I purchased 13 EVGA X299 FTW K motherboards for use as workstations in my office two of them burned out in the identical location.
In both cases an internal layer burned through the edge of the board scorching the M.2 SSDs.
The short caused the power supplies to rapidly cycle on and off.
The Samsung 960 M.2s were singed but otherwise okay and no data was lost.
In both cases the 4TB Seagate HDDs were dead and all data was lost, probably due to the PS cycling.
The only thing connecter to the computer USB ports was a keyboard and mouse.
Three case fans were connected to the MB.
Corsair H115i and the radiator fans were receiving power from a SATA power connector.

Have you contacted EVGA directly ?  https://www.evga.com/about/contactus/

    Started an RMA ?

Maybe remove MB and look for indication of a short from backside of MB to case or standoff ?

I would replace the power supplies as well. The manufacturer of the motherboard (evga) and the power supply company should both fully understand wanting to exchange bad products. I would exchange the psu just in case it pushed a little too much power and possibly caused the issue. It couldn't hurt , especially if the manufacturer replaces it for you.

How long did you have the motherboards?

Standoffs are fine, no loose parts, all cables were run behind MB tray, cooler not leaking.
The machine was placed into service about 30 days ago.

In addition to the 13 I just built I have five EVGA X99 FTW Ks also mounted in Corsair 760T cases with no problems. Those machines are using H110I coolers.

The first board is due to be delivered to EVGA RMA 30 May, the second hasn’t been shipped out yet.

The 0750 G3 power supply in one of the machines failed about three weeks ago the replacement unit was new.

I can say that I have not personally seen this type of failure on any motherboard before, including any EVGA X299.
There are two points that I find interesting in your original post. One is you mention the failure of a HDD powered by SATA power. PS cycling should not be enough to cause drive failure, that is usually only the case with SATA overload (too many devices on one cable), or cables that are not wired correctly for that modular unit.
The only traces in that section of the motherboard would be for those lower connectors. Secondly, I see that you have the USB header connected to the H115i (shown on the right of the first burn image), and you mention that the H115i is also being powered by SATA power. Can you confirm that every SATA power cable (and all the PSU cables for that matter) have a "G3" branding on the connectors? Incorrectly wired SATA cables could cause these types of failures.

...an untrammeled flow of words in an open forum.

The computer had one HDD one M.2 and one optical drive.

I used three separate SATA power cables; one for the H110i, one for the HDD and one for the Optical drive.

I also used both CPU power cables as well as the VGA power cable for the 1060.

Yes all the cables are marked G3.

Both HDDs are unresponsive I tested them on an Image MASSter ™Solo-4.

The USB does not power the H115i it is only needed for the Corsair Link software.

I have not tested the power supplies from either of the failed PC’s.

Do the power connectors (all of them) have any "burned" or "molten" signs? There were cases were original PSU cables or also CableMod cables/extensions were too "weak" on the diameter of the wire and got too hot when the system drew a lot of power. Doesn't happen often, but can happen.

Both workstations have been in operation for at least 30 days on both occasions the event happened when the computers were being started at the beginning of the workday.

    There are no burnt connectors.

I did not use any type of power cable adapters no Molex or mini Molex.

There were three 140 mm (three wire) fans connected to the SYS1_FAN, PWR_FAN, CHA_FAN headers.  I tested the fans using the G3’s Power On Self Tester and the case fan controller.

The USB ports have over current protection.

The boards were purchased in March 2018

I RMA’d the both of the Supernova 0750 G3 PSUs, according to the RMA department they both failed “crashed under load”.  One of the PSU’s was an RMA replacement.

The first motherboard I returned was initially rejected by the RMA department because of the damaged PCB, but they did eventually agree to honor the warranty.

The second motherboard was rejected by the RMA department because of bent pins in the CPU socket.  The workstation that board was installed was in operation for 30 days before the PCB failed.  Still working with the RMA department on this one.

Just added an Intel i7-7820X to the list of parts destroyed by the defective PSU’s that bring the grand total up to $1250.00.
    1 Intel i7-7820X $569.99
    1 EVGA X299 motherboard $329.99
    2 Seagate Barracuda 4 TB $189.98
    1 Seagate External $149.99

EVGA refused to warranty the second motherboard, and tech support has been useless.
One of the CPUs were also destroyed still waiting on Intel RMA.
I been a customer since 2010 have two elite accounts I’m done with this company.

I currently have a x299 ftw k on the way, however it looks like i will be returning it at this stage. I was hoping EVGA would have provided some further clarification on this issue after receiving your first board and performing analysis. However I cannot and will not risk an $1800 cpu in this board if this is the state of information we are left with.

Any motherboard manufacturer is going to deny an RMA if you have bent CPU pins but that is unfortunate you haven't had much luck on the tech support side.  Two burning out in the same spot is however very suspect and despite the nice sale prices these boards have got going on, I think these serves as a warning for anybody looking.

EVGA confirmed that both motherboard failures were caused by defective Supernova 0750 G3 power supplies. One of the power supplies was an RMA replacement.

Pins weren’t bent when the board left my office, it was mishandled by EVGA. The EVGA acknowledged the bent pins were inconsequential to the failure not that it mattered the board was unsalvageable.

Never said you were an amateur, just stating any vendor is going to deny the RMA for bent pins. Outside of taking photos of the pins and time stamping with a signature in the photo which I've done in the past because a different motherboard vendor claimed the same issue. I used that photo as proof and they were silent for a few days then came back and stated they'd honor it. To this day I'll never buy one of their products again.

I will say if they confirmed both boards failures were caused by the defective CPU that should be the sole reason for the replacement and bent pins regardless would not have been the cause for the failure.

so over voltage  from a bad  multi-voltage power supply can cause an electric arc on a motherboard.

Do you know if the problem was in the main power supply cable to the motherboard ?
I keep a tester around to double check the readings on that cable.

it is too bad that now a days it is easier ( less cost )  to just send a new item and not always look at what happened to the damaged item.

If the power supply was a third party it would take forever to get money back.

Would second some of the opinions regarding PSU. Not saying your FTW was not faulty, but there are several potential culprits. 2 DOA mb in a row from a very good quality company like EVGA is very unlikely.

If you had to pick one component in a system to buy the absolute best $$$ can buy - the PSU is it.

Always get Titanium 80+ rated. Just no reason to take a chance with a component that can literally fry your entire system.

I used to mine. Now I compute.

Intel screw up with X299. I don't say that's bad platform. It's great but it's too overpriced and they were surprised by AMD and decide to push processors at least 500W than planned, to launch platform earlier and cause a lot of problems to everyone. Who knows how much overclocked processors drained, close to 300W for sure.
Recommendation for you is 1000 P2. And recommendation for other guys Clean supply of 1000 P2 and 1200 P2 PSU.
1000 P2 now have full black cables and connectors, that's new revision. But that' change nothing, everything is in platform. And they are reliable.
