I just recently installed my new RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra and I'm not seeing the improvements I would have expected over my RTX 2070 Super XC Ultra.

System:
  • Intel i7-3960X
  • ASUS P9X79 WS
  • Corsair DDR3-1866 (64 GB)
  • Samsung 860 EVO 1TB SSD (boot)
  • Samsung SM843 240GB SSD (secondary program files)
  • WD Black 4TB (storage & games)
  • Corsair HX-850
  • Corsair H100i Platinum
  • Windows 10 Pro (2004)
  • Nvidia Drivers (456.71)
  • Corsair 900D
  • Acer XV272U 2K monitor (144Hz)
  • Acer XU272U V 2K monitor (170Hz)

Test I have ran so far:
  • Fire Strike: 17,215 with 2070 Super vs 19,486 with 3080
  • Time Spy:  8,510 with 2070 Super vs 11,404 with 3080
  • COD MW: 101 FPS on normal graphics with 2070 Super vs 141 on normal graphics with 3080

I'm seeing most COD MW benchmarks with the 3080 in the 150's at 2K (2560x1440) resolution at ultra settings and when I go with ultra settings, I'm down in the low 90's.  Is my card being bottlenecked that much from my order system or is there something else that I'm missing?

Thanks for your feedback!!

Motherboard is bottle necking you also.  There is a registry fix but it has to done after every drive upgrade.  My second Folding at Home box is an X79 motherboard and I do the hack to improve my 2 2080ti's in that box folding.

Isn't the 3960x a 2nd gen Intel part aka "Sandy Bridge"? Even if it is I don't see your system bottlenecking to extreme levels, but bottlenecking it most assuredly is.

It's being bottle necked.

Ive had a similar issue with my 6700k. My cpu is limiting me badly. Some games I'm barely gaining.
My gpu is often sitting at 40-50% use, as the cpu just can't feed it.

I'm waiting on the 5900X to build a new system

I mean, you have a decade old (if I recall correctly) CPU. I'd bet heavily that it is definitely bottlenecking your CPU, though I guess it's hard to be sure. Still, in those benchmarks getting higher than, I'm ALSO sure they had a more recent CPU. :P

I would bet that it is being bottlenecked. The CPU architecture is old and not highly overclockable. Also you might see better gains at 4k than 1440p. For a lower resolution like 1440p with a higher refresh rate the CPU is important, especially to have a high clock speed. I remember my sandy bridge-e chips wouldn't do much more than 4.5ghz at best.

  • Corsair DDR3-1866 ouch
I saw big score improvements going from 3600 cl15 to 4600 cl17. and that 3600 ram was no slouch

I couldnt imagine ddr3 1866. Your system needs upgrades

you have a nice psu, nice case, nice gpu, nice storage. why so unbalanced? its like opposite extremes. mobo, cpu, and ram. Nobody said you need top tier but if your going to run a flagship gpu you should modernize some of the other components

Here's a really good Intel CPU architecture comparison: https://youtu.be/vJfhYOk1XMo

TLDW: It really looks like you'll want a 7700K or 8700K at 1440P to not be as bottlenecked. Obviously CPU overclocking will help with that a little, but the newer CPUs can be overclocked as well.

Edit: Here's COD MW warzone being benchmarked at 1440P in that video: https://youtu.be/vJfhYOk1XMo?t=294

That CPU is your bottleneck. But to upgrade Intel don't you have to do the mobo too?
In 2 weeks releases the new Ryzen chips, with the 5900X being the fastest gaming chip out there. If I were you I'd grab a Ryzen 5600X, 3600mhz ram (good rams under 200 rn), and a 100$ mobo or a $200 X570 Tomahawk imo. Your fps will double xD

CPU, MB, and RAM is bottlenecking... You can't put a Lambo engine in a 1991 Toyota Carolla and expect it to perform... Lol

Seen this benchmark, to support everyone’s feedback. I knew there would be a bottleneck, just didn’t know that much.

Yes, system upgrade is in the future, just to this point haven’t really been needed as the old girl still was able to hold her own in games.

Thanks for your feedback and confirm my suspicions 😔.
