Toys R Us is shutting down all UK and US stores. I remember how much fun it was to visit that place as a kid.

I don't even think kids play with toys any longer, they just play with phones/tablets and apps.

Hopefully things work out for the Canadian division. Looks like there is interest is purchasing it and keeping it open.

Used to go there, and it was a nice store. Sad to see them close down.

^ This. They stripped all the cash out of it they could, transferred the debt, and then shrugged their shoulders and walked away.

Sears will be following right behind Toy's R Us very soon.

    Toy's R Us (RIP)
    Sears (on it's death bed)
    K-Mart (on it's death bed)

I remember looking through Sears catalog (a freaking book) as kid during Christmas, in awe at all the stuff they sold. Sears was at it's best when they put the customer first.

It's weird how Target manages to stay alive but K-Mart continues to fail.

It seems like all of the wonderful stores of the past are going under. If you go into a Sears or K-Mart store you'll see the reasons they are failing.

I loved their Buy 2, get 1 Free sale on video games. Their selection of Lego sets was pretty nice, too. I should head by my local Toys R Us before theynshut down for good.

Yeah, it's more that people need a reason to go into a store now.  The retail locations that are doing well are those that have made themselves a destination/experience store (eg: Apple), those that specialize in merchandise that people need to see/feel first (think hardware stores), and those that provide just-in-time supplies of consumables (groceries, lumber, etc).  People just can't be bothered in sufficient numbers to fight lines, cramped aisles, and unpredictable supply of hot items, to go to a place like Toys'R'Us any more.

If you look around there are retail stores that are doing well and surviving. That is due to good management of the chain. To survive in this market your retail stores need internet sales and walk-in sales. You need good well organized stores with good personnel and low prices so that customers want to come back to your store. Walmart and Target are surviving because of this.

I kind of stand in the middle of your two opinions. I feel as it's a major mix of both. The ever trending & evolving world. What used to be interesting & fun to us, is no longer relevant in today's society. If it doesn't have a digital screen it's not "fun". It actually makes me sad in many ways, but not a lot we can do. @MSim I actually didn't know this about ToysRus, and I am sure it was a major contributing factor as well. We have 1 ToysRUs location about 25 miles north of where I live, everytime I've driven past it in the last 10 years it just looks like a mostly vacant parking lot, I remember going to that location as a child and that place was always crazy busy. But like others pointed out, their prices are simply too high to compete with Amazon or Wal*Mart. It's a surprise they survived as long as they did.

High prices can kill a business. I've seen that happen too many times even in Europe.

You can't do business like a dinosaur and expect to survive. The ones that are making it are the ones that have a strong on-line sales stream. You cannot have the massive overhead of a brick & mortar store, pay the heat, electricity, stock boys, sales people, cashier's, custodial services, security, building lease, and expect to go head to head with an on-line retailer who consolidates into massive distribution warehouses where sq.ft./sales ratios are incredible compared to traditional models. Sales $/sq.ft. $ ratio is where places like Amazon are really destroying everyone else.

Honestly I hate wasting the time and gas to go somewhere, find parking, go to a store and hope they have stock, wait in line, pay, then drive home. I just bought a tent on Amazon. Spent 5 minutes researching a good one and 1 minute to order it. Ordered Monday and arrived at my door today. Goodbye Toys R Us.

At least now he can rest, instead of rolling over in his grave over what they did to the company he founded.

As much as I hate to see it go as well, it was inevitable.  Retails are in a world of hurt thanks to the internet, powerhouses like Amazon and the likes.  You bring in the firm to squeeze the most you can get out of it and start gutting the place down.  Maybe they'll save a few stores in certain big cities but they were running it like it was a while back.

While we mourn the losses from the past and childhood memories, we are all being hypocritical and suspects for purchasing online and attacking a firm that was brought in to do the dirty work that no one else would do.

What ruined Toys R Us was selling out to a private equity firm. What did they think would happen to the company after doing that. The private equity firms made Toys R Us responsible for the loan they used to buy the company with.

If you don't change with times, it could come back and bite you.

Physical stores aren't helping either by harassing customers with credit card solicitation and other person information. For example best buy asks for a phone number when you buy something and I tell them no, then they give me a look like I'm crazy. Then you have stores that try to get you to contribute to "charity" when you're making a purchase. I pretty much hate shopping these days. From being carded for stupid stuff like compressed air to having to tell stores constantly that I don't want their dumb credit card.

I remember back when I was a kid at Toy r Us and even back then the shopping experience was garbage. They had a huge selection of video games, or so they portrayed, but you'd have to get a ticket for the game then go to the opposite side of the store to get an employee to see if they actually had it, which was a major pain, and typically they didn't have the games when their tickets claimed they did. Eventually I stopped even bothering because it was such a hassle and waste of time. Physical stores should excel in customer service and a good shopping experience, but that is rarely the case at all.

For tech goods lack of information on product packaging is something that stops me from purchases. I'll look for something I want to buy, pick the product up and look for basic information and not find it.

I heard someone else was replacing toysRus but I can't remember the name of what it was. I know it was like a throwback store.

Yep it is kind of sad, but the business has changed years later. Online retail is where it's at and most Toys R Us things you could buy on Amazon for less.
