Yep, Uncle Sam stiffs you twice. I'd have to say that's the downfall of the step-up. Overall many times you would be better off selling the original product and buying the next one.

You would pay the same taxes on the new card either way.

Agreed, but you already paid tax on the previous card was my point with my comment. So in my eyes you're paying full tax twice. I'm not saying the step up is a bad gig, you just get dinged in a sort because you didn't wait and buy the newer card the first time. Just my thoughts, others will disagree but it's whatever. Not EVGA, just the way things work.

EDIT: And yes, I do understand you are buying 2 different cards and they are giving you store credit..

I totally agree with you.  EVGA actually has every legal right to go ahead and credit the tax amount that they charged you on the original purchase.  They are choosing to view the transaction as an additional sale...when they could legally classify it as an "exchange" program. Other stores that allow "upgrades" do this all of the time.  EVGA could absolutely do this if they wanted to.

Quick update on this: I recently completed my Step-Up and EVGA did NOT charge me the full tax again...They only charged me the tax on the difference in cost.  So perhaps they are changing things up again.

I think it depends if you bought the original card directly from EVGA or from a store
I have seen them charge just the difference when bought at EVGA
Maybe they can reverse the tax if they collected it in the first place where they can’t if you got it at Bestbuy ???

I just did a Step Up for a card bought from Newegg. EVGA charged me the full tax on the Step Up.

It could be, but it would be the right thing to have some consistency or explanation on how it is done, instead of having us trying to guess one way or the other.

Nope, EVGA charged me full tax on the last Stick-Up I did and I bought the previous card directly from EVGA.

Wait a second, I just noticed EVGA charged me more tax on the Stick-Up card than their normal tax rate they charge me if I just bought the card. What the heck?

Stick-Up Tax = $41.28

Non Stick-Up tax = $38.05
