Hi,

yesterday I got my new X79 Dark.
After installing my other hardware I the PC didn't boot. On the board the POST Code b0 is finally shown.
The hardware in summary is:

Mainboard: X79 Dark
Processor: i7-3930K
RAM: G.Skill F3-12800-CL9D-8GBXL (4 Kits with 4GB on each module - at the moment 16 GB installed; Slots 1,3,5,7)
Graphiccard: Asus 670 GTX (2x - 1 mounted)
Power: beQuiet Dark Power Pro with 850 W

Result: POST Code b0

I can't tell you which Bios-version is present as the board did never boot up until now.

When everything is installed the POST Code changes to b7 (all RAM and second 670 GTX).

Does anybody have an idea what I'm doing wrong or what may be corrupt?

Make sure your BIOS selctor switch is set to either position 1 or 2.  Then press the clear cmos button and try to boot again to bios.  Then set memory to rated specs & voltage.  See then if you can then boot to Windows.

Thanks for your help bdary.
I changed to the second Bios and cleared the CMOS. After that the b0 came up again and the PCI-express lights one to five were blinking red.
I was not able to access the BIOS and therefore also not able to log on to Windows.

Edit: I have a set of Ripjaws (16 GB - F3-10666CL9Q) - do you think it would make sense to use them instead?

You could try that.  I think the code you're getting is memory related.  If the different ram don't work, try using only 1 stick in slot #1 and see if that works.

Check with One Memory Stick as bdary  says above. Check in the Memory Slot 1
B0 = CPU Memory controller configuration

Re: POST CODE b0 - Help needed 2013/10/06 08:15:45 (permalink)
Ok, I tried it with one the original modules and got b2 (after clearing the cmos).
Then I removed the this one and replaced them with one of the slower ones (one module with 4 GB, but also tried 2 of them), did clear the cmos again and tried to boot.
Now I have a b2 there and PCI-express 4 is blinking while PCI-express one is green (GTX 670). I did this with two different Bioses.
At least I got a first look on the boot-up screen and was told that there's a checksum error.
Options are F1 and F2 annd it doesn't make any difference - it never displays the Bios.
What should I do next?

Edit: @bcavnaugh,

I've seen that in my manual - but what does it tell me?

Could it be that this memory is not supported?
It looks like the memory that you have is for the Z87 and not the X79, yes some will work or may work but it us best to use memory for the Chip Set that you have.
For the X79 Dark take a look here http://www.gskill.com/en/configurator?manu=60&chip=28&model=1489

When you see F1 or F2 after a CMOS Clear Press the F1 Function Key, this should take you in the Bios after Holding down the Red Button for 3 or 4 Seconds.

Thanks for the hint with F1 and F2, but as I already wrote it doesn't work.

You may be right regarding the memory, but I checked the list before I bought the X79 Dark and found this:

G-SKILLF3-12800CL9D-4GBCO2GB1600MHz9-9-9-241.35V1+3+5+7, 1+3, 5+7For me this looks pretty the same except that it is not 2GB for each module but 4GB instead. 2GB-version ->

If you really think that this is the reason I'll buy different modules and try it. Please tell honestly what you think. What do you think?

The small blinking lights by the PCI-e lanes is normal during boot up.  They will be a steady red or green once booted into Windows.

From everything mentioned so far and what bcavnaugh has pointed out about your ram, I would think that is most likely why you're not able to boot.

Is it too late to return your 4 kits and pick up a quad channel kit that's on either EVGA's compatibility list or on the list at G.Skill??

This is just my opinion.  Do some more research on it or wait awhile longer to see if anyone else comes in with a new idea.  Up to you.

Just out of curiosity does your keyboard respond to get into the BIOs? If not do you have another keyboard to try? If you use only one stick of memory does the PC boot into the screen where it asks you to press F1 or F2?

Yes, it does respond with a beep and the screen went black afterwards on each try.

If not do you have another keyboard to try?

I tried with two keyboards, one Microsoft Keyboard and one Gigabyte Aivia, both with the same result.

Yes, in both cases (RAM) - but it doesn't continue. (Post #6 in this thread)

The RAM was here before I bought the board and I relied on the list  - I did not see too much difference in the size of the single modules, that's all.

This is just my opinion. ...

Sure, no one can guarantee that it will work for me afterwards and that is what I requested - but I also expect some degree of honesty. That is why I asked a second time.
As a reasonable person each of us must know what he/she does, but I don't want to spend money and end up in the same situation again.
So please continue to advise.

Are your keyboards wireless or USB? If USB try a motherboard USB port. Once you get to the F1/F2 screen wait 5 minutes and then see if the keys respond. If using wireless also try a USB port for the keyboard transmitter on the motherboard and also wait 5 minutes.

Both keyboards are USB and were directly attached to the board (back of the PC). The lights are also turning on and they stay on (e.g. NUM Lock). I don't know with which one of the keyboards, but with one I waited for a very long time during the period I was answering here.

Are they plugged into the USB 2.0 Ports?
The top two ports under the Bluetooth.

Yes. They were both attached below/left from the bluetooth-device - was that a mistake?
(They were not attached at the same time.)

Try the USB 2.0 ports. You can identify these with your quick start poster sheet that came with your motherboard.

Re: POST CODE b0 - Help needed 2013/10/07 08:24:14 (permalink)
There are 6 USB 2.0 ports and 4 USB 3.0 ports.  The 2.0's are black in color, 3.0's are blue.

I hear you about not wanting to spend money on anything to later find out you have the same issue.  But if you end up at the point where nothing else solves your issue, and now you might have to spend some money, I would start with the ram.

As far as you relying on the ram compatibility list, what you bought may be similar to what's on the list, but ram kits are tested in sets.  Ram mfgr's guarantee a paticular "set" will run at rated speed with rated voltage and timings.  When you start combining kits to run together, that goes out the window.  It becomes a crap shoot.  Sometimes they work together, sometimes not.  Hit or miss.

I hope you're able to solve this without spending any more money...
