Now running on an ultrawide, I get disappointed if a game can't match the proper resolution.

Monitor size makes a big difference on the 1080p vs 1440p. My 15 in laptop is great at 1080p. My 27in monitor pretty much required 1440p. Adjust settings to maintain at least 60 fps.

Sharpness is the way to go. Shadows tend to kill my fps more than any other setting.

I also always use native. I have 1440p so it's easier even with my old 1080. The right issue is the balance between details and FPS. It's difficult on 144 Hz with my GPU.

3440x1440 always native, and will prefer resolution over settings. I can not imagine going back for 16:9

Is ultrawide really worth it? Limited to no support with older games (which is probably the majority of what I play) seems to make it a no go for gaming.

There's a lot of patches and mods for an older games, to enable ultrawide support

So does the game get stretched, or how does the game look in ultrawide? What makes ultrawide better?

Maximum setting .. most likely, but depends on the game and what kind of effects/options from setting.

There are always certain settings that cost you a ton of fps for very little or no obvious effect, or even settings that sometimes look worse but eat frame rate, like some iterations of volumetric fog, or volumetric anything for that matter. There is always a sweet spot in settings but it varies from game to game and might require a bit of tweaking. But anyway always try to run your monitor at its native resolution and turn settings down to achieve your fps goal, most monitors do not run at non native resolutions very well anyway, from bad upscaling to higher input lags, most monitors are very specifically tuned for their native resolution and refresh rates.

Even in Singleplayer, having a high framerate is so much more enjoyable for me. Max resolution is best imo.

For me it really depends on the game. Stable 60FPS is my baseline though, I play a lot of single player games so I don't really feel anything better after that but I do notice if it jumps around from 70 to 60 or 55 and back again. With a game like Assassins Creed Odyssey I need the world to have its foliage so it gets set to 1080p. I generally start with 1440p and then tune the settings down until I get a stable 60.

4k + max settings is the dream, but I'll tend to knock something like Cyberpunk down to 1440p to keep all the extra effects.

1440p at at least 100+ fps, I mostly use high settings in games because ultra is a scam in like 99.8% of cases, although there are games where the difference is actually noticeable, rare as they may be.

Right now I'm limited by hardware (both monitor and GPU/computer). I often have graphics settings VERY VERY low or at best, medium in order to get up over 60fps minimum. I'm using a 1080p monitor right now (not a great one but it does the trick). In the coming months, I'm hoping to build a new machine AND upgrade to a 1440p monitor. Trying to track down a 3080/3070Ti/3070/3080Ti in that order. If that happens, once I wipe away the tears of joy, I will DEFINITELY boost up settings.

Settings over resolution. Resolution means nothing, id rather have it looking as pretty and highest fps as i possibly can, not how many pixels i can jam into a scene. I game for the game, not the resolution its played at.

In most games, maxing out the resolution will only drop your frames significantly while you gain minimally in actual graphics. Its better to find a sweet spot between Mid-High that gets you optimal frames, while keeping a high quality graphics :D

I stick with 1440p on my RTX 3070 and everything runs fine. In COD for some reason I have to turn off ray tracing because whenever someone throws a Molotov or there is fire with it on my FPS drops

A notch below max settings usually nets me the same graphical fidelity while providing me good enough FPS. So I'd say high resolution + high-ish graphics, but not maxed out.
