Hi all,
I'm experiencing a weird smell from my 850gm after playing some games for about 15 minutes. I recently installed a 3080 ftw3 and the 850gm (coming from a 3070 ftw3 and 650gm) and the problem started only after I installed both. I thought it was just the PSU (since the smell was stuck to the PSU after I took it out) and got a replacement. With the replacement in, the problem persisted. When close to the PSU, it's definitely radiating some heat and I haven't seen the fan spin up at all (and I can't even turn off eco mode since it's automatic). So I guess my question is this, has anyone else noticed this, and does the smell just go away? I'd rather not fry my new card.

Two units with the same issue? Must be the normal hot, but not burning electronic smell.

I guess, there haven't been any BSODs under load or anything suggesting system instability.
I'll see if I can get any info from EVGA Support to be certain.

    Hmmm
Reading another thread about this very power supply
My 850 Supernova GM fan runs max every now and then. Otherwise quiet as promised. It is rather worrying though. But I guess it is the normal fan curve as suggested on the box. But still can I live with it
I can still return it to Amazon by February 11th

After using it for the day yesterday, that's the exact behavior that I've noticed as well. I wish they would remove the eco and set a proper curve so that it wouldn't run so hot.

Is it because of that? it runs hot then ramps up??
I hope EVGA knows about this. There will be no fix for us. possibly a rev 2 for the lucky ones
The Corsair SF750 was brilliant by comparison

And it goes off again, high revs spinning whilst writing this. I can't wait for summer!!!

I am regretting this. But I just ordered custom cables so,,,,,,,,.......

I am curious how you have your power supply mounted in your case? Is it a more modern case where it pulls air in from the bottom? Does it have a screen mesh? Maybe its badly designed and doesnt let much air in, remove the screen? Just a suggestion, hope you can get it sorted

I started with a Dell Optiplex 7010, upgraded to several different models into a Precision T1700 case swap. Now I have a decent setup that I am happy with:
    Ryzen 5 3600
ASUS B550 TUFF Gaming plus wifi
    32GB DDR4 3200 Crucial Ballistix white
EVGA GTX 1060 6gb (horrible spiral cooler)
    EVGA 750 G6 power supply
    Phanteks P360A white case
Oh here's an associate code too if you want 6L3ADV80V7N7JMB

I'm using a Lian Li TU150, so it's mounted right above the front intake fan with an exhaust vent out the right side of the case.

Still using the PSU. So far so good but the smell underload from it heating up is still there. Currently waiting on EVGA support for insight.

As Sajin noted earlier, you're likely just smelling the remnants of the typical chemical wash that all power supplies get before leaving the factory.  When power supplies get warmer, either due to internal heat or due to heat in the system, it's not unusual to get a bit of a smell from the power supply.  With power supplies, most "odor" problems either stem from one or two things - sort of an ozone odor from the chemical wash when the system gets warm, or your power supply failed badly and you have the acrid odor and your system won't turn on.  The sort of smell you have is not indicative of any sort of pending failure of the power supply.
