I'm a bit late to this party, but what in the name of all holy happened to RAM prices? Do they manufacture them on Mars now? Some people say that mobile phone market is to blame. How so? Should I expect prices to drop anytime soon, or is this a new reality now?

Strong demand from all sectors of the industry are pushing prices higher. In fact Samsung is building another fab to try and help ease the burden.

Is there a timeline for the end of this craziness? At least, approximately? I compiled a config for my future machine, and, currently, it stands at $3,500, with GPU being $300 over and RAM staggering $450 over. So, the whole rig is 30% over reasonable market price. I could wait. The question is, how long? RAM is even more of an issue than GPU right now.

What Ram are you buying that's $450. over your budget or "expected to pay" range?

Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 64GB (4x16GB). As you can see, nothing too crazy. Last time I checked, it was $350 (or it was some other corsair 4*16 2400 set, but I'm pretty positive it was that). Now it is 800. That being said, if there is a set of 4*16gb 2400 you know about that has a reasonable price - let me know. So far, couldn't find anything. As for expected, I hope to at least be under $500, ideally under $400.

I bought GSkil 32gb (4x8) and it was $489.99 for the set, below is a copy and paste on the price paid from my order:
G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2400 (PC4 19200) Desktop Memory Model F4-2400C15Q-32GRK Item #: N82E16820231795 Sold by: Newegg Qty: 1 $489.99
The cost of the exact same memory today:
$379.99
Don’t expect to buy 16gb modules for a cheap price, as they have always been expensive. Not sure where the expected prices are coming from at this time.

You must do a lot of video encoding or similar to need that amount of Ram. I do a little here and there and even then I've only seen about 12GB get used. For my normal use and gaming, never used more than ~8GB. But that amount does explain the price tag...

I really do hope prices can stabilize and maybe edge down some. That depends upon demand.

When did you buy that RAM at $489.99? Just a month or so ago? Purchased 03/18/2017 from Newegg: CORSAIR Dominator Platinum 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Desktop Memory Model CMD32GX4M4C3000C15 Item #: N82E16820236029$259.99 Current price on Newegg (a year later): $424.99 ..but that's actually gone down from ~2 months ago when it was $449.99

I do architectural work, and there is a hungry hippo called Revit, the program for modeling buildings along with all the engineering systems. Some models, such as stadiums, eat so much ram, that I maxed out my 32gb once and had to shut down all other programs. And now I have to run VR simulations on top of that. That is why I want to get 4*16bg. With where it is all going, I gonna have to max out ram in the future at 128gb, and I'd like to keep the slots open for that. rjohnson11 I really do hope prices can stabilize and maybe edge down some. I sure hope so. How much they charge for the amount I need is madness is madness right now.

Ouch. Yes I had a friend who used some architectural software to make like animated fly-throughs of buildings etc.. he'd set it all up and then would have to just walk away from the computer for half a day to leave it to render. Crazy. That was years ago though. Hmmm. I wonder whatever happened to the idea of PCIe RAM. Would Optane memory help your situation at all? - it's more of a caching memory for opening programs though rather than processing, afaik.

Yup, sounds about right. We used to do just images and video. Images took from 1 hour to two days to render, depending on scene and quality. Videos could take up to a week, so we often outsourced them. 8gb of ram was more than enough for a while. Then 360 3d panoramas arrived (for google cardboard and such). Render time jumped 10 times, the complexity of models increased (now you had to model everything around your point of view) and so arms race officially began. We quickly chocked 8gb machines, 16gb soon followed. 32gb is standard now, but we even push that. Then game engines made it to our industry and demand for gaming video cards was on the horizon. Lumion was the first our office adopted. It is just a game that can eat Revit files, as well as others that we use, and render videos very quickly. It could run on office horrible videocards relatively well. Videos now took about 6 hours to render (8 seconds per frame), which was amazing. Although, they looked kinda cartoony, but our clients did not mind. And now, behold the hippo - Virtual Reality. Clients are ecstatic about it, and so are we. We can now walk our buildings and see how they feel and perform before they are built. It is really amazing. Also, hours of render time were replaced with 1-minute loading. So, on top already crazy hungry Revit, there is now VR simulation that runs parallel with it. In addition to RAM jumping up to 64gb, we are now in arm's race of video cards too. We can already choke 1080ti with current HTC vive and moderate model, and now we have HTC vive Pro coming, with 70% more resolution. Clients often complained about pixelized headsets, so we are getting it. And, most probably, Quadro P6000 24gb too. Office rigs slowly mutate into hardcore gaming machines. For the first time ever, my home PC is behind, and it will stay there, even after my upgrade. :) If it even happens, with all these prices... PCIe Ram is still in the cradle. But it looks promising. Optane is crazy expensive and is only good for large amounts of small bits of data. It is on our list, however, we are not early adopters. If it helps to stir Revit models, we might be getting those. But drivers and optimization for that is absent right now.

While reading your post I was thinking you should probably switch to dedicated compute cards instead of 1080s, but yup, Quadro P6000 for sure. With the immense cost of RAM at present (and ever-increasing demands for capacity and speed), maybe alternatives like PCIe RAM will come to the fore... time will tell. I'm old enough to have owned a Commodore Amiga 500, which were very capable machines for their time. Amazing how much tech has progressed, and continues to progress in leaps and bounds. Your job sounds fascinating - I love tech and love architecture, combining the two would be the ultimate to me! Sadly I majored in finance and public accounting instead, and now work as a forensic auditor. I say 'sadly' because it was never my 'dream' to work in this field, it was more for practical reasons. Probably one of my biggest regrets looking back.

In $1000 range, you can either have a video card that runs professional programs properly (Quadro) or video games and VR (GTX), not both. So we went to 1080ti for and made a machine specifically for VR with it. Now we need both professional programs and VR on the same machine, so hi-end Quadro is the only choice. It is a good thing we upped our VR rig to 64gb or ram a year ago. We should be able to hold on for a year, waiting for the prices to drop, and then push it further. The architecture was ranked 8th is the list of the worst occupations when it comes to effort/pay ratio. lol. I love my job, I would not change it for anything, but they have a point. It is a lot of effort and commitment for a very moderate pay. Also, this field is the most susceptible to economic downturns. 2008 forced 25% of architects to quit the field. So, as far as sensibility and security go, architecture is a very stormy sea. But, it seems to me, you either have one or the other.

There was a burnt factory? Is it for real? Because I remember when there was a flood in Thailand (?) a few years back that drove prices for HDD up 80-120%. So, if the burnt factory is for real, we will see the price drop as soon as the new one is operational.

Stop buying the products will reduce the prices or maybe not because it's all price fixed collusion anyway.

I paid $489 september 12, 2014, right after DDR4 launched.
Look at older model of ram and see if you can find a better price. If you go for the fastest 16gb modules, then price is going to suffer.
I may have missed what platform you are running. You mentioned 4x16gb kit, could you upgrade to a HEDT motherboard and use 8x8gb, which could help reduce price?

Ahh ok, that's when there was a severe shortage of DDR4 supply for the new platform and everyone was price gouging, right?

Hah yes, it was the Dean of Arch School in NYC that basically talked me out of it. He said you needed Masters minimum to even hope to get a job, it's many years of study and you need to graduate top of the class to get in at the ground floor, then another 5 years to get licensed (I think) - assuming you can even get a job, so unless you have family in the business, you either need to have gobs of money because it's going to be many years before arch will earn you a decent living (if ever) in NYC, or you have to have a love of architecture that is so strong that living in a cardboard box is worth it. The other issue was in NYC there isn't much room to get very creative due to space restrictions - basically it's "here's a box, see how many rooms you can squeeze into it", lol. I still almost went for it.

a11out Ballistix Sport LT 64GB Kit (16GBx4) DDR4 2666 goes for $666 dollars now. Still $200 over, but it is a good start. Corsair dropped prices (on Amazon) as well. Sounds like the sales are falling, forcing manufacturers to unlock the closet where they keep their decency.
but only a few teaspoons full, the 16GB corsair vengence kit i bought in feb 2017 is still 80% higher now than what i paid.
