Well it was bound to happen sooner or later. Steam will stop supporting Windows XP and Vista. It costs a lot of money supporting old operating systems and gamers have had plenty of time to upgrade to Windows 7 or Windows 10. I personally say good riddance as those old operating systems as they are no longer supported by Microsoft.

Windows XP is about 17 years old so really no need to support it any longer.

I found WinXP to be a good OS in it's day, but it's time to pull the plug...

I can’t really see why it would have been supported this long to begin with for XP. Vista seems like it might still be worth some support but really probably the user base isn’t worth the cost it would require.

because there are plenty of steam games that never got updated to support vista/7 and those games are about to perma break, what this means though is I'm going to to be taking a snap shot of my XP machine's hard drive soon to back it all up and then force steam to remain in offline mode indefinitely.

Yup. Valve doesn't care if games actually work just as long as they get money. They sell plenty of games that don't work and continue to sell them when made aware of their incompatibility.

I think the topic title is a bit misleading. There is nothing about XP or Vista that precludes launching Steam. On the other hand, they could dictate that DirectX 11 video card is minimum required and they could limit installation that way I suppose. that's not really dictating XP or Vista not being used, but rather dictating DirectX 11.

Microsoft's forced updates every 6 months have made it the most invasive OS they've made to date.

They already did this with 98SE in 2005 and 2000 in 2010, the issue now though is there are plenty of games that just dont work on newer than XP.
