I have a ULTRA 850W PSU with 6pin and 8pin, im tring to get away from using the supplied adapter with 2 PCIe cables. can I power the card with one single 8pin to 6+2 dual connector and have 1 connector free? Or should I just replace my PSU with another brand?

    I would not do it.
But, a 960 is pretty low on power usage, so you should be able to use the adapter plug, but for anything more than that, I would not use the single plug. Dual plugs is much better, and safer since the crimp can be bad on the single plug ones (the one with an 8 pin and a 6 pin on the same connector).
