What are the functional differences between the two versions?  Do I have to be logged into Steam for X1 to work?

I "believe" that the Steam X1 version is intended for those that only need it to game On Steam

I have Only used the standalone version

I hate any 'launcher' app..so there's my difference. I don't have to have steam? Not having it.

There are no functional differences..Yes you need Steam running or the Steam version of Precision will auto-open Steam if you run it by itself.

With the Steam version, you can also get achievements such as Coolbits (for overclocking your graphics card)..Setting the Curve (for setting a custom fan curve)..Max RPM's (for setting 100% fan speed)..Memory Madness (for overclocking memory by 300MHz or higher offset)..And some more, if that matters at all to you.

* Corsair Obsidian 450D Mid-Tower - Airflow Edition * ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC) * Intel i7-8700K @ 5.0 GHz * 16GB G.SKILL Trident Z 4133MHz * Sabrent Rocket 1TB M.2 SSD * WD Black 500 GB HDD * Seasonic M12 II 750W * Corsair H115i Elite Capellix 280mm * EVGA GTX 760 SC * Win7 Home/Win10 Home *

Agreed!  That's what I'm trying to avoid.

Again, to be avoided.  And no, I do not need achievements for just using my hardware.

Thanks for the responses!

Both work fine and with Steam I have just always had it installed so not a problem to use the steam version for me. I still do the stand alone though since I know when it's updated because of the forum but if I didn't want to keep up to date the Steam version would be better since it's always updated.
