Hi All

Do you all remember when the 2000 Mhz Pentium4 hit the market and what a big rage it gave the crowd, for just being the first ever released 2000Mhz CPU, even though it's overall performance wasn't much faster than the AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1400Mhz rofl, it only shined in Q3A based games this is where it's Rambus Memory interface and its Netburst Tech really showed it's true native performance, also it came with SSE2, only back then SSE2 was not really supported, although these days it might get along a lot better than back then.

But overall the 1.40Ghz Athlon T-Bird was the king over this CPU, but for the ones that really loved Intel this was Intel's best at the time. And since there are quite a lot of Intel users here, I thought to share some awesome history of back then as I bought this mainly for Quake III Arena, it was the best you could get for just that game rofl.

So it all began yesterday, after having a nice BBQ at my sister's place, she gave me my old gaming system from 2001 back and it came with these parts:

Intel Pentium4 2.00Ghz Willamette Socket 423 256KB L2, 400Mhz FSB
ASUS P4T Rev. 1.07 0135 With Intel i850 Chipset & AGP Pro 50 x4
2x 256MB PC-800-45 ECC Rambus Samsung Original
2x 128MB PC-800-45 Non-ECC Rambus Samsung Original
HIS ATi Radeon 9550 AGP 256MB 128Bit DDR
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
3-Com 3C905C TX-M  10/100MBit Ethernet Card
Sweex 5 Ports USB 2.0 PCI Card, 4 External, 1 Internal
Enermax Modu 82 525 Watt PSU
A-Open H600-B ATX Case

My plan is to clean this thoroughly and make it look like new again as when I built it back in 2001, which will have this name & layout:

Stealth 2001

Intel Pentium4 2.00Ghz Willamette Socket 423 256KB L2, 400Mhz FSB
ASUS P4T Rev. 1.07 0135 With Intel i850 Chipset & AGP Pro 50 x4
2x 256MB PC-800-45 ECC Rambus Samsung Original
2x 128MB PC-800-45 Non-ECC Rambus Samsung Original
Gainward GeForce3 AGP 64MB Golden Sample Rev.A 0131 with ViVo.
Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1
3-Com 3C905C TX-M  10/100MBit Ethernet Card
Sweex 5 Ports USB 2.0 PCI Card, 4 External, 1 Internal
Enermax Modu 82 525 Watt PSU
A-Open H600-B ATX Case

So here some pics of my progress :)

And there you have it, it's all done ! xDDD All I need to do now is a first bootup, which should gop well, I will run some old games from 1999 to 2003, see how this P4 does

The only 3D Mark I really liked was Mad Onion's 3D Mark 2001 SE, so I do plan on running that one on this 2Ghz P4 :)
Stay Tuned for more in action pics and 1080p video's!

    Hay many thanks guys!

Also many thanks for my 28th Blue Ribbon rjohnson11 !!!
Well it was only a monster with games that were based on id Tech3 engine for the rest a 1.4Ghz Athlon Thunderbird or Pentium !!!/S 1400 really crushed it xD

But when playing games like X-Wing Alliance, Quake III Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty + United Offensive, Jedi Knight: Jedi Outcast & Jedi Academy, this system was the best you could get. It destroyed everything out there, Pentium4 actually performed on it's best with Rambus memory over single channel SDRAM or PC_2100 DDR Ram setups.

So if any of you plan on doing a Retro P4 build go for the Intel i850 or i850-E chipset and use RDRAM.

The P4 Xeons used the Intel i860 chipset and these even supported the much faster PC-1066 Rambus memory, some of these systems had even 8 slots to company 4GB of Rambus PC-1066 RDRAM!!! and this stuff was very VERY expensive back in the day xDDDDDD
So far only Tyan & iWiLL had the support for the i860 with PC-1066.

If I'd ever do such a system I'd go for the P4 Xeons that have Hyper Threading and are based on Northwood C architechture with this Supermico P4DC6:
    http://www.supermicro.nl/...ard/Xeon/860/P4DC6.cfm

Keep in mind when using RDRAM you need to fill all 4 banks, when only using two RDRAM modules , for the two slots that would not be used you had them Dummy sticks, which would trick the system that they were filled also rofl.

Wow that is amazing, not to mention before my time. Nice to see this old tech. On another note, thank you for the bolded part. I have been trying to remember the name of that game for about 4 years now... Now when I get home I can get it and finally play it again.

    -16GB RAM.
    -GTX 1070.

    Thanks man

Hah! I had the Ti-4600 from Leadtek after this GeForce3 xD and Actually the NV25 which was used for the GeForce 4 Ti AGP x4 line was nothing but a GeForce 3 Ti on steroids xDDD

The NV28 was used for the GeForce4 Ti AGP x8 series which had these models:

    GeForce4 Ti 4200 AGP 8x --> a GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP x8 support
    GeForce4 Ti 4800 SE --> a GeForce4 Ti 4400 with AGP x8 support
    GeForce4 Ti 4800 Ultra --> a GeForce4 Ti 4600 with AGP x8 support

So basically all what NV28 had over NV25 was AGP x8 support, for the rest it was all identical to that of NV25.

GeForce3 uses NV20 so does geForce3 Ti, even some call it NV20 Ti as the Ti models go, the Ti line added Advanced Pixel Shader & Soft Shadows Support, which the GeForce 4 Ti line improved just due to their greater capability of speed.

GeForce3/GeForce3 Ti has 4 Pixel shaders & 4 vertex Shaders, GeForce4 has 8 Pixel shaders and 4 vertex shaders. in many cases a Ti 4600 was more than twice as fast as a GeForce3 Classic rofl.

Wow, I didn't know most of that lol.
All I remember was that I had to pay my Dad a bunch of cash in my mid teens for the damn thing.
    Interesting to know though :).

The starwars jedi games bring back memories too. Kyle Katarn.
Makes me even think back to the older Dark Forces games... they don't quite make them how they used to lol.

This was the top dog of 2002 days, I thought I'd bring up some happy memories with this beauty, which I bought in Australia via ebay.com.au for about 70 euro's incl shipping, pretty neat for a boxed Leadtek Ti-4600, since these are very hard to find in such a complete state

    Re:Stealth 2001 - A Renovation of my P4 2Ghz S423 High End Gaming System of 2001. 2017/02/24 17:55:04 (permalink)
    Hey all

No Ryzen for me, too boring As I have something way cooler to work on at the moment!
Today I bought an upgrade for this golden oldie!!! :D YUS!

For this system I have bought some Awesome ram for it:

    4x Samsung Original 512MB PC800-40 ECC RDRAM
    (MR18R162GEG0-CM8)
It took me over 3 years to find this exact memory type and it had to be PC-800-40ns with ECC support, as that the ASUS P4T does support ECC which was pretty unique.
The Reason I wanted PC-800-40ns ECC is that this will be my P4 Retro Workstation, and that ram type is the fastest possible for this system, which is also used with Dual Socket 603/604 i860 systems.

So now I only seek the following:

    ASUS/NEC 5 Port USB 2.0 PCI Card
Intel Server Pro 1000 Ethernet Adapter
    LS120 Super Floppy Drive

If anyone can help me find those ^^^ parts, that would be grand

Here some history & specs of this system, as this P4 means quite a lot to me, after the data I found on it as well... Some old memories regained.

    Stealth 2001

    Intel Pentium4 2.00Ghz Willamette, 256KB L2, Socket 423
ASUS P4T Intel i850 Chipset for Socket 423
    2x 128MB PC_800-45 non ECC + 2x 256MB PC-800-45 ECC Rambus RDRAM
Leadtek GeForce WinFast A250 Ultra TD AGP 128MB 128Bit DDR
Creative Labs Sound Blaster LIve 5.1
Western Digital 60GB ATA 133 7200 rpm HDD
    Sony 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive
    Enermax 525Watt PSU

So if anyone can help me out with these parts that would be grand

The P4 2Ghz I bought for it around 2006 for 5 USD from Ebay Hong Hong. I kept the P4 1.7Ghz in my display cabinet.
My main goal is to rebuild this system to it's max upgradable possible setup without the use of Power Leap CPU Socket convertors and such other things and reuse it for retro Lan Parties and such fun activities :)
This system I used to train with for 4 hours per day on when I used to play in a Quake II, Quake III & Descent 3 League at my Computer Club, we would have matches every week
So this is what I did before I started to collect 3dfx VGA cards, also this is something I really wanted to share with you guys

The only real reason I went for the P4 was because of its SSE2 CPU instruction set which it had in advantage over everything else.
That with a Gainward GeForce Golden Sample Power Pack 64MB 128Bit DDR + ViVo made it a powerful setup. Later in 2002 I upgraded to the Leadtek GeForce4 Ti-4600 Ultra

For everything else the P4 S423 2Ghz performs like a P3-S 1.4Ghz, that is only if SSE2 was not supported so yeah a P4 2Ghz was pretty much crap in most other applications & games.
But things like Lame MP3 Encoding, did go quite well, so hey it's not as bad as some tired to make it, right

The bottom line is that I love this rare retro build and I hope to enjoy it for many years to come

Well I do have some upgrades upcoming for this classic, which are the following parts
4x 512MB PC-800-40ns ECC Rambus RDRAM from Samsung Original, wasn't cheap, but it's the best and the max the ASUS P4T can handle:
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/36...ame=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This is what I got from an old friend from 2CPU.com:

Mitsubishi Electronics MF357G-3111 MAL LS120 Super Floppy Drive:

5x 120MB LS120 Floppy Disks New never used:

5 Port USB 2.0 PCI Card + Front panel; 2 External + 3 for front panel

And this Intel Pro/1000MT Desktop Adapter

My main goal is to make my system as maxed out upgraded as possible, which would of cost a good 5000 USD back in the day, 2001 that being.
All by using native parts only no convertors and such things, that would be considered cheating

To me this is a lot more fun than building something new, I always have found renovating old relics a major fun thing to do.
2CPU.com Community has been my home since May 08, 2001, cool to have such support from though, Special Thanks go to 2CPU member SadTropher for the donations of free parts

Stay Tuned for when all these parts have been installed

SadTropher from 2CPU.com linked me some better options, Silicon Image made SATA II Raid cards for PCI-X that is reverse compliant with PCI 2.1 32 Bit
But they also made PCI 2.1 32 Bit cards as well, so I am gonna let that settle for a bit, but yeah I do seek either of these cards, just not a rush as of yet

Well, the Ram is confusing me atm, as it arrived today, here it is:

4x 512MB PC-800-40ns ECC Rambus RDRAM from Samsung Original:

    Top side:

    Rear side:

Here the ram neatly installed :)

Close up of the motherboard and all the parts:

Closeup of the Ram, CPU & GPU:

Closeup of the Ram & CPU

Everything works lots faster now, thanks to this ram upgrade, it puts the P4 @2.00 Ghz and the Ti-4600 to their proper rights.
But when I went in to the Bios, it only shows 1920MB instead of 2048MB
But CPU-ID does detect 2GB and 4x 512MB, so that did prove me that the ram I bought does work fine.
It could be some sort of limit or something with the ASUS P4Tand/or the Intel i850 Chipset.

Here the bios showing 1920MB system ram instead instead of 2048MB, which is 128MB less.

What I may need is a Bios update the Bios I am using now is 1.006 Beta 004 as you can see here in the post:

That might take care of this max installed system ram issue.

But then again Bios 1.007 & 1.008.001 Beta don't offer the updates I seek, if a Bios works I mostly leave it alone.
    https://www.asus.com/supportonly/P4T/HelpDesk_download

But if that ain't it, then I wonder what it does with the remaining 128MB ram, heh.

Here WinXP showing 1.87GB Ram, as where CPU-ID Shows 2GB:

Here CPU-ID's detailed CPU Mobo & Ram Info:

As parts go on what I am seeking is a SATA II Raid 5 Controller for max 4 drives, but it needs to be PCI 2.1 32 Bit.
So I don't know if that exists, need to do some research on that.

If I find anything I will keep you guys informed.

After some reboots the ram is now 1984MB over 1920MB, still 64MB away from 2048MB..

    Here the Bootup:

    Here the Bios:

Here from Windows showing 1.93GB instead of 1.87GB but still not 2.00GB.

It seems I can't seem to find our which this changes and I can't find anything that could fix this as well.

After running Everest Ultimate 5.5 x86, it detected that 1 of the 8 halves is 192MB while the other 7 are 256MB:

It may seem how this system works, I could refit the ram as well, but I dunno, CPU-ID does detect 4x 512MB.
So might be the AGP Aperture size of 64MB, there by sparing 64MB for the VGA card.

    Well I refitted the ram, and no change still 1984MB in Bios, AGP Aperture size is 64MB, so I think that is why;
1984MB + 64MB = 2048MB which the system is using, more Ican't really thing of, performance is dead stable as well.

Well I won't be flashing a new bios on the P4T rofl

Major thanks go to leevmeister for helping me out of that hell ride
Bios 1.007 made the system hang at bootup before the ram test, after I was able to get in the bios after a random amount of resets, the Bios read 64MB Ram

So I cleared CMOS didn't help, then I placed in the old ram and that booted just fine, 128MB Non-ECC + 256MB ECC & 128MB Non-ECC + 256MB ECC PC-800-45 16Bit and then the system booted normally..
That to which I didn't get, but still .. what the heck, talk about weirdness at it's weirdest

With that setup I was able to flash back and now 4x 512MB-40ns 18Bit works fine again with Bios 1.006 Beta 004.

No more flashing for my ASUS P4T haha, I panicked hard lol

Anyways my Ram is also 18Bit per 512MB so this could be why my Ram counts to 1984MB instead of 2048MB if using 16Bit ram sticks.
And now the system is rock solid once again

Well I bought a gem for this old P4 today and a very rare item as well

    ASUS V9999 GT AGP 256MB GDDR3 Rev. 1.01
    http://www.ebay.ie/itm/142299072094?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

This is the one of the best GeForce 6800 GT AGP 256MB's ever made and also one of the rarest to find, it took me 7+ years to find one
With this NV40 I want to see how well this system performs in games that have well optimized SSE2 Support

So by adding this NV40 in there that also allows it to run games that also support Shader Model 3.0 with OpenGL 2.0 & DirectX 9.0c API's.
This GPU will allow me to try out and test Primal Carnage Extinction running on the system @ 640x 480 x32, I really want to see if I even get a few fps, just for the fun of it

Stay tuned for lots more to come!

Yeah progress is a bit slow from this point as all the packages are now in transit, I will promise some fun tests in the following games:

    Far Cry
    Half-Life 2: Lost Coast
    Doom 3
    3D Mark 2001 SE
    Freelancer
Primal Carnage Extinction as fun extra.

Maybe some other things. That NV40 is a vital part to make these Shader Model 3.0 games to run without issues.
