I think 10 years is overkill, 5 is in the right ballpark... but if it becomes a hand-me-down then 10 is ok

+1

I bought my Titan X to 'hopefully' last me 5 years in this rig.
With the games coming out, I think it may last another year and thats it.

If you play @4k, considering the pace the games have become more demanding, I doubt any card would last you more than 2 years. If not, it would be cool to have 5yrs warranty

I guess from a tech standpoint, 5 seems reasonable with the rate of advancement in software .. although I do remember the lifetime warranties which was one of the things that brought me to EVGA.. world is different now so I don’t blame them for taking that back.

I can’t imagine the 10 year warranty being transferable to a new owner so the hand me down situation might not apply.. correct me if I’m wrong.

With all that said it is cool to see older high end NVidia gear holding up and being useful even a few years out. I just picked up a used EVGA GTX 660 from a buddy that can still hang👍

I have 3 Titan Blacks with 10 years warranty, this length of the warranty applies only to the org. owner.

This cards are now what???..3 years old and they are running great. I Need cards with full FP64 and I hope my Titans will last me for more than 10 years I love them, I still have the original Titan that is crunching hard without a single glitch.

I have older Tesla that I paid almost 6K few years ago and in some calculations my Blacks can perform better then this designated workstation cards

Just for the heck of it, I have a question. I'm wondering if my Black(s) will go bad (knock at the wood) and as we all know starting from Titan X to Xp those cards can handle less then half the tflops in DP calculations compare to my Blacks, what on earth I would get in replacement, this would be interesting.

I've personally decided my next big GPU purchase I will likely purchase at least a 5 year warranty, though 10 years wouldn't be bad either if you planned on keeping the GPU around and keeping it in a workstation or something where the performance of the GPU isn't as critical. With how little graphics have improved in the last 10 years(just my opinion) GPU's might hold their weight a little while longer then usual where a 10 year warranty may not be a bad thing. But then again technology always has those big break troughs & a lot can happen in 10 years.

I just don’t think insurance for purchase so small are worth it. Obviously it makes sense for cars, houses, etc. but most things go bad within a short period if they are going to. Get a 1 year manufacturing warranty, a good surge protector, and cooling system and save yourself some money.

Re: Opinions: Is the 10 year warranty worth it? 2018/02/20 20:26:03 (permalink)
I disagree.
Most video cards that can actuall hang for gaming for 5 years are usually 1k or more nowadays, and protecting that investment with 40 to 50 dollars for 5 years is a great deal.
Especially when we are seeing video cards get smaller, and tech turns to much less quality than its preddecessors (look at intel when the went from the 1st I7's to now, and how fragile they are now).
Video cards seem to have hit that quality threshold going so low a die starting from the 900 series now to the 1000 series.
But  expecting a video card to last more than 5 years is pretty unreasonable, unless you wait another year to get one, that takes advantage of the new engines just out.
Another new engine will probably be out in another 5 years, along with new consoles.
So, 5 years seems to be the bestbet for a super high end card lasting.
Unless you go sli. Sli may buy you another year or 2, as long as you keep the same monitor and dont buy a bigger one.
My opinion.

I've had like 7 or 8 cards in the last 10 years.
I'm itching to get next gen already. My Titan X can do 4K but not at uber quality.

5 years is a much better choice and that's assuming you buy a top of the line card like a 1080ti or a Titan, anything longer than 5 years is a waste.

To put it in perspective, 10 years ago I was using a 9800 GTX... Do you think I (anyone) has seen that card for years?  It's probably sitting in a dump somewhere or was melted down years ago.

5 years is ample (heck 3 years is plenty for most cases).  10 years is a crazy amount of time to warranty a card.

Really I guess the question to ask is what was your last video card? Was it over 5 years ago? I am not against the 10 year option but think a lot of people don't understand that it's to keep you playing games at the same level as the card you bought not give you a top of the line graphics card.

a run of the mill card like a 1070 will just last 3 years & I would not consider the extra warranty, but a grouse card like the 1080 ti Kingpin, it should last more than 3 years (you could always OC the crap out of it & put a water block on it), and I would consider extra warranty on that card, but we have no choice downunder, it is 3 years & that's all (why?).  I wish I knew before I bought that card, it is a lovely card thou

This explains the regions https://www.evga.com/support/warranty/extended.asp sorry to say downunder does not qualify. Don't believe there is any other way of getting it.

I always purchase the 5 yr extended, never considered 10 yr due not using the cards that long.

thanks for that furgusonll
I bought the Kingpin as it is built to a higher standard from the high standard that EVGA adopt & as such, should last until I pass it on or I pass on
I love this card      I came from the red side & the last card I got from the green side was a 7600GS
I got 2012 out of the box, all I did was adjust the fan profile

I also love the software      as opposed to the catalyst I have gotten used to
I will learn how to use the software one day to OC this card, but ATM, it is running a beaut on my 27" 144Mhz free-sync monitor

You bought GTX1080Ti K|NGP|N as NVIDIA after long, long time...
That's probably great experience. I figure out that NVIDIA dominate 2011/2012 and than I change side.
I'm old ATI/AMD users... Only from AMD I had only ASUS HD6970. I was dissapointed with temps and I back to last ATI GPU.
ATI5870 2GB Eyefinity. That was last and best reference ATI model. Than I change NVIDIA side, I had short time GTX580 when I decide that NVIDIA is better. Later I again had GTX580 only EVGA stock model and still is with me as nicest reference NVIDIA before Boost is invented.

GTX1080Ti K|NGP|N is great and immediately I recognize model heatsink is red, copper.
And they are recognizable when you comapre with other models, look great. Special on X299 Dark motherboard.
They are pair-combo, same style, same line.

I'm still not sure how much will cost new NVIDIA, and how GTX1080Ti K|NGP|N Hydro Copper deal with 4K but maybe if price drop I choose her as successor of GTX780Ti K|NGP|N. That would be nice relationship for next 3 years.
My economic situation not allow me to change more often and for me unique models are maybe more important than for other people.
I connect with them better than with reference and normal custom models.
If price of GTX1080TI K|NGP|N HydroCopper drop to 800 euro later, why not.
I would keep her more than any other GTX1080Ti and If I need to choose old gen than at least to be some cool timeless model.

Cooee Vlada011
I just played Metro Last Light for a few hours now with "normal" tessellation & 3x SSAA and everything else cranked up     and I am happy
I still have a 6970, one from HIS, an IceQ X turbo X, in a spare computer; I got it when 4850CF was no good for Crysis 2, I got the bug then       had to have grouse GFX cards.  got a 7970 after that & OCed it, then I got an exact 7970 & cross-fired it; it did well for yonks.
sold it late last year to put it towards a Vega 64 LC, as 3GB of GPU ram was not enough in some games.   I was so looking forward to the Vega 64; man that was a disappointment of a card.  it was OK with my free-sync monitor, but I wanted it to be future proof for a few years as I won't have money to spend on my comp for a while to come, other things will take centre stage.
I read somewhere a bloke sold his Vega 64 for more money that he bought a Titan for.  I thought if I sell my Vega 64 LC for around the same money as the 1080 ti Kingpin, then I would be happy.  the Kingpin was on special too, so I could not say no; I still have not sold the Vega 64 LC yet
yes, this Kingpin will last me a while before I have to water it, but I wonder how games will develop over the next few years.  Crysis 2 & Metro Last Light really tested gaming comps, but they are not the newest games.
I wonder if newer games will be as taxing or it will plateau for awhile?   doing up a computer to run the latest games at max every year is getting a bit on the nose, everyone would just switch to consoles (yuk).  I will always have my PC to game on, I just hope it lasts a few years so I can pay off what I already have
I would just use the Kingpin on a 2K monitor so the frame rates are higher & it will be better future proof; unless you go 1080 ti SLI.  I prefer single card now with high frame rate than pushing the card too hard to do 4K at lower frame rates for a short period of time.  using 2K monitor will give you grouse frame rates for a few years to come

have a good 1      cheers

If you get warranty for 10 years, and the card dies in the latter half of the warranty, your most likely not getting that same card back if you rma it. For example, I had a gtx 570 that went bad and got back a gtx 960 from rma. It was a big improvement to my system. For this reason I have purchased the 10 year warranty on the last couple I have bought. But I know this wont work for those that like to play @ 4k and maxed graphics every year. It depends on what you want out of a graphics card.

For what it's worth, I am just now replacing my GTX 680 with a brand new EVGA GTX 1080. The GTX 680 is just over 6 years old now. If I had purchased the extended 5 year warranty, I would have been relying on this card out of warranty for over a year and would have been SOL had it failed on me.

Then there is another scenario, you buy a flagship card like I did (GTX 680) and upgrade a few years later. Instead of the flagship collecting dust you throw it in a secondary machine. What if I used the GTX 680 for 4 years, upgraded, and used the new card for 2 years but still relied on the GTX 680 for the basement media center? The 10 year warranty would be the only way to cover the card.

If you have used a GPU for more than 5 years in the past like I did, or you repurpose your older cards after upgrading instead of selling them, the 10 year coverage becomes more than worth it. I don't think many people will be using an 8-9 year old GPU as their primary card, but I'd think many people would have their older cards in secondary machines.

My last card was a GTX 970 which failed after 5 1/2 years (5 years of warranty). At this point the card still had more than enough power so I would have kept using it for some more years.

The cost for a 10 year warranty extension is about ~10% more.

In about 10 years this card will be pretty slow, yeah. (I fell back on a 10 year old card, playing on a 560 Ti right now.) Cards are much more likely to fail after around 5 years than in the beginning, so spending a few bucks extra for not having to worry during the 6th, 7th or 8th year is totally worth it - much cheaper than being forced to buy a new one at that point.
So I can use the 7th or 8th year to start look around what card I want to buy next - and if new hardware isn't available then (like right now) I can wait another year without having to worry.

The same amount of time passed between between post #25/#26. I found this thread by using Google. I discussed it elsewhere and wanted to give my opinion here, yes. That's the reason for having a forum. You might call it necrobumping because it's an old thread but the information here is not outdated so why not discuss it here? Let's stay on topic btw.

More or less the lifetime of a CPU or GPU is being limited by the instructions/API that it supports accelerates and the use case of the owner. I've a Dell D620. It's 15 years old. I stuck Windows 10 32bit and a 500 GB SDD in it just to use as a media server for practice tracks with a top quality USB DAC. I open the lid and it's on in a second.  My Nephew is using VR with my X58 system with a 980x and GTX 980 Ti in it. Still going strong. There's a lot of different use cases.

My opinion: no, never.

1) I tend to void my warranties.
2) In 8 years, an "equal or greater performance" card available will be the lowest card in stock.  So, what, I am going to pay $60 for an extended 10-year warranty today in order to get a $100 card in 8 years?  How does that make financial sense?  Sure, I guess you wind up on top, but in 8 years you are going to be so sick of your performance that you will be begging for something much better than the worst card available.  You will probably gladly pay money for something better.
