I’ve been using this card for roughly a year. This evening my pc completely shut down without warning. Upon restarting I noticed smoke coming out of the graphics card along with the smell of burnt electronics.

As this card was an RMA replacement for my old 980ti the continued warranty has ran out. It’s hard to tell without taking off the back plate but I suspect this could be the VRMs burnt out. Does anyone know if the FTW2 icx model suffered from the thermal pad issue?

And I guess the most important thing. Even though my warranty is technically out of date. Would EVGA honour it if this is the cause?

Thanks

The biggest question is probably going to be, How far out of date?

In the end, it is best to speak with EVGA and see what they say.

I thought they started using fuses that could be replaced on 10 series cards

(Safety fuse to protect components from damage due to improper installation or other component failures)
    Taken from product specs

Could be that simple and what caused smoke

I have seen fuses fix $5 down radios to $250000 cars they save a lot stuff from truly burning up

We've had this discussion already in the past and have agreed, with conclusive evidence, that the safety fuse is designed to prevent shocking displays of fire and smoke, not prevent death of the card.  If the safety fuse blew, the card is already dead.  The safety fuse won't fail until after the card is already toast.  The card turns into toast, then the safety fuse melts.

Best case scenario, the VRM power stage/MOSFET fried but didn't damage the PCB or any other components.  Best case scenario, the user replaces the VRM power stage/MOSFET and safety fuse (if necessary), and the card works again.  More than likely though, the PCB is damaged and the core received excessive voltage when the VRM power stage/MOSTFET failed, and the core is cooked.
