I have an Enermax Galaxy 1000w (EGA1000EWL) Active PFC, and the behemoth is almost 14 years old.   I have measured each rail directly on a connector with my 3770k almost 100% and a 3080 hovering around 80-90% usage.  My readings:

12v: 12.20v
5v: 5.08v
3.3v: 3.36v

The amp ratings are:
+3.3V@30A
+5V@30A
200W with the above
+12v@75A at 900W
+5V@6A at30W
But it shows the 12v rails broken up as:
+12V1@17A
+12V2@17A
+12V3@17A
+12V4@17A
+12V5@17A
-12V@0.6A 30W

If I compared it to a Supernova 1000 T2:
+3.3V@20A
+5V@20A
100W with the above
+12v@83.3A at 999.6W
+5VSB@2.5A
-12V@0.5A 6W

I haven't seen specific power requirements for a Z690 board.  This is only my gaming PC, and I sometimes go days/weeks without using it.  So I'm sure the usage time on it is pretty low.  I don't know anything about if it supplies "dirty" power with it's age. I'm planing on jumping on a 12900k to mate with my 3080 with an unknown number of M.2 drives and one mechanical, a waterpump and a bunch of fans like everyone else.  So...

Should I get a new PSU?

I would just because your current psu is so old.

Right?   I can't even imagine all the weird irregularities we would see if I plugged it in to some pro electrical equipment.

I would keep your Enermax as an emergency backup and use a more up to date PSU.

How that’s 3770K holding up? I still have mine, but I don’t think I’ve used it since 2015.

It REALLY depends all on the game.  I game at almost 1440.  Cyberpunk was the last straw in knowing I need to upgrade with it pushing the 3080 over 90% and the CPU at almost 100%, and I can get 40-80fps depending on location.  Control uses the 3770k around 40-50% but pushes the GPU over 90%.  Death stranding kills the 3770k at almost 100% while using less than 50% of the GPU.  Most games I can comfortably do 50-80 fps.  I try to overclock the snot out of the cpu before upgrading.   I jumped from DDR to DDR3, and now I'll be jumping to DDR5.  We been reading about Alder Lake, DDr5, and PCI5 for about a year or so?   It's been a long time coming.

Yeah, I agree that it’s been a long time coming for you. Unfortunately, it may be longer yet if DDR5 supply doesn’t go up. It’s been sold out through just about every US retailer. I’m hoping it doesn’t turn into the next GPU crisis. Otherwise, my 12900K and Z690 will continue making for rather expensive paperweights.

Back to the 3770K, what motherboard are you using with it? I’ve periodically thought about breaking mine out to see how it’d fair with modern games. Not sure how well I’d be able to overclock it, though, since I have an Intel Z77 board from back when Intel still made them. It definitely doesn’t have the most robust BIOS/UEFI. Heck, I couldn’t even disable the C1E power state. Still, I think it’d be a fun experiment tinkering with it. I did just that with a GTX 980 not that long ago, and it did surprisingly well.

It's the right choice I feel to upgrade when you are talking about 14 years for a PSU. A good one can last a long time but at that age it's lived a full life.

Correct. After an amount of time the components slowly begin to degrade. Failure may not be imminent, but eventually it will happen.

EVGA's Z68 FTW, of course.    I've used it with single and SLI GPUs.  The board has been great.

I am still using my 3770K with an Asus Maximus V Extreme and they are still doing great. I also have an EVGA 2080 Super video card and it all plays Battlefield V very well. But it is time to upgrade so I am waiting on a Z690.

What are you looking for in a Z690 system? Basic comparisons show that even a 12600K outperforms a 9900K, which the latter is what I have now. Just imagine going from a 3770K to even a 12600K. I opted for the 12900K and, to be honest, I think this new CPU will last me far longer than any CPU I've had previously. Well, it will last so long as I can get some friggin DDR5. Really hoping I don't need to buy a Z690 DDR4 board to tie me over. Speaking of something to tie anyone over, that 2080 Super should still last a while for you, and a new CPU will likely aid with that.

I want a 12900K to go with the board. Everything would be the newest out this time with the exception of my video card. Mainly a gaming machine but for every day use too. I think it will last a long time too like my current system has. Sorry I edited the quotes wrong.

I got lucky and ordered a 12900KF a few minutes ago from the egg. I’m gonna see how lucky I get with SSDs and other parts that I put on my xmas list 😇. Because at this rate, I’m sure I’ll be waiting a while for a Classified anyways 🤣.

Oh, nice! SSDs aren’t in short supply, thankfully. EVGA motherboards, however, are kind of niche, so those may or may not sell out quickly. It’s still DDR5 RAM that’s going to be hard to come by for a while I think. I backordered some the first weekend after Alder Lake’s launch with no ETA. Best Buy had “coming soon” listed for two different kits of Adata XPG DDR5 with a release date it tomorrow, the 18th, but they removed those listings for whatever reason. Maybe it’s because they anticipated them being inbound but found out that wasn’t the case. Regardless, you may want to consider an inexpensive DDR4 motherboard — or rather a less expensive one since they still cost a pretty penny — to tie you over until DDR5 takes over DDR4’s spot as the standard. That’s what I did. Now, I’m debating returning my DDR5 board or holding onto it until I can get some new RAM.

I'm not sure if I would consider DDR4, though.   I really don't want to have to spend the time tearing everything apart.  Not that I don't want to, but I've recently gone back to university, and time is a precious commodity right now .  And believe me, I love this hobby lol.  Currently, the cheapest DDR4 1700 motherboard on Newegg is an MSI.  I might consider it, but give me the opportunity to not think about that lane for the moment.  Lets all turn our DDR5 and EVGA relics towards the PC gods and hope for the best!

I would keep your Enermax as an emergency backup and use a more up to date PSU.

Lol yep! My future proofing finally came to an end. Now that I think about it, maybe I should have gotten a 2000w PSU. 🤣

Re: Thoughts on required PSU? 2022/04/20 22:21:01 (permalink)
So I'd like to point out something interesting.

I had my Supernova 1200w powering up a 1700 MSI board.  Classy came in.  I didn't feel like uncabling the Supernova out of the case to bench start up the Classy.  So I went back to the Galaxy 1000w.  With just ram, my 12900kf, and an old video card, the Classy would turn on then shut down.  I felt really bummed.  Could it really be the Galaxy 1000w?

I took all the cables from the Supernova and had them hanging out the side of the case, got it all connected to the Classy, and it fired up into bios!  I was so worried I got a bad board.

I wanted to come back and tell everyone how right you were. Even with all good voltages, the Galaxy just couldn't get the Classy running even though it works fine with the 3770k and the Z68 FTW, and it makes me wonder why.
