Hi,

I have been using Precision X for many years. As far back as I can remember, it has crashed after several days to a week of running. I notice this because the GPU temp, which I keep in the system tray is gone, and when I mouse over the precision x icon, it disappears. It's done this with different processors, motherboards, DDR2 to DDR4, when I was running Windows 7 and XP, with four or five different video cards, and whether or not the card was overclocked.

After buying the Samsung 960, I noticed that Samsung magician would typically shut down at the same time. I no longer run that app. as I changed boot drives.

You can't imagine my excitement at hearing that EVGA had replaced precision X with a new app., with a different code base. I installed it immediately. Within a couple days it did the same F%%$%&ing thing, with essentially the same information in the event viewer. This morning I noticed that it had stopped again.

I've searched the Internet over the years with no luck, including this forum. If after all this time, the new version crashes more frequently, I'll find another app to overclock the video card. I just hate the learning curve, as the interface is usually overblown. If I do keep this app., I need to know how to increase the size of the font in the system tray showing the GPU temp. Compared to core temp, it's tiny to the point of being illegible.

Thank you very much for your time.

    Its a Win 7 issue ....

there is a work around - way to make it Not shutdown - Windows Task Scheduler  ... I'll look for the post ..

    Found it

I'll Make a Couple of Additions to the information Below
[Quote "Task Scheduler will stop the task (Precision and other programs) after a certain number of days the task has been running"]

    1) Check the box - Run task soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed
    2) If the task fails, Restart every:

I think Precision XOC is somehow crashing and closing itself after 3 days?
Or is Windows (Windows 7) doing some weird scheduling work causing EVGA Precision XOC to close itself.

By default, Task Scheduler will stop the task (Precision and other programs) after a certain number of days the task has been running, and that is normal..You can open Task Scheduler in various ways such as by pressing the Windows and R keys to open the Run dialog and type in taskschd.msc and click OK..Then click on Task Scheduler Library in the left pane..Then right-click on EVGA Precision XOC in the right pane and open the Properties..Then in the Settings tab you can change "Stop the task if it runs longer than:" to increase (or decrease) the number of days (which is  set to 3 days, except for Windows Pro versions which sets it to 1 day, I think) or just uncheck that setting to disable stopping the task altogether.

Why is that default and "normal"?  Very odd.

3 days seems to be the Windows default setting in Task Scheduler .... it was on my PC

Yeah, but why? That is crazy. Windows' background tasks don't shut off after 3 days, why would Microsoft decide to make non-Windows tasks shut off after 3 days by default? It makes no sense for Microsoft's tasks to behave that way, but for some reason it makes sense for non-Microsoft tasks to behave that way? What was Microsoft thinking? And why doesn't EVGA's software apply a non-default setting if the default setting makes no sense?

Cool GTX, Thanks for the reply, and the link. Did you read that I indicated that I'm currently running windows 10, and that it happened with XP, and seven?

It did it again this morning, less than 24 hours after I restarted it yesterday. The new version is doing it a lot more frequently than the previous version. Doesn't that figure?

The post to which your link points didn't help as I believe you have misinterpreted what task scheduler is doing for precisionX. The task is to start the application, not to keep it running. That is what the task does.

If anyone wants to test this, check off the box, and change the three days to one hour. Click ok, close the app if it's running, then use the schedule to start it. You'll see that it doesn't turn off after an hour. As ty_ger07 indicates, it would be crazy for the installation routine to create the task to start the app., and include a turned on option to turn it off after three days. Two last points on this - 1. It would be happening to everyone, every three days. 2. There would not be an event of the crash, which I included. I would have thought that number two would have obviously contraindicated it being closed by windows.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Did you also ?

    1) Check the box - Run task soon as possible after a scheduled start is missed
    2) If the task fails, Restart every:

Yes, I've tested this on a Win 7 systems - it worked to keep the task from shutting down

I've not had the issue (Precision shutting down/ crashing) under windows 10 .... might need to check controlled folder access ?

Issues with X1 operation - you may Need to "Allow an App through Controlled folder access"

Which Version of Precision are you using - X1 or the older XOC ?

Thanks Cool, but I have to ask if you read my post?

Again, I said that it crashed after a few hours. Crashed, as in crashed, not that it was a task that Windows terminated. Hours, not six days. Task scheduler starts that task, it doesn't stop it. Tasks started by scheduler stop on their own accord, not by the scheduler. Once it crashes, it is started manually by me, the user. The task scheduler is out of the picture, yet it will crash again.

Access restrictions on the folder in which the exe resides would be relevant only to running the app., not it crashing. And that would mean that windows installed the exe into a folder that I can't access, which, of course, would mean that I couldn't start the task, which I can.

Lastly, I mentioned that I'm using the latest version, X1. Shortly after which I mentioned that it shuts down much more frequently than the older version. I gave up on the newer one, and launched the older one days ago, and so far it hasn't crashed yet.

    Thanks.

I would try a fresh install of it --> using this procedure... https://forums.evga.com/How-Do-I-Troubleshoot-Precision-X1-Issues-m2941097.aspx

...and/ or  a fresh OS install, if possible for you.

For instance, for me a fresh OS install is pretty easy because the win 10 & main drivers are the only thing I have on my boot SSD

    Steve,

    Thanks for the response.

It amazes me that regardless of how clear I am, or how many times I state specific things, people post as if I had written almost nothing at all.

I mentioned, Steve that this problem has occurred with multiple versions, therefore multiple installs, and under different operating systems. Uninstalling, and reinstalling cannot work under those circumstances.

Perhaps you received a computer for christmas last year, and are just learning how they work. If that's the case, I would recommend spending your time reading forum posts, but wait a couple years before attempting to offer anything helpful.

...And it amazes me how condescending someone can be to a total stranger , who is taking time out of their day to try to help you.

You appear to be the one who can't get  simple software to run properly that millions of people have no trouble with - so possibly you need to put down your attitude, grow up  &  learn something yourself.?

You are going to find it hard to get anyone to help you on this or any other forum with your responses.

Look at what I wrote Steve, and evaluate it on its merits.

You are correct that it will be difficult to get help, assuming you mean relevant, effective help.

Just wanted to chime in here that I have had the same issue for quite some time, across different OS installs (Win7 + Win10).  As above, it is not the Task Manager shutting PX1 down, it is crashed/hanging.
