Hey gang,
Going to start stress testing my new i9 9900k a little , mainly to check on core temps.
I am using Prime 95, is Blend the best test - or small FFT's?
Curious which you guys might be using?

Don

I used Prime95 Blend without AVX. Gets the job done.

Ran the Intel stress test for 5 minutes, cores barely broke 60c,, mostly in the low to mid 50's so sounds like my cooling is probably ok.
Will do more in depth testing later, just wanted to check my core temps at a decent load and make sure they were looking ok.

Goodness, there are several benchmark options listed in AIDA64 Extreme - which do you run?
Also another question - when monitoring CPU temps, what is Package Temp referring to?

If you use the "System Stability" test you can select which tests you want.  There are 6 tests to choose from.  Select all or any of them you want to stress test...

I Start with High and end with Maximum changing the number of runs.
    l so I start with High (10) at 2048 then Very High (10) 4096 then Custom (6) 8192 then Maximum (4)
    Times to run ()
Keep an eye on your CPU Temps.

Rog realbench with as much memory as u have, used. P95 is too hot. Xtu is too cool unless you run the benchmark. The benchmark is accurate representation of temps, stress test is way low temp. Its descent stress test tho. Rog realbench could run for hours for me without getting dumb high, small fft p95 gets into the 90s and everything else maxes out at 85ish.

So what i mean is at 5.1ghz
    Xtu is like 65 max
    P95 is 96max
    Realbench is 86c max

Realbench is more aligned with what you would run into.
Then i run geekbench3 (modded to run 64bit for free)(hangs before i get to raytracing test if its not quite stable)
Or cinebench r15. Usually whatever passes cinebench or geek3 is stable for quite a while.

R15 has been hardest for me.

Well I ran the CPU stress test for 10 min, hottest it got was 65c.
However I forgot to go in and set my case fans higher, they were running at 50%.
Not sure where you are getting those number from ( 2048 4096 and then custom)?

Ok so IntelBurnTest - set to High and run 10 times, checked out fine.
Temps for the most part were in the mid 60's, topping out around 70.
So what is the CPU temp that folks with these i9 processors try to not go over?

Needs an update to fully support RS5 or 1809 that is.
But also needs an update to support the new Intel CPUs.
Not saying it will not work.

I see a lot water-cooler science in this thread and wanted to clarify some things.

The way SMT works in windows will actually cause you to feel like you have better stability and temps than you actually do. Also if you want to test memory while you test your OC, that's fine but typically its better to do them separately, especially if overclocking memory. If you're running memory at stock clocks, don't waste your time testing it. VCCIA/VCCIO max 1.2V for anything under 3200MHz memory. (be careful because EVGA boards will over-volt these if you use XMP)

If you want the heaviest load in AIDA, check only *one* box. Select only FPU for the hottest load on the CPU. If you select stress FPU+CPU you will see a decrease in temperatures. Try it.

That might sound counter-intuitive because it seems like you're asking more of the CPU, but in reality you're asking less of each thread due to the way windows handles SMT and process swapping.

Really, all you need is Prime95 and settings as follows:
    • Always use custom and FFT (fast Fourier transform (this is just a discrete mathematical process to do a normal FT)) "in-place". This ensures the work remains in your prescribed buffer.
    • To test your cooling system (maximum heat output): custom FFT In-place min/max 8KB
    • To test your OC stability/voltage: custom FFT In-place min/max 1344KB
    • 10-15 min run time is typically enough to saturate a water-loop, you dont need to do more than that if searching for max temps. Literally less than 5 min if using an air cooler.

Prime 95 at least on this board and a 9900k is not a good idea.
Talking core temps in the 90's +.
At least I was not comfortable with that on my new CPU.

Is anyone else having issues with adaptive setting for vcore?  i'm trying to set it to 1.35 to 1.4 range, and when i test afterwards (from the stress test in UEFI) sometimes it'll hit as high as 1.5 or 1.6v which is way to high.  Why is it doing this?   it doesnt do this when i set to override mode

How does the voltage do when stressing in a Windows program like Intel Extreme Tuning Utility or IntelBurnTest V2?
I would view the voltage in the included Eleet program.

Is the AVX setting set to the default of 3 in the Bios or did you set it to 0?
A lot of Forum Members are telling other members to set this at 0 but they do not have a Motherboard with this new setting.
The X299 has two AVX settings AVX2 and AVX3 I have mine set to 2 and 3

The newest version of Prime has the disable checkbox but I think it still runs AVX. I was trying it but no matter what I did my frequency was dropping to what it would be when my AVX offset would kick in. Downloaded an older version of prime, edited the local.txt file to disable AVX and worked perfectly

Not sure what it is defaulted to, have not got that far into the bios yet.
