Steam experienced its highest ever service load over the weekend, with over 20.3 million users concurrently logged in. Of these over 6.4 million were actively playing a game. Its previous service load record was a little over 19 million users, hit just last month (February 2020). This is particularly interesting because the week of 9th March didn't particularly have any big game releases, and according a report by The Verge, most of the 6.4 million gaming were hooked to old favorites, such as CS:GO (>1.02 million), PUBG (>700k), and Dota 2 (>500k).

This record could be just as temporary, with big releases such as "Doom Eternal" lined up for the upcoming weekend. A spike in online gaming and other forms of on-demand entertainment shouldn't surprise anyone in the middle of a global pandemic. The COVID-19 outbreak has forced most governments quarantine large populations, forcing businesses to have their employees work from home. Steam remains the leading game digital distribution and DRM platform.

I have a strong feeling that the Corona virus has caused a surge of gaming with people shut indoors.

Correct... this is an indication of the power that COVID19 has on our society right now. I have a feeling in the next week or two, we'll see this record be broken again. we still haven't hit the peak of the virus spread, now that testing is more readily available.

I'm not taking this as seriously as many, but I still see people out at coffee shops, going to dinner, etc. Good to know that if there's ever really a crisis... it will help with our population control, and I can count on Darwinism to play a key role.

It's not 'play time' folks... stay at home, be cognizant of your surroundings, and take it seriously.

**EDIT: Hopefully EVGA has all of its employees at home as well...

Here in Ohio you can't even go to dinner, as they were all shuttered. Bars too. Just take out for now on. So bring on the mighty Steam back log !

Doesn't surprise me, we heard in the news that there was some unknown 'event' in Ohio whereby 100,000 may have been exposed to the virus? No further information was given out...makes me wonder what in the world is going on up there. Glad they shut everything down though... also heard OSU was 'The' first to shut down as an entire University... good on them for taking the lead on that and not screwing around with the health of the student body.

Sort of misdirection though. It's also spring break for most of the US. Now with schools shutting down past spring break, we'll know more next week if this is actually Covid-19 related.

Even with all the esports events getting canceled I get the feeling we still have yet to see the full impact of everyone hopping onto steam at once. I hope Valve's network is as robust as they make it out to be, because it's going to be under a really heavily load for the next couple months.
