I would like to ask some questions to see if it warrant to buy new Motherboard, I am planning to buy new GTX 1080TI, thinking of the K|NGP|N or the Elite version.

- Is it worth it to change all the system to PCI-E 3.0, or the performance benefits from PCI-E 2.0 to 3.0 not worth it?
- When the 11G-P4-6699-KR will be available? As I don't like to void the warranty of the card to add my own water block.

My current system specs:
i7 x980
24GB Ram
GTX 780Ti K|NGP|N
4K Monitor

Since you're asking about EVGA video cards and specifically the series 10 video cards I will move this post to the EVGA 10 Series forum. In order to answer your question about which series 10 card to buy you might wish to post your present system specs. Based on that info our forum members can give you advice if your present system specs are good enough for maximum benefit.

AMD Ryzen 9 7950X,  Corsair Mp700 Pro M.2, 64GB Corsair Dominator Titanium DDR5  X670E Steel Legend, MSI RTX 4090 Associate Code: H5U80QBH6BH0AXF. I am NOT an employee of EVGA

My 1080 is running on PCIe 2.0 (X58 Classified). You'll want to post what CPU you're running and what resolution you game at.

If you're on a CPU running around 4ghz and game above 1080p; you're fine. I game at 1440p and see a minimum of 60fps in most games. I'm typically sitting around 144 fps (monitor is 144hz) on games like Overwatch. More demanding games are around 80 fps (FarCry 5). This is with all settings cranked to absolute maximum. This is not to say you won't see a bottleneck at all but it can be minimal and will not be induced by the PCI bus. It will most likely be related to your CPU.

EDIT: Just saw you added your CPU and monitor. You have a pretty close rig to mine. I'm on an i7 970 at 4.2ghz. You'll be fine. No need to upgrade just yet but will be soon.

Thank you for the advice, this means the 1080ti I will get will run very well with the PCI-E 2 without the need to upgrade. But still just to know, with PCI-E 3.0, how much more performance I will get?

It’s hard to say when stock will show up again other to say the future. Best to use the auto notify option to know.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.

I think it may be better to restate your original question.  The issue isn't so much with PCIe 3.0 or 2.0.  On a current gen motherboard (e.g. X299), testing a card at PCIe 3.0 and 2.0 will not yield too much of a difference (maybe 3%-5% at most).

The more important comparison is the performance level between the platform you're on compared to the platform you're considering.  X58 still uses Tri-Channel DDR3, a slower NB/SB, PCIe 2.0, and aging performance at the CPU level.  X299, for example, has much faster CPU options, a much faster PCH, Quad-channel DDR4 memory, and PCIe 3.0.  The PCIe slot revision is only one factor, which is also affected by the rest of the system build.  At that point, you're not simply comparing PCIe 3.0 and 2.0, but also the performance improvement from an older CPU/chipset/memory and newer CPU/chipset/memory.  The differences add up.

That does not mean you cannot use a 1080 Ti on an X58 motherboard, but you will be bottlenecked.  Bottlenecked enough to cause issues in games?  Probably not, especially if you overclock.  In fact, 4K gaming should see a healthy improvement to your FPS because of the specs of the 1080 Ti.  However, you will be leaving performance on the table, and that's OK if you're waiting to upgrade.  Once you do upgrade, however, you'll still see a greater improvement in overall system performance (of course), as well as an improvement in graphics performance.

It's also worth noting that replacing the stock heatsink on a 1080 Ti with a waterblock does not void your warranty, so long as you send in the card in factory condition (i.e. reinstalling the original heatsink) if you ever need to send it in for replacement.

I already ordered 11G-P4-6696-KR and a water block, the thing about upgrading the motherboard is that you need to upgrade everything else with it, and that is my next step, and about the warranty, this is good news :) As I always use water blocks.

Thank you.

While that is true for now. We are reaching the limit. Gamers Nexus used two Titan V's in mGPU on x8/x8 and x16/x16 and found a decrease in performance on x8/x8 over x16/x16. While the impact won't be significant, it will affect the performance by a few percent, the same as overclocking.

It would be nice if NVIDIA stay gently with new series.
But if CUDA cores are similar and I will see performance I will buy some EVGA GTX1080Ti compatible with waterblock.
Most important is because after GPU I immediately upgrade monitor, no waiting any more and I will concentrate on 4K and size, not higher fps than 60 or GSync. Probably LG 43UD79.
For 4K and future games it would be recommended new Generation or at least GTX1080Ti.

Too give you a *ballpark figure having come from a 980x at 4.2ghz myself about a year ago...you're going to leave anywhere from 15-30% performance on the table versus running a newer generation processor depending upon title and resolution.  With a 1440p 165hz monitor, you're in no danger of overkill on GPU horsepower either. You won't be able to run Ghost Recon: Wildlands on ultra settings even at 1440p and maintain an min of 60 FPS. On the other hand, you should be able to run Doom 2016 with every setting maxed at 1440p and stay well over a min of 100 FPS. I personally consider a 1080 Ti an entry level 4K GPU.

That's what I thought... GTX1080Ti is not for all games on 4K.
I would be much happier with next generation but depend what NVIDIA decide with price.
Because of that I didn't hurry with monitors, I waited to price of 4K drop on normal value and LG 43UD79 is arround 550 euro.

I don't get your argument since if you went crazy with mods you could make several games unplayable at 1080p.  The VAST majority of games can be played at high or ultra at 1440p on a 1080 ti.
I don't know how you get entry level from that. I have no idea what you mean by 'quantity over quality' and congrats on your choice...whatever it was.

I am on a 2600k and when it comes to day to day gaming you can run anything near max settings.  If you're chasing benchmarks then, yes, a new rig will help a little but not due to PCIE limitations.

Honestly wait for spectre/meltdown's hardware fix in an upcoming generational release so you don't drop a bunch of money into something that comes with performance loss due to the software patches.  (although it looks like your processor will not receive any patch so if you are concerned about spectre/meltdown vulnerability, getting some used gear would be beneficial in the interim.)

I agree ... for now, negligible or not significant difference in performance between PCI-E 2.0 vs 3.0 if OP puts his new 1080Ti in his old rig.  The main limiting factor is the CPU.

constantinnc, given you've dropped some big $$$ on a new GPU, you may want to consider upgrading to more recent CPU.  i7-980x can push an 1080 Ti but not to it's max (so your CPU is your main limiting factor ... and not PCI-E 2.0).

Re: Questions PCI-E 2.0 - 3.0 and more 2018/05/18 00:13:18 (permalink)
System Configuration:

Graphic Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti FTW3
Processor: Intel Core i7-980X Processor (3.741MHz)
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6X58D PREMIUM
Memory: 24GB @ 1.336MHz

I tested the games with my old EVGA 780Ti and the new EVGA GTX 1080Ti, in FHD (1920x1080), 2K WQHD (2560x1440 Native), and 4K UHD (3840x2160) 200% scaling, because my monitor’s native is 2560x1440, I had to scale to 200% to simulate the 4K, in the charts you notice that I don’t have records for DOOM 4K, as there is no 200% scaling, only 100% max. I know this testing is irrelevant now because of the old system I am using, and I can get higher by a noticeable margin if I upgrade, this is noticeable with the close FPS between the HD and 2K.

I am really impressed with this card, as always EVGA do an excellent job in quality and parts, the card looks amazing, in the tests the maximum temperature is 72C, that’s great in compare to the old cards, the 780Ti for example used to reach the 82C mark, the new iCX technology, heatsink design and optimized airflow worked very well, I was surprised that none of the fans was running on idle operation, and with 99% GPU load and 72C, I could not hear the fans, I had to visually check the fans to see if something is wrong, I didn’t expect that at all.

EVGA thank you for this incredible card.
