Hello, I have a RTX2070 Black. It is an RMA unit and has around 4 months of operation time in my PC.
Since a week I have been getting a weird behavior. Sometimes it ramps up to really high RPM and goes down again and up again... for around 2-8 seconds.
I have a custom fan curve with Afterburner but weirdly enought it does it at low temperatures and load. (30°C-40°C)
Another weird thing is that the RPM dont show up in eighter Afterburner or HWInfo.
Could it be something with the Fan-Control-Unit or drivers?

    Hi Tilu1TV !

I have a 2070 black edition and awhile back saw something similar. Fan would wind up for like 1-2 seconds and then immediately wind back down. Otherwise the card is fine so I just attrbuted it to a crap built in fan curve. Have you tried using EVGA precision X1 to set the curve? Just to see if the fan RPM are displayed properly there? If not, try rolling back the driver if you just updated to the latest one. It may not hurt to go ahead and use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) for this task.

    Cheers!

Clean your FREAKING FANS, and check connectivity with your fan controllers, they might not be functioning at maximum capacity because of some power issues.

I have the same issue but only with one fan.  When not spinning it makes this annoying clicking sound and I see the fan twitch and then it will spin up to 100%, still clicking.  The other fan is not spinning and the card is sitting at under 30c.

Nothing to do with fans being dirty (unsurprisingly).  Cables look fine and are not impacting on the fan.  This seems to be a common fault with the 20 series cards from what I've seen.  I've raised a support question and will have to insist on an RMA (although from your post it sounds like that may be a waste of time as well).  Only other option is to take the fans off and runs some external ones.

The problem started with neither installed, but I tried each to set a custom fan curve. Neither really helped as the right fan seems to do its own thing. I might retry X1 even though it's pretty terrible.

Fans ramping up and down is a symptom of the thermal paste on the GPU core needing to be replaced. It isn't necessarily the only possible cause, and the reason could be something else, but it is a symptom of that condition.
The temperature reading you see in software is an average reading. So, don't be fooled into thinking that the thermal paste doesn't need to be replaced just because the average temperature reading is pretty normal. A hot spot can develop which will cause the fan ramping issue without greatly affecting the average core temperature. This has been reported here as peoples' experience numerous times.

    That's very good advice.  Thanks!
