I wish i could just say one or the other but im such a picky pain in the butt that i pretty much optimize for each game. No geforce experience though, turn down all the settings in game and set them up in the nvidia control center. I didnt have alot of time to mess with the new Alienware monitor cause my step up happened right after i got the monitor but the little time i did get to play with it was amazing.

So my pref is max settings as long as im getting 60fps

Whatever gets you there is best visually.

It does depend on what games you are doing though crazy fast games get a benefit to smoother animations if you care about them but if you are playing a walk and talk go go ray tracing and max settings

Both? Both is good.

I'm stuck on 1080p (for now) so I can afford both xD

Once I'll get a 1440p and I have fps problems, usually going to lower some settings rather than the resolution.

No idea but when I still had my gtx 970 and I upgraded to mu 1440p screen, in some titles it wouldn't work(because of 4 GB Video ram) I would turn down my resolution to 1080P

I think go for 2k resolution and max setting to high, you will get good fps and great experience too, 2k isnt bad either at 34" in my opinion

Depends on the game. Competitive FPS games I want higher, smoother frames as close to the max my monitor can put out. Story driven single players game all about max settings with frames close to 60.

I've always tried to get both (I'm greedy).  I used to want max res at all costs.  I had a 1600x1200 19in CRT back in 2000.  Now I'm content with 1440p and max settings.  Once I get an 3000 series card, then I will start to enjoy ray tracing.  My 1080 isn't up to the task.

It depends on your rig and what it can handle, but I would prefer better settings over higher resolution.

Typically I go for higher resolution over highest settings since I prefer a cleaner image, but typically I can get a decent balance of both these days. Most new games offer a good graphics menu. Big fan of downsampling when possible.

I mostly go for the highest settings with playable framerates, I mostly play single player games, so more eye candy for me!

Re: Resolution vs Settings 2021/05/25 19:01:03 (permalink)
I definitely prioritize my frame rate and try to hit my monitor refresh rate first. Then, I'll just add on settings that make or break the graphics, like shadows and texture. Then I'd bring it up to whatever resolution would work out. So in the end, a good enough GPU means finding a balance doesn't matter! But I'm still rocking a 970, so I gotta go tinkering a bit.

Some youtuber said and i agree that for playing - high settings, for recording/screenshots - ultra settings. My preferred resolution is 1440p.

Still struggling with my old 970 :D

I max out the settings, I would prefer both but if I have to turn settings down I immediately start shopping for better hardware. I have a sickness, its costs me money, but I love to see games in the highest detail they were designed for.

I go balanced, I won’t max one out at the expense of the other.

When it comes to single-player games I crank up the resolution and settings to max don't care if it stutters but if it is an fps game then I will lower the setting to get higher frames.

Max settings has diminishing returns while stepping up in resolution looks far better

Re: Resolution vs Settings 2021/05/31 12:14:47 (permalink)
This is basically the question I'm facing. I'm using 1440p, but I found the FPS too low for my taste. I don't know if the new generation of cards (And more specifically the 3080 Ti) will be enough to give me high FPS on max settings at 2160p or not. To be fair, 1440p should be perfectly manageable if that's your concern.

Neither... Higher FPS means minimizing both. Unfortunately with the transition from CRT to LCD this means playing ball with the native display... hence trying to hit 100 posts at a shot at a 3080 Ti.

I think I'd have to go with higher quality settings compared to resolution, for me 1080p is enough, unless 4k is something you really want to stick with

This^^ I think a good balance usually does the trick. If hardware allows run all settings at 75% of max setting of that. (Very High, High, Medium, low) for example go with High. Start there and then tweak to your favorite optimized eye candy setting.

I don't think it will make much of a difference. I would focus on the size of the monitor more

Depends on the game.
In most cases, I prefer a mixed state.
