So is Coffee Lake just a few weeks away, or go ahead and buy your new 7700K system now?

It's killing me to not buy a motherboard and CPU right now, but I know about watching new processors walk away from my Q6600 G0 @ 3.8GHz... When they were running at 3.8GHz too.
My chip could not keep up.

Coffee Lake's early info is that it's single threaded performance is about to improve...
If we get the 30% improvement that is being floated about on the net, that would be sweet.
Especially when trying to keep a GTX 1080 TI FTW3 happy.

I am waiting for 'The GOD of Monitors - ROG Swift PG27UQ' to be released.

Who knows if the info is true about Coffee Lake... Not me... but it does get my attention!
We can always use a faster CPU.

I did officially click buy on that keyboard too.
I also picked up a mouse pad: Reflex Lab Large Extended Gaming Mouse Pad Mat XXL, Stitched Edges, Waterproof, Ultra Thick 5mm, Wide & Long Mousepad 36”x12”x.20" Red

Yeah it will be interesting what the new 8700 hex core can do.. I wouldn't hold my breath on it getting to 5GHz nearly as easily as the 7700k though. There's always lots of rumors before release about how good a CPU is, but until it's out in the wild I take everything with a fairly good sized grain of salt lol, particularly when pre-release reviewers are being paid or supplied extra free gear to write a positive review..

Threadripper CPUs come out August 10th. Intel already started pricing cuts on its top tier chips. I would wait. Intel being forced to drop its prices is a win for everyone.

I hope Threadripper does put pressure on Intel. It does sound like a good CPU and I almost would jump on board..
I guess the issue for me is I don't believe AMD will match Intel on it's single threaded performance.
This is a gaming build after all...

The other thing that bothers me about the AMD platform is that I would bet real money that most software will be better supported on Intel.
More features will work, and less crashes. I could be wrong on this, but I do know Nvidia drivers are always better than ATI drivers IMO..

Question: If you were going to be running your rad in a push pull config, in the front of your case...
Do you put one fan on the outside of the case, then mount the RAD directly to the inside of the case, with the second set of fans on it's backside...
or do you mount the entire rig, RAD and 4 fans inside the case, with the RAD being mounted only to the fans?

Thanks!!

This is a difficult queation to answer, since I haven't seen the case personally. So I'll just give you the way on how to choose how you want to mount it. First check if you have enough space to have all the fans and the rad itself mounted inside the case and if there's enough clearance for a good airflow, if you're going to mount one fan outside.
If there's enough space to mount all the fans and rad inside, but not enough clearance for airflow to go in with one of the fans outside then do that. If it's the other way around, then, you guessed it, do it the other way around. And if there's no issue with both. Then look how you like it more, I would also check the temps with both ways. Basically it all depends on how good the airflow is in both cases.

I never usually mount rads infront of the case, since it's not really recommended. And 20/30 builds I had to do just this year, were hardline/soft tubing custom waterloop builds, I can't talk about AIO and smaller rads. Never used them, since the person who taught me to build told me that it isn't really recommended if you're doing these builds as a job(since custom waterloops give you more money, and people usually also call you to change the liquid, which you can charge them for).

Thanks for the post... I believe there will be enough room to have the entire rig inside the case if necessary....
I guess I wanted to know if there was a best answer. Sounds like I probably would be OK running it either way.

NP, I'd just recomend running some tests both ways then and check which has the best temps for your taste. Or just looks.
Can't choose for ya'. Tbh there's no better way in this case. Also, have you thought about Threadripper or nah?

Will do on the tests...

The more I hear about Thread Ripper, the weaker my resolve becomes to not just click buy on the 10th!!
But will it run games OK?  I know it will do everything else well.

This is getting exciting, my parts are starting to arrive!!

The single fastest GPU I have owned, is my GTX 280. My GTX 295 was actually 2 GPU's running in SLI, in one housing.

These are a few web pages that I have been looking at in wonder and awe...

I think after 9 years I was due for an upgrade.

I should be able to tell the difference in performance!!

I think it should run games just fine. Not top of the line fine, but good enough for 4k and even then with the extra cores you would multitask no issue. The whole issue with this, is that we need to know benchmarks on it before buying. I myself will wait for another year or so and see if Intel and AMD will think of something new in that time.
Although I really need a new workstation or upgrade the old one.

If Thread Ripper does well with benchmarks, I may just buckle and become a Ryzen guy this time around...
40 PCIE lanes...
Solder, no TIM like Intel...
I would be a 1900X guy.

It could happen. I would just send my Rad back to EVGA unopened, and buy a different cooling solution for Thread Ripper from them...
Heck, might even get my motherboard from them too?

My first thought when I woke up this AM was, I need a Motherboard and CPU!

That's worse option, same as i7-7800X or i7-7820X compare to i7-6900K. Intel give nothing to owners of i7-6900K and i7-6950X.
8 core Skylake is downgrade compare to Broadwell with 8 cores, thermal paste, less PCI-E lanes, just little better but who knows how much if you compare them on same clock.
Because Intel sell 8C/16T for 599$ with probably much better gaming performance than AMD.
AMD power is to beat i9-7900X for 750$ and to amazing Cinebench performance over 3100 points with 1950X.
1900X should be avoided because you can buy Skylake-X with same number of cores.

Good post... Thanks!
You moved me back over to the Intel camp!
So I guess I am back to a 7700K, or if I can stand waiting, a 8700K providing it reviews well...

Tbh, It's the same thing both ways. There are no games that would abuse so many cores. Not this year, and unlikely in the next. But who knows about after that. It might turn out that games will start using cores more than the gpu.
I'd buy the lowest i9 or threadripper and wait what comes in the near future.
You can always sell them afterwards and buy a better version for that money anyway.
I myself will stick with the 7700k I have right now. And see if the prices fall or they'll think of something even better.

Take a look at the EVGA CLC 280 CPU cooler, it's excellent.

I've heard the Aquacomputer m.2 cooler works well. I had one of the ASUS 3D printed mounts made for a m.2 cooler fan (for the Hero) - it works great. There isn't one for the Code because of the armor:

FYI, I used a Fractal Design Silent Series R3 40mm Silence Optimized fan [link] for the m.2 cooler.

Hey Talon, your choice of case intrigues me, what made you go for that case? The rest of your build is really nice and will def have some staying power for a few years.

Yes, I broke... I decided that I am just building a gaming rig, and not a Mainframe.
Figured the 4 fast cores will serve me best.

Welcome to the Republic Talonman. You picked a good Z270 mobo to go with.

It's hard to beat ASUS ROG Maximus IX Hero mobo. That mobo comes with some nice premium features, nice build quality at a good price.

My RED M.2 3D printed bracket arrived today. (It looks sweet!)
I went to mount my fan and realized that I don't have the 2 tiny screws ready to go.
Were there some in the fans box that I misplaced?
Where did you get the 2 tiny screws to mount your fan?

Thanks!

Did you check the mobo box?  I believe mine came with the screws for the 3D mount spot.
