Could version 83 of the E762 bios be bugged with PCIe slot speeds? Grasping at straws at this point.

I'm curious where you able to sort this out and, if yes, what was the culprit?

Impossible to speculate. But one thing that remains constant through all of this is your adapter card. Can you try different one? Also, have you tried different drive? I mean, were all these tries with 970+? If yes can you try 960?

why do the samsung 960/970+ work over others?

I didn't say others don't work. Poster was saying he has only 960 and 970+ to test with so I was suggesting to him to try 960 if he didn't already.

i had seen others mention those models in other threads with x58 so i thought they were special for some reason.

That might be because Samsung drives are in general very good and thus popular. Some might argue that some other models from different brands might be as good, if not better, but my experience with Samsung drives has been smoother, which might be due to fact that Samsung has its own NVMe driver while others depend on Microsoft's one.

I have no experience with other brands, Samsung is what I have on hand.

Also my old Xeon is an ES. Maybe that is bugging the PCIe slot speeds.

Yep, I tried an ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 card in it. Same issue.

My Xeon CPU shows as "Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU             000  @ 3.20GHz   3.19 GHz". Don't know if that is causing any issue as it's always worked otherwise. I do have an X5690 sitting around, but until I do the v1.0 mobo mod on the two locations it won't boot with it in yet.

Then I too am now inclined to say it might be your mb/CPU. I guess you might get better idea once harley262 tries his.

Wait! Did you do the Westmere Mod to your board to accept the X5690? or is this E760 already Westmere ready?

* Westmere processors are only supported natively on the X58 SLI3, FTW3, and Classified3 Models.
A product modification may be needed for older models.

I think it may depend on which Revision your board has well.

Here's a link to the discussion.

Disregard if you have the newer board.

good eye! the board is a rev 1, but i havnt done the mod yet as i am out of flux and waiting for a delivery. i have a 975 in there right now at stock clock but it is so terribly slow, it feels like a 10 year old computer. i have another x58 board with a 5675 @4.2 and it light years faster (it seems).

Now thinking my PCIe 1.0 4x issue is Windows installing the wrong hardware driver. It looks like it's using a generic Microsoft disk driver version 10.0.22000.1 dated 6/21/2006. That can't be right. I also won't let me properly install the Samsung NVME driver saying it's not valid for the drive.

my nvme controller driver that win 10 installed is 10.0.19041.1266

Something just crossed my mind: Have you tried again installing Samsung's driver when disk was in Asus card?

I installed one on my X58 board today as I had it out of the rack, and thought I would give it a test.
Just to note, upon first boot it had an error in Device Manager, "Could Not Start I/O Adapter Error" or something along those lines.
So I looked for the NVMe driver in device manager and it did install the standard microsoft NVMe driver automatically.
I restarted the PC and it recognized it right off. So a second boot was necessary.
Here are the speeds.

EVGA X58 SLI E758 (Installed in bottom slot)
WD SN750 w/ EK Heatsink
Windows 10

Cool! I didn't need second boot, it recognized it, installed driver and started working right off the bat, but that doesn't matter, what matters is that it works for you, those speeds are in the line with ones I was getting.

I went ahead and tested it with Samsung 980, worked on first boot, 2 NVMe drives installed and working on default driver.

Nice, these old boards were a great choice when purchased new. I still use mine for all kinds of stuff.
Now with these drive speeds, it's killing the 860 Evo SATA2 speeds.

That's for another PC to access the slot behind the GPU for a Firewire card.

Wondering if I don't have some hardware damage to mine. A few years ago a NIC went out on it. With it having 2 I just disabled the one in bios and went on using the computer thinking nothing of it. Wonder if lightning might of damaged it more than I thought. At this point I might pivot a bit as dual 1366 seems like an entertaining rabbit hole to mess with. I already have the X5690s and the 48GB of ram from my E762. SR-2's are still hovering around $500, but ASUS has the Z8PE line and Intel has the S5520HC. Both of which go for around $100 now. I really can't justify dropping anymore than $100 to get a Socket 1366 rig up and running like I want it. Replacement E762 still go for too much for me to replace it.

Regardless of what the culprit might be I agree with you you would be much better off investing your effort into something else.

P.S. You just made me look up X58 prices! Dear God, am I right they are really that high? It seems I should find time to put mine up for sale.

I would try to follow the traces on the adapter and make sure it's actually X4 lanes and not X1,
I forgot what your m.2 adapter was, but I guess you know it's not in the x1 slot.
Unless you have tried different slots, and different PC, I'm guessing it might be the m.2 adapter card.

I think you failed to notice he did test with different adapter that is guaranteed more than x1 and he did try different slots.

Yep I did, I went back read it again.

Okay so have you tested the NVMe in a known working x4 3.0? just to be sure the NVMe is working correctly?

In the X99 Bios there is a setting for payload on the PCIe slots, 128 - 4096 I believe. not sure it will help but maybe worth looking into.

Also I just remembered there are dip switches just below the SLI logo to switch PCIe slots ON/OFF etc..
EDIT: Sorry wrong board, the X58 had jumpers to switch the PCIe slots.

ive become disenchanted with this 760 classified mb for a couple of issues with the bios, plus the i had forgotten that these 780ti are such flamethrowers and i merely wanted this board to go with those gpus for appearance only.
anyways, i moved the adapter and ssd to a p6x58d premium to see how it performs. asus is the top image, similar performance in the first two and last tests, but the third is way different. any ideas why?
