What is the real story? Between amd and nvidia based top end gpus? For 1080, 1440, and 4000?

Tons of reviews out there for the 3080, 3090, and 6800/6800xt. Zero for the 6900xt because it releases December 8th.

Ray tracing wise, the AMD ones are slacking.. while the NVIDIA ones are thriving.

It's a matter of, competition between the companies and benefits for you as Driver updates and soon Smart Access memory from NVIDIA will matter at the end of the day.

Half your answer requires we also know what CPU you have...some of the AMD features don't work on intel.

Looks like 6800 XT is giving the 3080 a good competition. The former comes with 16 GB, the speed is irrelevant since it is performing at the same level with slower vram, but, having more is beneficial in the long run. If I were in that market I would go for 6800XT, as long as RT and DLSS isn't a thing for you. 6900XT is yet to be seen, but, if it performs well relative to the 3090 then the 500 dollar difference could work to AMDs advantage, again I don't think it'll be any good at RT etc.

I want a future proof rig but am unsure how vital RT will be in 5 years time. I do believe we will need more than 10 GB sooner than later.

This is more an opinion than an informed post. Looking forward to seeing what others think. Cheers!

P.S: AMD stock seems way worse than Nvidia, so how soon you want it may be a factor.

I'm curious since the next gen consoles are using AMD architecture.  I can see AMD making some strides.
