SK Hynix has today posted an update on their blog about the upcoming DDR5 memory, which they have developed in co-respondence with JEDEC's progression of the standard. They have noted a few key things, among which some of the most interesting are features like the maximum speed of 8400 MHz. The DDR5 standard is very flexible, allowing manufacturers to release their chips with frequencies ranging anywhere from 3200-8400 MHz. While the lowest speed is 3200 MHz, manufacturers are starting with 4800 MHz chips and building their way up from there. The minimum density of a single DDR5 die is 8 Gb, while the maximum is 64 Gb, quadrupling the maximum capacity of DDR4 dies.

Perhaps one of the biggest changes besides capacity and speed improvements is the addition of Error-Correcting Code (ECC) support for memory. This feature is now not exclusive to special dies, like with DDR4, but rather is built inside every die. The DDR5 memory chips use 32 banks, split into 8 bank groups, which is designed to provide as much bandwidth as possible. Burst Lenght is doubled to 16, compared to 8 of DDR4, so memory access availability is better. Operating Voltage is decreased to 1.1 V, from the previous 1.2 V of DDR4, resulting in an overall decrease of 20% of power consumption. The mass production of SK-Hynix's DDR5 chips will start this year, however, timing is unknown.

In my opinion full production will be next year. No doubt AMD will change the CPU socket for next year's CPUs to accommodate this new memory.

Many people wait DDR5 with a lot of expectations.
Not for RAM specifically, but they expect to Intel catch AMD with some of newer platforms.
Intel can't gave up from high prices, but soon they will profit more from Intel NUC then desktop platform.
For less then 2 years Intel could face with similar situation as AMD after fail of Bulldozer.

I didn't want to invest any more in new hardware before breakthrough on hardware field.
It was pointless, I spent more time searching what is 10% faster then playing games.
Now after this Covid-19 situation everything will change, I will upgrade hardware only after real innovations.
DDR3-DDR4-DDR5. New generation of RAM is not such big deal, but it's more period when new RAM show up, in mean time we have several new generations of CPU, Chipsets and Graphic cards. Ignoring them before new RAM show up is smart thing for people who are not rich.

Industry of production equipment for survival will profit a lot.
I don't talk about brainwashed childish preppers for Zombie apocalypse who buy 10 different machetes, tomahawks, knives, etc... to kill dead people.
If death people get up I doubt killing brain will stop them.
I talk about real equipment produced for soldiers, military, everything what could help you to distance from population and survive 30m on three in tent 3 months if need.

I want to build one more E-ATX PC in Lian Li PC-O11 WXC with DDR5 memory before I switch to Barebone Mini Motherboards with build In CPU and GPU after 2025.
