The S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Stalker) series is a PC classic, sitting amongst legendary titles like Crysis thanks to its impressive visuals and unique gameplay. Now, Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl is due to receive a remaster, not from GSC Game World, but a modder called Strelokkkkk over on Moddb.

Over the years, Stalker's X-Ray engine has proven to be incredibly moddable, enabling a large number of fan creations. This is what has helped keep the game alive for well over a decade. Now, Strelokkkkk plans to upgrade the game with DirectX 11 support, new features like tessellated models and advanced features like ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination through SSRTGI (Screen-Space Ray Traced Global Illumination).

At this time, STALKER's remaster mod has no firm release date, but know that we are following the mod's development with interest.

This is going to be fun if it comes to fruition.

I always find it mildly entertaining when the modding community fights for relevance on a title a dev couldn't bother to. It never works out. Well I guess it does, for a few hundred people who find the mod and whatever convoluted steps it takes to install it. I suppose at least it's not a Redux re-release where the dev tries to sell the whole game again at new prices to those who already own it.

I don't mind a redux release if it's a good improvement. As for this mod I wonder if it will ever see the light of day. I think the only chance it has would be if the publisher is interested in it and using it as a redux. Looking at the Facebook page though it seems like the developer doesn't mind the mod community.

    DX11 and Raytracing? Isn't that a DX12 feature?

Yes, one way to implement it is as a DX12 feature. But it doesn't require DX12 to ray trace. Ray tracing existed decades ago; before DX12 existed.
