I was just looking at nVidias page on the Titan X & noticed under system requirements, it says 24GB system RAM. I didn't think system Ram would matter.. Any Thoughts?

I am assuming this is for their deep memory thing. I don't see any reason they won't run just fine for gaming with whatever your normal desktop has, down to as low as 6 GB on some X58 systems.

It's just a misprint. The Titan X manual says different:

    Minimum System Requirements
    > Motherboard
PCI Express® or PCI Express 3.0-compliant motherboard
with one dual-width x16 graphics slot.
    > System Power Supply
Minimum 600 W or greater system power supply with two 6-pin
    PCI Express supplementary power connectors.
    > Operating System
    Microsoft Windows 8, 32-bit or 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7, 32-bit or 64-bit Linux, 32-bit or 64-bit FreebSD x86
    > System Memory
2 GB system memory (4 GB recommended)

    > 300 MB of available hard disk space

    Hi raf.the.stampede,

I am very sorry for any confusion as the memory requirements listed in the manual are incorrect. Please however keep in mind that the Titan X is able to run with less than 24GB of system memory, but that is the minimum recommended by Nvidia at this time.

Is there any information that shows performance issues if using a Titan X under the recommended memory specs? I plan on using the card mainly for gaming and occasionally for rendering, modeling and Photoshop.

For Titan X is enough 4x4GB any DDR3 or DDR4
Dual or Quad Channel and any i7 processor 2nd, 3rd, 4th Generation or Intel Xtreme.

But how will that negatively affect us with less than 24gb of ram?

I could be wrong, but I think we'll discover shortly that the 2 GB min 4 GB recommended is the correct spec. There is no reason the GPU would need 24GB min and 48GB recommended that would put this GPU out of the min spec for over ~90%+ users. That just makes zero sense.

Well, its price point is already out of the reach of ~90% of people. I hope you're right though.

Many folks buying this are only running 6-8-12GB of memory.

And you're running dual channel and unless you're doing some huge rendering or photo manip, more than half of it is never doing a thing. Not being critical here, but unless you're actually need it, why install it?

I actually need ram regardless even if I get the Titan X. Have 8GB of DDR4 2133 in my desktop and ran out today using photoshop (working with 36MP D800 files). Had to rely on the page file, so slow lol.

    I'll probably get 16GB (4x4GB) DDR4 2666.

I'm pretty sure the Titan X wouldn't need 24GB minimum, as HeavyHemi said, it wouldn't make any sense.

I did not mean to start an inquisition, but I guess I'm glad I did. It'll be interesting to see if there is any performance differences between those with <24G and those with more. I don't think they will be significant though.

The card can work with less than 24,  but recommend to have at least 24.  If they ever use over 12gb then the card will need 12gb for swap memory.

I see. Well I doubt we'll use 12gb of vram anytime soon.

Looks like it's time to upgrade :)

Yup, I'll probably end up getting 32GB instead.

But do you know exactly why the requirements call for 24GB?

The card can work with less than 24,  but recommend to have at least 24.  If they ever use over 12gb then the card will need 12gb for swap memory.

So, whether ppl like it or not, it's at least 24gigs. Anything under that that be compromising the GPUs performance.

Some ppl Need to Grow Up and face it. Upgrade ur memory, or don't buy the GPU then. If I were to buy it, i would at least use 32gigs or 48gigs.

Right now i'me still waiting for the 6-8gig GPUs to come out.

That is assuming if whatever game you are running will max out the 12GB limit on the card. Which is unlikely in the current state of gaming, even at 4K resolution.

Re: System Requirements for Titan X? 2015/03/19 07:07:14 (permalink)
I'd like to hear the reason for the requirement. My understanding is 24Gb is required to swap texture files from the VRAM to the system RAM. Is that correct? If so, it makes sense that you'd need some similiar quantity of RAM.

My understanding is this: loading a game, the texture files go from HDD>RAM>VRAM. When in gameplay, new texture files are needed, so the unneeded files in VRAM go to RAM. If RAM is full, it gets dumped into the page file? So the danger is, while playing a game, the 12GB of VRAM dumps such a huge quantity of files onto the RAM (which is probably being used by the game for other purposes anyway) that is has to go to the page file and any recall of those textures has to first go through the system RAM which would require a swap of existing files in RAM to page file, textures to to VRAM, then original page files back to RAM. Is that right?

If that's the case, then 24GB/48GB makes sense. Because with 24GB you could do a total swap of files from the VRAM and still have RAM left for system use without purging the RAM. With 48GB you could do two swaps, etc.

Now my real question, I have 8GB of system RAM. I've NEVER had the experience of having more VRAM than system RAM. Never even heard of it happening. I plan on doing a total rebuild once Skylake is released, but I need to know that 8GB will get me by for another 6 months with this card. Assuming I never hit the 12GB max on the Titan X (can't see how that would happen, even at 5760x1080), am I going to have a problem?

I'm using 16gb of DDR4 with 4gb dimms. Me switching to 32gb would most likely mean me going to 8gb dimms since I would still want the room to upgrade to 64gb when the prices come down.

Come on guys,if your buying Titans you can afford a little ram right?
I have 32 Gigs of ram myself.

And you're running dual channel and unless you're doing some huge rendering or photo manip, more than half of it is never doing a thing. Not being critical here, but unless you're actually need it, why install it?

I never said i used it all.
At the time that i got my ram it was so cheap that it was one of those why not get it.
And thanks for pointing out my ram error, fixed.

seems like a non issue.. nobody is going to use 12GB of VRAM for quite some time.. heck most people don't even hit 4.

So, unless a game or application utilizes 12gb of vram, having less than 24gb of system ram will have the titan x perform the same as 24 or above? Is that correct?

It's just a misprint. The Titan X manual says different:

    Minimum System Requirements
    > Motherboard
PCI Express® or PCI Express 3.0-compliant motherboard
with one dual-width x16 graphics slot.
    > System Power Supply
Minimum 600 W or greater system power supply with two 6-pin
    PCI Express supplementary power connectors.
    > Operating System
    Microsoft Windows 8, 32-bit or 64-bit Microsoft Windows 7, 32-bit or 64-bit Linux, 32-bit or 64-bit FreebSD x86
    > System Memory
2 GB system memory (4 GB recommended)
    > DVD-ROM drive or internet connection for driver installation
    > 300 MB of available hard disk space

Except an EVGA tech guy responded to this by saying the titan x manual is actually wrong, and the correct minimum is 24 gigs.

What I really want to know is: If a game does NOT utilize 12gb of Vram (non do actually atm,) do we lose any performance if we have less than 24gb of ram? Can we get an answer please!
