The latest Steam Hardware survey from January 2022 shows significant growth for VR headsets with the number of connected units reaching 3.4 million or 2.14% of Steam users. This is up from 2.95 million in December 2021 with the Meta Quest 2 responsible for the majority of this growth now accounting for 46.02% of the VR headsets used on Steam despite being able to operate without a connected computer. Meta now controls 67.3% of the PC VR market with Valve coming in second at 14.4%, HTC third at 11.2%, and Microsoft fourth with just 5% market share. The total number of monthly-connected VR headsets has risen 29.5% since this time last year but it remains to be seen if this growth will continue past the holiday season.

Growth of VR seems to be growing slowly, but it is growing.

I recently picked up an Oculus and have to say it's pretty cool but as with anything with such a small user base it doesn't get AAA games other than like Resident Evil 4, Skyrim, Half Life Alyx and Fallout 4. Most of the big titles besides Half Life Alyx are just ports and really not the best job. That said some of the games are a lot of fun.

I am wondering what will happen with the PS5 and its VR. While now nobody would release a major title for a headset with 3.4 million users but I could see the PSVR2 quickly hitting that number and the games being built to be ported to Steam. Right now it seems like a lot of VR developers are trying to make games that can run on the headset. The PS5 power could really change that and bring a new era into the headsets on PC I feel as it will have the base of users and more power than a mobile phone for the games.

Quest 2 does a lot of things right -- price point, wireless pc tethering, passthrough camera. It's a bit misdirection to talk about VR in general though. These are predominantly Quest 2 numbers. Valve would like ot believe Index matters, but it's not meant as a baseline consumer product like Quest is.
