PCMag - Ready to Spend? US Shoppers Willing to Pay 50% Above Retail Price This Holiday Season

“Our survey also found that 76% of respondents are willing to search for used or refurbished items to get what they need--and some of those would even consider using their own bot.

How far are you willing to go to find—and buy—everything on your holiday shopping list? The global supply chain is a mess as we get closer to the end of the year. We suggest starting your shopping early, but many shoppers are ready to pay a premium to get what they need.

PCMag surveyed 1,116 US adults about their holiday shopping plans. We found that 76% of respondents are willing to go to resellers to buy everything on their list. A further 46% say they have accepted that they'll need to pay an inflated resale price.

Given the ongoing chip shortage and the issue with bots buying up limited stock, 28% of respondents don't think they have a fair chance of getting a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X this year. But 72% of respondents say they are willing to pay 25% to 50% above the retail price.

Given this reality, 28% of respondents are now considering using their own bot to help them acquire the tech items they need. Another option is to find a substitute product, with 49% of respondents specifying they will find an alternative device and 40% willing to purchase a refurbished one.”

My thoughts:  PC Mag’s survey exemplifies the present societal consumerism and is a rather depressing commentary.

If you were a retailer/reseller/scalper and read this survey, what would be your reaction?

They have been overly-ready to spend in boredom for the past year, so of course they are going to be seeing these results.

Nope, not going to pay over Retail, for things "I want" ..... if the consumer would just boycott this whole - buy at any price ... mind set, we would all be better off - IMO

I'll wait until quantity is available and I'll make due with what I have until then. I'm not paying too much over MSRP.

^Agree and I think there is a disconnect with some shoppers between wanting something and needing it.

Scalpers exist because of this attitude.

I have seen several articles that indicate consumers are very aware of their decreasing buying power and are planning to cut back on holiday shopping.  There are indications that the after Thanksgiving sales, thus far, have not gone too well for retailers.

If only waiting for prices to "go back to normal" was a thing.
Fun story - guy wanted to buy a truck back in March - determined his only option was to do a build order because he's picky.  He kept pushing us off because he was "not sure when he needed it."  Talked to him every week for 3 months.
First week of June I told him flat out - if you don't order this now, we won't be able to get the features you want and the price will go up.  His response was "well I don't want the truck until after the summer."
Guy just contacted me to do the build - guess what, some of his must-have features are no longer available AND the price went up $8500.  Actually more, because he can no longer get supplier pricing so it's actually up $15000.  AND it won't be ready until April.  At the earliest.
He's mad at me, because I "didn't tell him" this could happen.  I just forwarded the email I sent him 6 months ago telling him that exactly this would happen.

I'm not saying go out and buy from scalpers, but waiting is as big a risk as anything.

"Waiting for the prices to go back to normal" is mentioned in the forums quite a lot, particularly in reference to GPUs.  Some of us keep saying that this is the new normal and the higher prices we will see next year, will be the normal, but I think it sometimes falls on deaf ears.

It is like waiting for the price of gas to go back to $.38 a gallon.
