I've had the SC-17 for a couple months and am still very happy with it, especially the keyboard and display quality. I game occasionally, but the primary purpose of the laptop is a desktop replacement, primarily for working with text. Can anyone recommend some peripheral options for setting up a docking station for longer work sessions?

Especially:
- Cooling pad/USB hub. (I printed a couple small spacers to lift the laptop up off the desk and noticed an immediate increase in airflow.)
- Monitor. In a perfect world I'd have a monitor that sits nicely next to the laptop screen, which probably forces an external keyboard for ergonomics.
- Keyboard and mouse. (I ordered way in advance, but through Xotic PC, who I guess didn't get any of the fancy mouse bundles with the SC-17)

Since the SC-17 doesn't have a dedicated docking station connector, I guess the minimum I can get away with is plugging one USB port into a hub, and the second monitor into the displayport?

I'm especially interested in any advice on choosing a cooling pad and whether it would be expected to help much. I notice that parts of the aluminum case really heat up during gaming. This is encouraging; that maybe the whole case is an effective heat sink and increasing convective cooling could lengthen its lifespan.

There are a variety of laptop cooling pads available although I have never used one and can't recommend any one in particular. Just find the right size and pay attention to the reviews:

Today I received the Cooler Master one linked below and have been using it for a few hours. So far there's a noticeable difference in how hot the laptop gets under load.

That's a nice little unit. Cooler Master is a good company too. I only use my laptop for my home security system these days but it gets so hot on the bottom I need to flip it up and have it rest on the screen while the bottom hovers in the air while I am gone. I like that next one over in the list with the 200 mm fan too, I think 200 mm but it was big anyway, except the price was way high like $64.99.

I'm really liking this one from Cooler Master, but it's really hard to find...seems discontinued? But it's the best one they have, measured in CFM.

Any others out there for this beast that you've tried?

I'm also looking for a cooling pad, putting a book under my laptop whilst gaming improves the temps by around 10 degrees. I have been looking at several different ones what do you guys think will be the most suitable?

best looking one but i read the fans are useless and i am worried it would be no better than having no stand

The ones you list mostly seem a bit small.
Make sure the one you get says it supports laptops with a 17"+ screen. Plus, I've heard that considering how heavy the SC-17 is, some pads may not be able to handle it when you tilt the laptop using the pad.
    Still on the search myself.

I tested a bunch of them out but none of them made a big different, what did make a difference was putting a book underneath my laptop which allowed more airflow to get to the intakes. I have bought a coolermaster notepal U3 just to elevate the laptop and allow more airflow to get through to the intakes from the grilled surface of the cooler. I havn't tested this cooler out yet though. Have you had any luck with them?

Easiest way to make a laptop cooler is to place it on a laptop cooler

I use this:  Cooler Master NotePal X3

I have the SC17 and bought both fans produced by 1ST Player. One is a traditional cooling pad, the other is more like a fan with feet. Either way, the SC17 fits comfortably on both. I wanted to be able to use the machine while laying in bed. Both of those fans pull their air from behind the device (there are a couple vids on YT that show how they work). I also use the fan when I game and turn the superclock feature on. I haven't taken specs, but the device doesn't get as crazy hot after an hour session. It's still hot, even with the internal fans boosted, but you can actually touch the keyboard when the cooling pad has been on. I still don't use the laptop's keyboard for gaming even with the fans; it is way too hot during gaming.

I failed to mention that I absolutely love the computer. When I am doing normal productivity tasks, the fans rarely turn on and the machine isn't hot at all and stays fairly quiet. The pad is really only necessary for gaming, but it only helps a little. I use the pad in bed so that I can prop up the computer, but I don't usually turn it on. Hope that helps.

    Yeah, the SC-17 rocks it!
So, I was looking at the Notepal X3. The 1st Player I've never heard of before.

Cool GTX & demogis, have either of you done comparisons during superclock gaming with vs. without the cooling pad? During superclock, my CPU seems to really be getting close to maxxed out in the temp dept. So much so that I rarely use superclock anymore.

There doesn't seem to be a cooling pad out there configured to actually draw air from the bottom. They all seem to push air from the bottom.

I have been using the laptop sat on a desk without any cooling pads, connected to an external monitor and i've done 6 hour gaming sessions and the laptop ran them fine. It really is a top quality piece of kit

I will setup the Notepal U3 cooler soon and i will report back with temps, how do i activate the superclocked feature?
