Hi all,

We have looked into this, and the issue is a hardware limitation offered by the controller. In fact, all boards that use the current Marvell SATA 6G controller will run at similar speeds in RAID 0 with high performance SSD’s. One alternative to have faster results is to use a PCI-E add in card.

This limitation will be very much like onboard graphics and discreet graphics. Also, the next generation of Marvell controllers are coming out next year and hopefully the bottleneck can be overcome. At the moment, the current Marvell SATA 6G controller is the best solution to squeeze into a small footprint.

Thanks,
Jacob

So is it worth using a single drive with this controller?

Single drive should be fine, it is primarily in RAID mode where you may hit the bottleneck.

but you also have issues with pci-e cards do you not, i know mine doesn't work and hasn't for months, not much of an alternative

Is it the PCIe card in your sig? We are aware of some compatibility issues with specific controllers, sometimes memory low gap can help, otherwise we are looking out how to increase the option rom space to improve compatibility.

Jacob,
Any idea why i got 2 separate errors when updating?
Got a physical media error then flash utility loaded then i got a BIOS header different error but it all flashed windows forced me to reboot 2x times though
also on my Marvell controller screen its labelled as 1.0.0.1027?

Lt me check.

it's the LSI card in my sig yes, and from all accounts it boils down to the lack of option rom space in the evga bios, correct

That's good to know considering I bought a 600GB SATA III Velociraptor a few days ago!

Jacob any update on the issue i posted?

I tried my SATA III raptor on the marvell controller wasnt any noticable difference between the SATA II and III as far as i could tell but maybe i need to wait and run a RAID 0 setup to notice anything.

Probably should just pick up a SSD for my OS later on i guess.

Am I dreaming? I swore I saw an in depth guide on how to install the marvell drivers during Win 7 installation. I was gonna print it. Now I can't find it. Where did it go?

We looked into it, but not sure at the moment what is causing the error, we cannot reproduce the error on our test systems. Will keep looking.

Well let me know jacob im not using the controller at the moment anyway didn't see much of a gain over the SATA II in AHCI mode probably because its  mechanical drive.  Im thinking maybe the errors came from the CDs themselves probably had a scratch on it somewhere who knows.  I may try to do the USB method at some point or just buy new discs.

I think I got a problem, my Marvell Controler is set in IDE mode.
Is it possible to change to AHCI ?  I know the registry procedure to move to AHCI, but I can find any option in the controler setup to modify it.  Look :

the OCZ ssd you are using is not a sata lll drive so why are you trying to get it to run a crappy marvelle controller, you will get much better results on the intel  ich10r in achi mode

OK doorules, but now is my Windows System setup, I would like to avoid reinstalling everything.

My 8 sata ports are used :
Marvell : OCZ and a 1To Samsung for backup
ICH10R : 4 Seagates, 1 Raptor and 1 optical drive.

I don't get it...  Try what ?  Reinstallation my system ?
I would rather put the IDE to AHCI for the Marvell Controler.

no, i simply meant to switch the os drive which i believe is your single ocz ssd to the intel port, that's if the optical will work from the marvelle, no need to redo windows

Re:SATA III/6G Firmware and Software Updates Released 2010/11/12 18:03:54 (permalink)
Hey guys i got myself a new Classified3 Motherboard and i have some issues with Corsair SandForce F60 SSD Drive. Just before i started, i did firmwire update on marvell chip as shown on the first post then i firmwire updated the corsair ssd drive to new version. I installed windows 7 + latest IRST (v10) and did all the tweeks for better performance, i then run ATTO benchmark and my drive performed like this:
http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x376/shimano87bc/?action=view&current=ssd.jpg#!oZZ1QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx376%2Fshimano87bc%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3Dssd.jpg%26
Well that's kinda bad since this drive could do Write: 275/ Read 285. Is anybody else having same issues ? is the marvell sata3/6gb controller to blame for this ? should i sitch the ssd to the ich10 controller instead ? i all ready have all the slots filled so that's why i prefered to use the sata3 port. Also there is one more strange thing, in the Marvell Bios i see the Sata Mode is IDE Mode, shoudn't that suppose to be AHCI ? is there anyway to change it ? http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x376/shimano87bc/?action=view&current=ssd.jpg#!oZZ2QQcurrentZZhttp%3A%2F%2Fs1178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx376%2Fshimano87bc%2F%3Faction%3Dview%26current%3DIMAG1046.jpg%26

not sure how to switch to AHCI but if you can enable RAID do it. I don't believe you have to build an array and AHCI is enable when RAID is enabled.

Swithing between AHCI, IDE, and RAID is pretty simple.

1)  Make sure you have drivers installed for AHCI/RAID.

2) Follow this link:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922976
Forgot to mention that you swith it in the BIOS after you have performed all of the above.

owcraftsman, I got the same problem as you, posted on page 3 I think, I can't find how to modify the IDE to AHCI for the Marvell Controller
I was aslo advice to move to the ICH10R controller, I have an OCZ Vertex 2 120Go, this is what ATTO's telling about the drive :

Not bad

Ok i've switch-ed to Intel controller but things didn't got any better! http://img44.imageshack.us/i/ssda.jpg/
This is the performance i got, its kinda low isn't it ? any ideeas on what to do to improve performance ? also there is something even worst happening. I get random freez'es of my sistem verry often, in games or plain desktop browsing or just doing nothing. Any ideea what could be ? i got another windows with the same settings on this, on my hard drive and i got no problems there so i assume its something related to the ssd drive!

Looks good to me, This is my Atto Bench Run on an Intel 160GB drive on an Intel Controller. As for the random freezes, not sure.

Well, i only got max ~240MB/Write, u got ~260, i've also seen other tests do ~270. Shouldn't my drive do a litte more better write ?

The more important for our daily use of the computer is the Read permormances, you don't write much on the SSD, only when you install something, most of the time it's only read access.

Ah, so i guess its ok ? i get 275 - 280Mb on Read i guess that's quite ok! I don't know what to do about this freez stuff. I got freez verry often. I dissabled my Xfi Sound Card Xtrem Gamer because i somehow blame her because after the freez my sounds goes off then few seconds after its a freez. I see no freez until now lets hope i can fix it somehow!

Thanks,
Jacob

but you also have issues with pci-e cards do you not, i know mine doesn't work and hasn't for months, not much of an alternative

Is it the PCIe card in your sig? We are aware of some compatibility issues with specific controllers, sometimes memory low gap can help, otherwise we are looking out how to increase the option rom space to improve compatibility.
