Im running a Corsair ax1200 possibly bought during gtx480's its been so long ago.  Do I switch now while Im in the process of upgrading to 10850 and z490?  I have an ax1200I ready to go but Ive been reading reviews and some people have had bad luck with them unlike the original ax's.  Or is it the time to put a new psu in before I have a problem?

I am impressed with the new PSU models. Quality has improved. I just picked up a CORSAIR RM 750X for a new build and it is extremely quiet. Gold certified and at low and medium loads the fan is switched off.

Technically, a Corsair AX1200 has an MTBF of 100,000 hours (11.4 years) of normal operation (on-time).

I would for sure keep/use it and not worry about it, it may be fine for years to come..But I, being me, would take the cover off of it and clean it out inside with some canned air and a paint brush..It's never recommended to disassemble a PSU though.

I have a AX1200i.  Granted it was replaced a while back during an event with some other components, it's been trucking along for 5-6+ years now and still has another 6 (?) years in warranty.  They're nice PSUs tbh.

I would replace the power supply personally, sure there may be nothing wrong with your current PSU but I would still change it out.

Also have you started building yet?

I had one too - it was solid built,.... but me being me - After around 6-7 years & building new systems..... I opted to replace with new at that point.  I didn't want to take the chance on it popping and taking everything out .

I had one of the first AX1200 PSUs in Europe and it died just within the 7 year warranty and Corsair replaced it with a new 1200 watt PSU. I have always trusted Corsair quality and that's why I continue to stick with them. I now have a Corsair 850 watt PSU as 1200 watts was overkill.

I was pretty sold on swapping it out but Bob brings up a good/great point.  Maybe Ill just swap the fan out and keep it running since the fan is usually the first failure point.  Seems with those numbers I have another 2-3 years left in it at least.  Im back to 50/50 on it now....the old "if its not broke dont fix it" comes to mind.  I still have storage to decide on(not sure 4tb sata or 2tb m.2, leaning towards 4tb sata though after watching gaming comparisons) so I have some time to think it over.

    I appreciate your input, thanks!

Been there done that a handful of times..Pretty easy to do..Then that'll give you the chance to clean it inside which it's probably in dire need of, and might make it run a bit cooler too..Just use common-sense precautions (insulated tools, gloves) and a fan that's equivalent/near equivalent in airflow/static pressure.

Be careful of discharge when cleaning. I'm weary of messing inside of PSUs.

Hey whoa there fella.........I haven't been here for a while but this place used to be family friendly....no need for all that.  Just kidding but I keep things pretty clean/blown out.  My rig sits in a middle atlantic rack with my stereo stuff and has huge filtered airflow. Thanks though for the input and semi-accurate advice...lol

What I told you was completely accurate..Even in a filtered environment, you may be surprised at the amount of dust particles the electromagnetic fields in a PSU will attract and accumulate over time like a, well, magnet.

While a PSU can last a long time I normally replace every two or three builds. I don't think I have hit the warranty on a newer one before I replace it.
