Hi,
I have two EVGA 1080 FTW2 card in SLI and an Asus Z170-WS motherboard. I have been doing well with verious bios releases over the last couple years. Never had a problem before however 6 months ago I tried updating to the 3002 bios release and had an issue where I did not have video on the screen until I removed my second Evga 1080 FTW2 from the PCIEX16_3 slot and then I have video. At the time I thought it was a problem with the bios so I rolled back to 900 version.  Then recently Asus finally released ver 3105 bios release and after flashing I had the same issue. This time I tried connecting my video cable to the second GPU and surprised to find I had picture on the screen. I even tried to set the primary Gpu in the BOOT section of bios video card information section to the first pcie x16 slot but that didn't work either. I mean it still works just got to use the second Gpu for video output instead.

Not sure whats going on here. Is there a problem with the video cards?

Thanks

Clearly a bios issue if going back to bios 900 puts everything back to normal.

After flashing the BIOS, have you done a complete power off BIOS reset? I've have seen cases where the system fails to enumerate hardware correctly after flashing a BIOS or changing AIB peripherals.  Are you using a BIOS preset (for an overclock for example) that you created with a different BIOS version? That can also cause issues.

Thanks. That’s a good idea. I’ll try a reset of the cmos for kicks. Thanks.

This is a question for the general hardware section as it is an Asus Motherboard. A mod will move it when they have the time.

Resetting cmos jumper didn't do a thing!

    Thanks Asus!

Time to go back to bios 900 unless you're fine with how it is now.

Well it would be a real pain to go back to 900 cause it was a custom modded bios that had updated raid roms and such, and would need flashback procedure to get it back up. Anyhow I'm fine with way it is now.  So its the second GPU no big deal.  I even tried to update the GOP driver on the cards. No difference. Doubt Asus is going to update the bios one more time.  They really needs to get its act together. If it was an EVGA or Asrock board I doubt this stuff would have gotten by them.

    Thanks

I have an ASUS Z170 Deluxe and the first couple of bios 3*** updates for it were crap. Could not get a stable overclock on 6700k what so ever, couldn't get ram to run at its 2666mhz speed. There were numerous nuance issues such as yours, bsods being the worst. Flashback to

previous bios of 1902 and got my system back to its rock solid settings. I've been to leery to try their latest bios update since I haven't had a single issue, bsod since.

situations like this are usually resolved by doing a cmos battery pull with the system powered off.

Did you try swapping the cards around? Put the 2nd card in the first slot?

I may have like 6 months ago when this first happened with the 3002 bios release. Don't remember and doubt that would fix it but its worth a try.
Don't really have the time though. I did try updating the GOP firmware driver version from 300007 to 30000A and so each card is identacle so
I doubt swapping them will do anything. I swear Asus tech support is so dumb. I wrote a detailed account of what happened and they responded
saying 'oh so your card still isn't working after bios update'. Thought Asus would have better tech support.

    Thanks

I’m sorry.... but what ever gave you that idea? The horror stories about Asus tech support and terrible RMA habits are running rampant across the internet, lol. They are horrible.

Also, there remote (not in the main office) assistants aren’t part of the development team, so expect someone that owns a dell laptop and no Asus products to be your assistant.. basically, they have no clue what is going on. These people work from home, and have zero communication with the people that can make a difference.

Overclock.net was the best place i found to get ahold of Asus reps that actually work with the hardware and development teams. You just have to get their attention in the Asus specific forum.

Atleast Asus boards could resume from standby with kepler+ boards.

Just wanted to update this thread and mark it as SOLVED!

After updating the GOP firmware on each card to the latest 3000B GOP now I can boot or post from the primary card! In fact I had completely forgotten that I had attempted to update the GOP of each card to 3000A months ago because one of the cards was still on 30007! So I thought that maybe because the GOPs differed was the cause because apparently I had only updated just one card. It could still be that the root of the cause was different gop versions and that the motherboard was selecting the most recent one perhaps or it could be that the older gop drivers had issues on displayport which Nvidia recently fixed!

I'm going to say it was probably the Displayport bug that was the problem here!

    Glad its fixed.

Now time for a new motherboard! Lol!

I had a problem with the RGB lighting on my ASUS board and it took about ten days but the support forum finally found a solution. It was an old piece of ASUS software that didn’t get updated. Luckily until it was fixed the RGB worked I just couldn’t change it. One of the advice support has was to uninstall my motherboard and disconnect the RGB power plug off the motherboard and then plug it back in but I personally wouldn’t have gone through that much trouble.

Well Asus engineers better get a clue as this proves theres a bug in their bios code.
