TechPowerUp - Samsung 980 PRO SSD Finally Gets a Stock Heatsink Option

“Samsung's flagship client M.2 NVMe SSD, the 980 PRO, finally has a stock heatsink in new SKUs. Its design calls for what appears to be an aluminium monoblock with ridges for fins that join at the top. This heatsink is held in place by a metal shroud that covers the sides and back of the drive. The drive comes with its own retail SKUs and name—"980 PRO with Heatsink," much like how Western Digital segregates SKUs with or without heatsinks for its flagship WD Black SN850 drives. Retail channel availability of these variants remains to be seen, as The Verge reports that these drives will be sold as PlayStation 5-compatible drives. When they come out on October 29, the 1 TB variant is expected to be priced at $250, with the 2 TB variant going for $450.”

My thoughts:  The heatsinks are not objectionable, but the price is.  The 2TB goes for $360.57, Amazon, sans the heat sink.  This just may be Samsung pricing and hopefully marketing pricing will be lower.

Not sure if this is good news or bad. The good, no aftermarket solution needed like a motherboard that doesn't includes it. The bad, It may be required and most motherboard have a cooling solution that may or may not be sufficient and will need to be discarded.  Maybe it just me but most mobo's I'm attracted to have a M.2  heat sink incorporated in the design of the board. Of course they come at a premium so discarding a piece of it to make way seems unlikely and removing the factory HS likely. I wonder if they will sell it both ways with and without HS?

Yes, the 2TB 980 Pro with no heat sink, as mentioned, is on Amazon for $360.57 and the 1TP is $189.99.  The heat sink is a new thing for the 980 Pro.

$90 for a free or below $10 item. No mark-up there.

I think that this is aimed at the console market.

At least it's not one of those gaudy looking heatsinks I've seen on some NVMe drives.
