Got my watercooled box up and found our first casualty of the move in two 4TB hard drives.  Fortunately they were the backup copy drives of our media setup. Unfortunately, I don't have the ability to replace them at this point.  I'd LOVE to upgrade them, but the 8TB externals I've been ripping apart to fill the boxes are $150 a unit and we just can't swing it right now.

I'm fairly certain they were aging out and the heat they were stored in likely pushed them over the edge of that cliff for the last time.

All told, so far, tho, that's not a HORRID loss, just frustrating.

I hate it when a drive takes a dump. At least you were able to deal with it somewhat easily.

I have a job offer on my plate. Hours after my first interview in the area. And the pay offer is freaking GOOD. I'm baffled, but we all go through a bit of that 'imposter syndrome' from time to time.

I'm sleeping on it and will be giving my answer tomorrow, roughly 18 hours from now.

On TOP of the bewilderment, my body decided it was also a great time to crash and be sick pretty much as soon as I got home from the interview, so it's been a wild trip all told. *laughs*

But, yeah, guys, it's looking much better from the Pimp-lair than it did a few hours ago!

Congrats, offers are always nice to get --

Just have to think about your fit & future -- evaluate the competitiveness of the pay & benefits.

If data supports asking for 3% to 5% more (most offers have wiggle room) - or- even offering to buy some vacation time back.

I would like 3 weeks vacation and would expect my salary to reflect one less week worked - type of thing - some Corp offices are not flexible on that

So your worn out & under the weather -- chicken soup - rest

hope you fell better soon

Re: The Pimp's going mobile! 2018/09/01 10:30:01 (permalink)
I also got a good laugh out of that. That is indeed great.

I've just ran my monthly cleanup routine (compressing the hourly stats down for storage) for August and realized that it's my first full month of stats, with some minor down time, that I've harvested in Florida. That feels both strange and great.

Updates on the job side - I accepted the offer as it was extended. First four months are contract with rollover to perm hire, so long as all parties agree that it's a good match.  This means that I'm not quite sure what the time off offer will end up being, but you better believe I'm going to be negotiating for a good amount when they make the full time offer.

I've also been adding more recruiters/headhunters to my personal network, just in case. I believe firmly in stacking the deck in my favor.

So, I'm going to spend the week doing clean up work (finishing the unpacking as much as I can - Still need to get more shelving for books and toy displays) and prepping for the start of the new job.

Re: The Pimp's going mobile! 2018/09/06 16:45:13 (permalink)
And all at once, all that mental forward momentum get's reset.

Get a call this morning from the recruiter at Robert Half Technologies. Dude does NOT sound good in the voice message, so the dread sets in. I call back and leave a VM of my own because, of course, he's dealing with something.

He calls back. Yeah, it's a mixed bag - Bad is that the company I was placed with decided to breach trust and contract with RHT and myself and went with a former employee who saw the job listing online and contacted the owner directly.  Hey, I get it, the owner makes the call. She chose a known entity over the unknown.

And also burned a major bridge with one of the largest recruiting firms in the US.

By the end of the phone call, the recruiter was essentially sputtering every time the name of the company and their owner were mentioned.

The good is that he and his cohort who had gotten me the job are pushing my resume out to as many of their coworkers who have contacts that fit my experience as they can. Everyone agrees that I got screwed and badly and they very much badly want to make this up to me and ensure I don't have a mad-on for RHT.

However, that means I'm back on hold for employment while I go back to throwing my resume at anything that moves again.

I DO have a bit more in the way for networking than I did before, now, tho, thanks to the in between weeks of being able to slow down and actually TALK to some people instead of simply begging for work, and the first two I reached back out two moved my resume up on their piles in response.  I'm hungry for work and eager to get their names a good check mark as a result.  Win/Win there, assuming the hiring people agree.

So, yeah, mentally and emotionally burned and just . . . yeah. Tomorrow, I dig fully back into it again. Tonight, I curl up and listen to some tunes and nurse a bruised everything.

Keep on keeping on, folks. Pimpin', as it has been said, ain't easy, and I for sure am NOT going to lay down and take it without a fight.

Re: The Pimp's going mobile! 2018/09/13 08:21:39 (permalink)
**Mortal Kombat Announcer Voice** Round TWO! FIGHT!!
Another first contact interview under my belt and great feedback from the first interviewer. Their only concern before passing my resume on to the hiring manager was the travel distance, but he has a mental map that grossly overstates the distance compared to what it actually is. For some reason, he thinks it's double what it really is.  I lived in Maine. Middle of Nowhere's-ville. If you needed a GOOD job, you either moved or traveled.

So, I'm prepping for the potential of a 45 minute to hour drive each way, which isn't the WORST I've done for a good paying job.

Added bonus, if I get this one, I'll spend a week every quarter or so in Puerto Rico, and then a week or so a year in Atlanta, so there's that as well!

Cross your fingers, folks! The Pimp may be going over seas! (Briefly, and still remaining in US territories!)

I know, right? At my last job, we had small remote offices that were up to 3 or 4 hours away, depending on weather and traffic, that we could end up driving out to depending on what happened that day. A 45 minute commute is not high on my overall list of 'bothers' for a new, good paying job.  I'll just throw a few audio books and extra podcasts on the phone and fill the time educating myself.

Re: The Pimp's going mobile! 2018/09/25 14:07:06 (permalink)
Even more finger crossing, folks! Several weeks ago, I was pitched a position at a company that is looking for desktop support with focus on customer side of things, but there's a BIG sticking point with the hiring manager - The support person who is going to be boots on the ground must ALSO be an expert in SCCM and do all kinds of stuff in SCCM at the same time.  SCCM tends to be a time hog, especially if you are taking over the implementation that was done by someone else. It's also a finicky bugger, based on my research, and if you don't set it up 100% golden the first time (Spoiler alert - Almost NO ONE EVER DOES!), you will spend hours a day popping back in to ensure the alerts you are getting aren't actual alerts, because you don't DARE not verify.

The people who generally run an SCCM setup are single focus engineers getting the appropriate expert pay.

I found all this information out in the initial 10 minute conversation with the recruiter because I like to google what I'm being asked that I can learn just to make sure that it's a true 'Yeah, I can hit the ground running.' situation.  In this case? I need basic guidance and training and I'm off to the races, because that's the kind of tech I am. Give me a bit of guidance and show me how YOU want things run, and I'll be able to take that and run off into the Internet Wilderness to find the rest of my information on my own!

BUT, the hiring manager? He wants NOTHING of this. "No, I can't/won't train. I REFUSE."

So, the recruiter and I agree to table this for now, and I jokingly say "If the guy realizes what kind of fool he's being, let me know."

Fast forward and my phone rings yesterday.  The hiring manager is being enough of a twit about things that the recruiter has decided that he's going to wear his butt down and tell him flat out how stupid he's being.  The person they're trying to replace was an SCCM specialist who is NOT a customer facing tech. Has no idea how to do the boots on the ground customer work. And because this is a mixed position, that just wasn't a good fit. He thinks that he will be able to sell my extensive boots on the ground tech support/fixer work with the promise that I'll be able to pick up the SCCM side as I go, because I freaking well can, or I wouldn't be as good a support/fixer person as I am.

We had a good chat, got a few laughs over the stubborn dude and figured that I can get them to start me off at a GREAT for me pay range and just work my way upwards as I show my commitment to actually keep learning the toolkit.  Especially because I have the last 5 years of working for a company that loved to give wonderful examples of how NOT to run an enterprise. *laughs*

I'm hopefull the recruiter will have good news for me tomorrow.  If not, I also have 3 other irons currently in the fire (I've lost a few other opportunities because they went with internal hires vs the outside because it was most likely they were required to list to the outside by contracts) that could use good vibes, wood knocking, fingers crossing and any prayers if they are your thing.  This Pimp needs to get PAID!
