I'm sure this has been posted somewhere on here but i thought i would ask anyway.

So SLIed GTX 460 or 1 GTX 470 superclock which would yield better performance (assuming the game supports SLI)

Also any have any idea when Evga will be selling the GTX 470 Superclocked+ with the back plate and bracket all it says is notify me.

Sorry again if someone has already posted this.

since the 460's in SLI beat the 480 without OC'ing, I'm pretty sure sure the 460s will be better, but you can only sli 2, so the 470 might be a little more future proof if you ever want to upgrade

as long as your comfortable with the extra heat and power consumption
i probably would have went for the 470( 2 if my PSU would handle them) but during the summer i realized how much hotter my computer made my room, its nice having performance and a cooler room

but either way you cant really lose!

I switched from one 470 to two 460's and the increase is roughly 33% in most apps.  I went from a Vantage score of 24.5k with the 470 all the way up to 32k with the 460's (the 470 at 830mhz IIRC and both 460's at 850mhz).

high benches are nice and all but how is it gaming? Extra heat is ok im building this inside a HAF-X putting in 4x 200mm fans front top and side using a H70 CPU cooler installing a 120mm in the bracket to blow over the vid card and force the hot air out the back of the case.

I doubt you'll have much of a heat issue with that rig; no matter which cards you choose.  I have 2 x 470s and I love them to death.  I have several friends with 2 x 460s and they are very happy with their choices as well.

Gaming performance is great.  My Crysis benchmark score went from 48fps on very high IQ 4xaa to over 72fps on the same settings.  Mafia 2 beched at over 100fps maxed without physx.  Runs about 55fps with physx on.  All games I play are smooth with little to no SLI stuttering.  Heat and noise are a bit of a concern with the EE 460's though.  To help remedy the problem, I replaced the TIM with some high quality stuff and bought a set of single slot brackets for less exhaust restriction.  My cards used to peak above 85c stock and now they never break 70c after the mods (one peaks around 68-69 while the other is around 63-64).  I use 65% fan speed for everyday usage.  Anything higher than that is quite noticeable.

i am not sure how high a gtx 470 can be overclocked on air without sounding like a tornado at idle.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. SLI 460s vs the 470SC+. On one hand, the 470 has a backplate - something that I've always wanted on my video card, and it comes with Mafia 2 for free. On the other, the 460s perform much better, and it would be cheaper for me in the long run. I can get two 460s with my EVGA bucks for $407, but a 470 now plus a second later if I needed it would be $607, plus another $150 or so for a higher tier PSU. I do really want that 470, but I think that in the end, I'll be more sensible and save my cash and just go for 460s.

Can you post a link to your SLi GTX 460 Vantage score?

I've been reading through posts it seems the only way i would even get the full potential of the 470 would be to have a 980x or better so would i be better off with SLI GTX 460 SCs with the i7 950?

It was on a review somewhere but doesnt matter at the moment i wasn't trying to state it as a fact just saying i saw it.  I think im going to do the SLI 460 SCs.  I could do a single 470 SC now and buy a second later but im not sure about having 2 heat monsters in my case.  Also im thinking my FPS may be higher with the SLI 460s. Any thoughts?

There's the Bench feature over at Anandtech that'll give you a quick overview of 460 1GB SLI v. 470 frame rates.

Thanks for the link sleepee.  At this point im not sure ill watch prices i guess for the next month if the 470 superclocked+ magically appears on sale here or @ newegg ill grab one.  If not im going 460 GTX SC in SLI.  From all im reading its quieter performs better than a single 470 and less heat. I know i could save up for a second GTX 470 but if i change my mind down the road theres always the step up program. Not to mention the power draw of SLI 470s is higher. Not that i care about my eletric bill but i do care about my power supply dying a early death.  But yea ill watch prices if the 470s come down ill grab 2 if they stay the same ill get 2 460s give it a try worst case i register and step up to 470s instead.

Here's a picture of a Vantage run at 850, 1700, 1040 (I'm actually not sure how to link to the score itself because I've never done it).  My best Vantage run with my 470 was 24,500 exactly.

On far cry 2 benchmark my fps was roughly double that of a single 470

We had the exact same setting as we were on teamspeak while testing

Well ive done a bit of thinking and looking around since the 470 backplate and high flow bracket are out of stock or missing in action at the moment ive decided that ill just get 2x GTX 470s for SLI later on ill buy the bracket and backplate install them maybe bump the clocks up a bit.  Hopefully with a 200mm fan and 120mm fan blowing on them it will keep the heat down if not come summer i may have to invest in some liquid cooling. Thanks everyone for the input much appreciated. As always you guys are great these forums have been the best source of info i have found.
