https://www.cnbc.com/2022/07/27/china-competitiveness-computer-chip-bill-passes-senate-goes-to-house.html "Key Points: - The Senate passed bipartisan legislation aimed to help the U.S. compete with China by injecting tens of billions of dollars into the domestic production of semiconductors.
- The bill will now head to the House, where lawmakers hope to pass it and send it to the White House for President Joe Biden’s signature before Congress leaves town.
- The package includes more than $52 billion for U.S. companies producing computer chips, as well as a tax credit for investment in chip manufacturing. It also provides funding to spur the innovation and development of other U.S. technologies."
Thoughts: This bill is long overdue and should have been passed in the 90's. But glad to see bipartisan support behind this bill, hopefully it gets approved by the House quickly.

Will this help our chip production compete, or will it help our chip production become complacent and no longer self-reliant? I think this is a good idea in general, but the tariffs were supposed to do the same thing, yet I see little progress. There are lots of companies hiring in the semiconductor manufacturing business, but few interested in the work. I'm worried that companies will take as much money as they can regardless of their intent to use it effectively and wisely. I hope it won't be yet another failed subsidy cash grab.

Update: Sounds like it passed the House and is on its way to the presidents desk to sign. ty_ger07 I think this is a good idea in general, but the tariffs were supposed to do the same thing, yet I see little progress.
Not quite sure what you mean, but I feel like the tariffs served their purpose for the time being and gave the necessary push to make this happen. We lost all those semi conductor jobs and MFG in the 80s/90s due to cheap labor, but with advanced automation and robotics, cheap labor isn't as big of a factor. Add in logistics costs from Asia and technology theft and it make the need for building out our own fabs a no brainer. Why outsource this and add more margin % that we ultimately have to pay more for. ty_ger07 There are lots of companies hiring in the semiconductor manufacturing business, but few interested in the work.
School's haven't been pushing kids to go into these fields since all the jobs moved overseas and our STEM programs have become stagnant here in the US. This will be a great opportunity for the next generation, like what happened with the automobile industry at the turn of the century or other industrial revolution industries. ty_ger07 I'm worried that companies will take as much money as they can regardless of their intent to use it effectively and wisely. I hope it won't be yet another failed subsidy cash grab.
Always a valid concern when the Gov't wants to spend *your* money, I can agree here, so hopefully we will get some oversight. But the need for computers is just growing so many generations will benefit from this investment long term.

The tariffs raised were supposed to go into government programs to fund growth here. Where was it spent? I haven't seen much progress during the past 2 years. Maybe I just don't know. I think it was a good idea, in principle. I just don't know if it had proper oversight. But maybe I just don't know.

Hoggle I guess $54 billion is better than nothing but keep in mind these factories cost like $7 billion to build. What it's like inside a $7 billion Intel fab - CNET
Sure, but you know AMD isn't going to see any of this money. The vast majority of it is going to Intel, though Samsung is trying to claim some of it for its Austin expansion plans.

AMD will benefit from an increased number of foundries domestically and there being more options locally in regards to shopping for silicon.
