
3. SAVE custom sleeve cables for later
4. Use appropriate custom sleeve cables
5. Do not update drivers if you are stable
6. Don’t flash bios etc if you are not 100% sure what you are doing
7. Do monitor the stability of your GPU with 3dmark etc
8. Do use HWinfo and GPUz to log the performance of your GPU and to pinpoint any suspicious events
9. Don’t clog your pc with third party software.
10. Set PX1 once and have it keep settings and leave it be.
11. Do use MSI AB to undervolt/overclock
12. Don’t bother with disable gsync/hardware acceleration etc the GPU should work out of the box. If it doesn’t the problems will not vanish they will persist and make your life harder.
13. Do remember that RMA in first 30 days nets you a new card and past 30 you may get refurbished instead.
14. Trust the EVGA support they are indeed GREAT.

About to get my 3rd 3090.  My 2nd card died 2 nights ago playing League.

Wish EVGA would tell us what's going on.  Machine learning is my job and I keep missing a week and a half of work every time my video card goes out.

Really don't want to have to buy a quadro.

It has absolutely *NOTHING* to do with the PSU.
Please read the other threads before posting something unhelpful.
Yet another person yesterday had a card die while playing *Halo* MCC.  Not exactly a high load game.
Then Final Fantasy XIV, and then League of Legends before that.
You really need to not make people throw money away on things like that.  We aren't all rich here.

I'm 100% sure in my case it had absolutely nothing to do with the PSU or the PSU cables or any software on my system.  How do I know?  I bought a MSI RTX 3090 Gaming X Trio and flashed the MSI Suprim 450 watt BISO on it.  I was unable to replicate the black screen and 100% fans situation witht he stock BIOS or the Supreme 450 watt BIOS.  Then I tried both the EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra 500W XOC BIOS and the EVGA Kingpin 520 watt BIOS on the card.  I was unable to replicate the black screen and 100% fans issue.

In addition to that, I'm building a PC for a friend.  He paid me for the parts and I'm assembling it for him.  Not all of his parts arrived yet, but hsi RTX 3090 Strix did.  When I put that Asus 3090 Strix card in my PC, I was unable to replicate the black screen and 100% fans situation.  Then I installed the EKWB water block on the 3090 Strix and flashed the EVGA Kingpin BIOS.  Even at max power, I was unable to replicate the black screen and 100% fans situation.  Then I tried an "unlocked" BIOS on the Strix and even when the card was pulling 600+ watts itself and the CPU(with raised power limits) was running Prime 95 at the same time, I was unable to replicate the black screen and 100% fans situation.  I had the CPU pulling 270+ watts and the 3090 Strix pulling 600+ watts yet I had absolutely no issues.

Obviously the issue isn't related to my power supply or cables.  The only time my system had issues was with the EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards in it.

EVGA claims that only a small percentage of 3090 FTW3 Ultra owners have issues.  That could be true.  All I know is the two of the EVGA cards I had were the only 3090 cards in my system that had the black screen and fans at 100% speed issue.  The 3090s from other manufacturers didn't even when using the EVGA BIOS.

I'm not saying you should or shouldn't buy EVGA.  Their customer service is still amazing if you do have problems.  Its one reason I kept buying EVGA.  Asus customer service takes 2+ weeks to get a replacement for a defective product you RMA in my previous experience.  Gigabyte fails to send you a working RMA product nearly 100% of the time on the first try in my experience with 5 different Gigabyte products.  In addition to that Gigabyte ahs physically damaged products I've sent in for RMA repair/replacement.

I even bought a EVGA RTX 3070 recently because a relative of mine wanted a 3070 and couldn't find one.  So when one became available to me, I told him and he sent me the money for it.  I had no hesitation to recommend an EVGA 3070 to a family member.

Re: Three defective EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards so far. How do I get one that works? 2021/04/01 14:49:03 (permalink)
My first card suffered from the 'black screen and fans issue' which lead to its eventual 'red light of death'. The game that killed the GPU was GTA 5.

That happened 2 weeks ago and now have received my new RMA card 5 hours ago. Everything is fully updated: VBIOS, X1, RE-BAR, NVIDIA Drivers. I decided to test the game with Injustice 2, the RMA GPU worked perfectly fine for the hour I played. I then decided to try GTA 5 again, I loaded into GTA Online, and didn't last more than 10 min before 'black screen/fans 100%', the only way to get out of it was a hard reset. I have called support and have an Advanced RMA on the way (the RGB LEDs also didn't work out the box, spent 3 hours troubleshooting.)

While the broken LEDs are an issue and could be a sign of an already faulty card, (does EVGA not test their RMA cards before sending them?) the fact that the same issue that killed my first 3090, also occurred to the next 3090 in the SAME GAME, tends to lend credence to a common hardware issue.

Just like OP, this is my 3rd card now! This is extremely ridiculous for such a powerful and expensive card! There is without a doubt a defect in the 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards. I've read all the forum posts, troubleshooting, and tests. There is seriously something affecting these cards. EVGA needs to get this taken care of ASAP.

Can you double check the amount of power each card pulling from PCIe?
I have one with more than 7x W power pulling from PCIe even undervolted. And it crashes several time already, PSU: 1600W G2, 3 separated power and I can confirm this should not be PSU related if you have good one ( gold, platinum ) > 750W. I had 850W gold before, and it still had the same problem.

I don't think my data would be relevant. I have an FE 3090 and all of the power draw from the PCI-e connectors and the pci-e slot is normal. Pci-e slot is around 75 watts and each 8 pin connector is a little around 150-165 depending on the load.

If you're flashing EVGA bios onto non EVGA cards so casually it makes me question everything you do.

Re: Three defective EVGA RTX 3090 FTW3 Ultra cards so far. How do I get one that works? 2021/04/29 09:37:18 (permalink)
From reading all these posts where people have received multiple cards that didn't work, it suggests that maybe the quality of cards used for warranty replacement is subpar. I suspect that when you send a card back, you're not getting a new card fresh off the line, but one that has some sort of history. This would explain why people who have bad luck with the cards keep having bad luck with replacements.

I think that issues will be on all new RTX cards. High pressure on production = quality problems.

I guess you are the kind of person that doesn't understand how simple and easy it is to flash another BIOS onto a video card and how low risk it to flash another BIOS on a card when the card has a BIOS switch and multiple BIOS versions available through a BIOS switch.  Just because something I do is above your skill set doesn't mean its "casual" or careless.  I never said I did it "casually or carelessly" so stop putting word sin my mouth in your failure of an attempt to try to make me look bad.  I wasn't the first or last person to do this BIOS flashw ith EVGA 3090 BIOS versions on non EVGA cards.  It was done by many people before me successfully.  Maybe you need to read a few BIOS flashing guides to understand the procedure?

Nope, all the other 3090's I've had worked flawlessly.  It was just an EVGA 3090 FTW3 issue that many other users here also had with multiple cards.
