If we cannot upgrade from a 2080 to a 3080 or better while still in my 90 day step up window... then I have NO clue what the point of the program is even for or the purpose of it. I mean this is the EXACT situation it sells me on. In what situation would a step up work if not for when a new generation of video cards is released.

Having just forked out $1500+taxes on a 2080 then right after finding out about the new 3080 which is miles better and cheaper irks me to no end, I feel terrible about my purchase :(

I know what you mean, my 90 days ends the 16th.  I know it shouldn't, but this has really left a foul taste in my mouth.  EVGA has been my brand for a very long time, I really would never see myself going with someone else, til now.  With everything else going on somehow this feels like a kick to the nuts.

I bought my 2080 TI FTW 3 Ultra for $1500 on July 13th. I have a two part dilemma
  1. Get the 3080 (if I can even get on the list) but leave money on the table for not getting a comparible value for what I paid (~$800 vs $1500).
  2. I try and wait a week on the 24th in case the 3090 is available. If it is, great! If not, the 3080s will likely all be sold out and now I can't even use the step up program before my 90 days is up.
EVGA if you're listening, I (and I'm sure many, many others here) would really like to just get ON a list before my 90 days is up (for me, ideally for the 3090). I don't care if you won't have them in stock for weeks or even months. I just would really like to not have my 90 days run out while waiting for stock to come back.

October 7th is when my step up runs out and I'm just hoping to snag at least a 3080. Would love the 3090 but that is out of my window unless they do something crazy and list it there before release. Please EVGA I feel like a total clown for getting the 2080ti XC Ultra in July at Best Buy because somehow they had one that day :/ The dumb people like me who spent $1400 need some love lol!

Let's face it, EVGA doesn't have the best cooling or the best prices. People buy for the support in which the step-up program plays a good part.
I had a lot of tech related issues with EVGA cards in the past but still came back.

If they don't come through with this, I am done with the company.

As for me, today is my very last day, and of course there is nothing. I feel really bad for the handful of folks I've seen that will miss it by one day (9/16 step-up option expiration) but even a week IMO is too close also. For me, this was my first EVGA card and I had no problems with it, it has been great, but missing the step-up by such a short period of time certainly gives me no reason to stay when I upgrade.

I did not either, I actually haven't been in PC gaming for several years and just recently got back into it and built a new machine, so I didn't even know the 30 series was on the horizon when I purchased.

I mean, I get that, and I appreciate that they offer it, but if I can't use it, then does it really matter to me who I buy a GPU from? Most of the people who are going to use the option are going to be those who already know what's coming down the pipe, because they'll have bought in at a properly informed time, I would think...

I have a 2080ti currently. Can I trade for a 3080 if 3090's arent available? Would I have to pay anything (other then shipping perhaps)

You will only have to pay for the return shipping at the time of paying for your Step-Up. EVGA will not credit you the difference.

It seems to me that some may be working themselves up into a bit of a lather.  I'm looking to step up from a 2070 Super FTW3 Ultra (Still a very nice card) that I purchased in the latter part of July.  If RTX 3080s are listed before my 90 days comes up, I will immediately start the process to step up.  If 3080s aren't listed by that time, I will probably just enjoy the 2070 Super that I just purchased - because it still is a pretty nice card even with all the improvements that we are being promised by the 3000 series cards.  So I will cross my fingers and remain hopeful until I am absolutely sure of a "no."

In the same boat as you, did a build few weeks ago and needed a GFX card. Picked up a 2070 Super KO and have 71 days left to step up. If a 3070 gets added in time we'll do it, if not, the 2070 will serve us well.

I always enjoy a new gfx card launch. The sense of entitlement, whining and empty threats all make for good reading....

I do not believe there has been a situation in video card-land where the next generation of video card is so powerful and over $1000 cheaper. Comparing it to other card series launches. Unless of course $1000 is nothing to you.

Well you may not have known this time and it worked out against you but now you do know and next time you'll still know so if with the knowledge you choose to go elsewhere then you basically are choosing not to have the option to upgrade at all.

The fact that you weren't aware won't make you choice to go elsewhere next time be just as negative as missing it this time.

Put yourself in step up for 3080 and you'll atleast get that and as long as step up opens for 3090 before your 90 day period ends you can switch queues. If it doesn't then yi atleast get a 3080. It may sting to paid that much and then get "downgraded" to a $700ish card but the fact is the price could have been anything and you got to have 2080ti performance quote a while before snytbi g else could compete for less.

Dont look at it as money lost but as performance gained.

And again you still have the chance you'll get into the 3090 queue but get in the 3080 first so you don't miss that chance.

Look it up if you don't know what I'm talking about but switching queues while your 90 days is still going is totally fine.

The fact is you bet against Nvidia and that's (obviously) not a smart bet to make these days.

Man plenty of us spent just as much as you and weren't going to sit back and watch its resale value be destroyed by new cards. By not selling before hand like others you were basically betting against Nvidia delivering performance gains (and ignoring months of speculation of +50% gains) the one thing that wasn't predicted was the doubling of cores (and well the $100 less pricing for 3080 and under with 3090 $100 higher).

The fact was it was clear to people who actually cared about their value of the large purchase that selling early was the only guarantee that you wouldn't get screwed.

I sold Aug 1st for 88% of what my card cost and have been fine dealing with a cheap backup card for now.

It a shame there is so much ill feeling by people who are missing out. Buying tech at the end of its lifecycle is a risky choice. New version may be better, may be better value. And old version will always depreciate straight away, regardless of when you purchased it.

Ampere and Big Navi have been rumoured for months. Anyone buying recently and complaining about being days out of a step up have only themselves to blame. They should have waited. Step Up only happens on release, not on announcement.

People have gambled and it doesn’t help that new cards offer same performance at much lower cost if comparing 2080Ti to 3070. If you can afford to gamble great. If you cannot then do not do it.

Yes, it's really "a shame" that people want to use an advertised service as intended. SMH @ some of the replies in here.

But people aren’t. People are expecting this programme to be changed to suit their needs. Should someone be able to purchase an item 80 days ago, then get on a list for a potential upgrade that may or may not happen at a future date when that date is not known. Say this is being on a list.

I may as well buy a EVGA card, then ask for a list to be made for me for a 4080 card as I am sure that will be better and so long as I let EVGA know within 90 days of purchase that I would like the next big thing, they should honour it.

Why have people purchased prior to 90 days of a new release and expect a programme with a 90 day policy be changed for them?

So those who want to use the service advertised, step up to a card that is on the available list within 90 days of purchase. Simples.

People are asking for the new cards to be added to the list within a reasonable time frame, that is all. As others have said, what is even the point of the step-up program if that will not be the case?

Stop with your corporate apologism, EVGA cards are not free. They charge premium price in fact, so we expect premium service.

The EVGA Step-Up program helps you have the peace of mind to purchase your favourite product now, knowing you can upgrade to the latest parts that come out within the first 90 days from your purchase.

If you purchased within 90 days before release date then you don’t have a problem do you? If you didn’t then why is that someone else’s problem?

Also step up items are limited, I see only one current 2080 model and one 2070. They are normally the lower models and only listed if availability allows. That is all stated in the programme you wish to use and are so horrified that you cannot be allocated whatever you want before your time limit allows. Where does it state a purchaser can reserve a potential future release that may or may not become available for Step Up after the 90 days, providing they get their request in before 90 days.

So you are surprised that people are disappointed to miss the date by maybe one day? Of course they are sad, but that's the rules, nobody is even seriously arguing that. So no, it's not "a shame" that some people are disappointed. It's normal but so are the rules.

Bigger issue is that there is no clear communication from EVGA what is gonna happen with the list. Stop moving goal posts.

Here's the thing, hedging yourself against the "risk" in this "risky" choice is literally the very reason the Step Up program exists. According to the EVGA Step-Up webpage:

The EVGA Step-Up program helps you have the peace of mind to purchase your favorite product now, knowing you can upgrade to the latest parts that come out within the first 90 days from your purchase. In the computer hardware world, 90 days is a lifetime! With a valid part, once per purchase, you can upgrade your EVGA product by paying the difference between what you paid and the price on EVGA's website. It's really that simple!

If you're missing out by a few days, that really is a shame, but I think the greater frustration is felt by folks that should be well within the 90 day window at release time. EVGA has been incredibly vague and there is speculation that people may not even be able get on a waiting list for some time.

I built my new machine at the end of July and needed a new GPU. I bought a 2080 Super from EVGA explicitly for the Step-Up program, to protect myself in case new cards were released. The new cards are releasing in a few days and people (including me) are now rightfully asking if EVGA is going to honor their end of the bargain. We just want to know if we will be able to get on a list when the cards release. So far, the answer has been "We won't know anything until release" or "it may depend on supplies." I think people are then rightfully frustrated at the lack of clear assurance that their investment really will be protected.

If people can't get on the list for a few months, that effectively renders any 20-series purchaser ineligible for the program, which defeats the entire point of the program. It's not entitlement, it's asking EVGA to back up their marketing tool that generates them very real revenue.

I'm just trying to grab whatever I can get. I have a feeling I can easily sell it used if it doesn't fit in my ITX case on day 1.

Notice this nice piece in their terms for the Step-up program. Looks like a easy get out of jail free card. I've personally still got 30+ days on my eligibility and knowing the demand for these, thats probably not going to be enough. Best of luck to all!
  • Products known to have a limited availability will not be made available to the Step-Up program. (Limited availability determined by EVGA.)

Re: Stepup for RTX 3000 Series 2020/09/16 03:22:53 (permalink)

I built my new machine at the end of July and needed a new GPU. I bought a 2080 Super from EVGA explicitly for the Step-Up program, to protect myself in case new cards were released. The new cards are releasing in a few days and people (including me) are now rightfully asking if EVGA is going to honor their end of the bargain. We just want to know if we will be able to get on a list when the cards release. So far, the answer has been "We won't know anything until release" or "it may depend on supplies." I think people are then rightfully frustrated at the lack of clear assurance that their investment really will be protected.

I agree with this.  I don’t agree with those whose 90 days ran out last week or this and wanted a list.

I would hope EVGA honour their step up programme with 3090, 3080 and 3070 offerings even if they are XC3 level only.  It does not look like the programme is designed for like for like exchange, ie Hybrid cooler old model replaced with hybrid cooler new model, which is a shame as people buy a particular cooler type or cooler size for rig requirements but it seems we are lucky if whatever we paid for an old card gets put towards the new.

Having not been building a PC for 10 years, I am not one of those who buys and replaces often.  Therefore I don’t know if the current VFM offered by going to Ampere from Turing is unprecedented?

let’s hope tomorrow or whenever official release date happens clears everything up.

reviews are released today aren’t they?  Guess founders editions only?

Hoping to receive some good news in 3 hours or so. I bought my 2080 Super at the end of July and chose an EVGA model SPECIFICALLY AND SOLELY because of the Step-Up Program. I don’t care when they honor it, so long as they eventually hold up their end of the deal. If they know they’re not going to be able to fulfill the upgrades from 20-30 series, they’ve known for quite some time now. If I end up screwed over, I can’t say that I’ll ever spend another penny on anything branded with an EVGA logo ever again, which is a real shame. I’m confident they’ll do the right thing. We’ll know soon enough. Fingers crossed.
