It's the only 3000 series card that supports SLI

The RTX 20 series carts like 2080 Ti are still working fine with SLI. One way to check is open MSI afterburner then turn on Overlay. If you see the GPU usage being about even on both then SLI is working.

This is exactly what happened to me. I emailed customer support and they basically told me to suck eggs.

I suspect the SLI decommissioning is related to the difficulty and programming complexity of trying to compute Ray Traces across multiple GPU's without the ability to use shared memory. 
 
Frankly to the best of my knowledge, there is no easy way to calculate a ray across multiple GPU's or to allocate in real time each ray trace to an individual GPU.  SLI is really targeted at raster operations where a frame can be easily split by scan line (for example).  Applications like data science, AI deep learning ... etc.  can use parallelism to take advantage of multiple GPU's.  Since these are tasks that the 3090 is designed for, it makes sense to provide the capability. 
 
So in short, SLI makes sense for the 3090 use case, but not GPU's principally targeted at gaming like the 3080.

Good point, I was only thinking about standard gaming setups, and I forgot about AI and super-computing configurations.

Looks like the two users who have 3090 sli working on 3dmark didn't run any firestrike ultra tests as the profiles are being ignored for dx11 apps.

Yeah, I'm aware. The problem with SLI of these cards is that you'll need 1000W (maybe 1300W) PSU, and that doesn't even consider cooling, which a card drawing 300-400W will need!
 
We can beef up the PSU and use hybrid/water-cooling cards, but then you're talking a 240mm rad for each GPU and a 240mm rad for the CPU, and I just don't see how people are gonna fit that unless they move to something more like an open-air test-bench.

I remember something like this when 3 and 4 way SLI was dropped to be only applied to benchmarks, even with games that had 3 way SLI profiles for the previous gen GPUs, it just wasn't allowed with the new generation of cards, regardless of if it would work or not.

this is truly shocking. I thought it would be 'backwards compatible' so to speak with older games so that we can play in native 8k at pretty good framerates. why on earth would they gimp the cards like this?
 
they have truly killed off SLI for all intents and purposes.

I hated my SLI build a long time ago.
And that was when a lot of games actually supported it.
I was so happy to get back to a single card.
What kind of a gaming rig are you building that you would even need 2 RTX-3090's linked up?

I had heard that Nvidia was going to be refocusing on SLI with the 3000 series, but it looks like that isn't going to be the case.
 
But damn, $3k+ for two graphics cards.

This biggest problem is there is no way to override this behavior. Profiles allowed us to hack solutions together. Now, you must rely on the developer (read this as EXTREMELY UNLIKELY)




Since now it comes down to support for a DX12 feature it really comes down to how hard it is to make SLI work with new games. In theory DX12 should make it easier for a developer to support then the NVIDIA SLI was and should be more like supporting a multi core processor. That said it would still take time for a developer to support it but really it could just be the way a game engine is wrote to have it just work with a single GPU or multiple. Of course we haven't really seen games make use of this feature yet and DX12 has been around for a few years.

I mean, single card solutions will make it easier for optimization, but not having the option sucks for some people who would rather go overkill on their builds.

This. Since SLI profiles have been removed, will there be a way to enable the NVlink connection for benchmarks?



I don't have a 3000 series to test on, but you should still be able to manually enable it at the command line using the nvidia-smi command like 
nvidia-smi nvlink -sc 0bz

Places like CERN and IBM, will wait for Tesla/Quadro cards.

I really thought long and hard about not going 3090 SLI , But then I decided at my age (and since I'm Not getting any younger) to just Do It!

Cant really lose but the cost of that sli adapter (where they call it now). Be pretty dang easy to resell that card.. though with all that crap going on I'd try bin on ebay or just sell to a friend.
